Internet Provider For Ukraine's Military Hit In 'Most Severe' Cyberattack Since Invasion

Ukraine says that one of its main internet service providers used by the country's military was hit with a massive cyberattack on Monday as part of stepped up Russian efforts to unleash more in its tech arsenal to degrade Ukraine's defense capabilities.

Importantly the fresh attack was called among the worst Ukraine has suffered since the war's start. The Wall Street Journal detailed that "The attack on Ukrtelecom PJSC was described by some experts as among the most harmful cyberattacks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. About 3:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Ukrainian officials said that they had repelled the attack, and that the company could restore services, according to a statement from Ukraine’s State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection, which is responsible for cybersecurity in the country."

A US-based internet monitor observed that Ukrtelecom's services began gradually dropping to customers over a period of hours, before going completely dark by five hours into the attack, impacting both the military and customers across the country.

Ultimately the military's access was less impacted given the company took steps to restrict private side services. NetBlocks said it impacted the whole country, confirming that connectivity collapse to 13% of pre-war levels, in what would make it among the most severe since the invasion began.

Russia has consistently denied that it's behind a series of cyberattacks over the past months, which happened even before the Feb.24 invasion.

The State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection (SSSCIP) of Ukraine blamed "the enemy" for the Monday attack in a follow-up statement.

SSSCIP had said in a statement, "Today, the enemy launched a powerful cyberattack against Ukrtelecom ’s IT-infrastructure… In order to preserve its network infrastructure and to continue providing services to Ukraine’s Armed Forces and other military formations as well as to the customers, Ukrtelecom has temporarily limited providing its services to the majority of private users and business-clients."

Denmark Puts Coronavirus ‘Anti-Government Extremism’ on Terrorism List

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -Denmark’s domestic security on Tuesday designated pandemic-linked “antigovernmental extremism” as a menace for the first time ever.

The agency, known by its Danish acronym PET, said in its annual assessment that although this type of extremism is not “a significant driving force for the terrorist threat” in the country, it does make the situation “more complex.”

PET said the menace which expresses the need to use violence against elected representatives, had appeared in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michael Hamann, head of PET’s Center for Terror Analysis that analyzes the threat of terrorism against Denmark and Danish interests abroad, said the vast majority of instances where authorities were heavily criticized for their handling of the pandemic unfolded peacefully.

Hamann cited examples where such criticism has been expressed by “threats and intimidation” in Denmark, while there have been examples abroad “of planning or carrying out actual violent acts.”

But he said in a statement that the threat from antigovernment extremism is “limited in level.”

The general terrorism threat Denmark is “serious”, defined as having the “capacity, intention and planning,” PET said. Militant Islamism still constitutes the most significant terrorist threat against the Scandinavian country and Danish interests abroad.

However, the risk that the Danish population would be affected by terrorism remains “very low.”

Canadian Politician Arrested and Charged Over Freedom Convoy Involvement

Ontario member of the provincial parliament Randy Hillier surrendered to Ottawa police Monday and is facing nine criminal charges relating to his involvement in the Freedom Convoy protests last month.

Hillier, who serves as an independent member of the provincial parliament (MPP) in Ontario, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, obstructing someone aiding a peace officer as well as several counts of counselling an uncommitted indictable offence and counts of mischief.

According to Hillier, he was contacted by Ottawa police on Sunday and told to surrender himself on Monday, which he proceeded to do on Monday morning, broadcaster CBC reports.

Hillier told media that he had not assaulted any officers saying, “So unless handshakes or warm embraces are now considered assault, I have no idea.”

Journalist Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun newspaper published a statement from Hillier on Twitter in which Hillier commented on the ongoing situation saying, “I look forward to the opportunity to defend myself against these charges.”

“Questioning and challenging public policy is the role and responsibility of any elected representative,” he said and added, “non-violent civil disobedience has been a globally accepted means of expressing grievance against governments, until 2022 in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Canada.”

Hillier was criticised during the Freedom Convoy protests by some on social media after he was accused of calling for supporters of the Freedom Convoy to tie up emergency services phone lines in Ottawa, with some demanding his arrest at the time.

Ottawa lawyer James Bowie was among those calling for Hillier’s arrest last month, noting he had been involved with Freedom Convoy organisers like Tamara Lich, who was arrested after Prime Minister Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history to end the three-week-long protests against Wuhan coronavirus restrictions and mandates.

FBI Cyber Chief Says He Doesn’t Know Where Hunter Biden’s Laptop From Hell Is

FBI Assistant Director, cyber division, Bryan Vorndran on Tuesday said he doesn’t know where Hunter Biden’s laptop is because it’s not in his purview.

Hunter Biden’s laptop was previously abandoned at a computer repair shop in Delaware.

The Delaware repair shop owner, John Paul Mac Isaac, contacted lawmakers about Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop and the FBI was in possession of the computer by December 2019.

The FBI withheld the laptop from President Trump’s legal team during the first impeachment.

Emails on Hunter Biden’s laptop revealed he was involved in an international money laundering operation and acted as a bagman for Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden took money from China, Russia, Ukraine and other countries.

GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz on Tuesday asked FBI cyber chief Bryan Vorndran if he knows where Hunter Biden’s laptop is stored.

“Sir, I don’t know that answer,” he said.

White House Left Out Details Of “Grisly Child Porn Case” From Nominee Materials Given To GOP

A case in which Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson gave a light sentence to a child porn offender was left off materials given to Republicans.

Questions are now being raised that this was omitted intentionally.

Fox News reported:

Republicans say the White House did not include in materials given to the Judiciary Committee a grisly child porn case in which Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson departed significantly below probation office recommendation – and are raising questions of whether the White House “intentionally left it out,” which the White House disputes.

Jackson, President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, sentenced the case less than a year ago as she was about to be elevated to the D.C. Circuit Court. Titled U.S. v. Cane, it involved “over 6,500 files depicting children appearing to be of elementary, middle and high school ages, engaged in sexual acts or posing sexually.” The probation office recommended a sentence of 84 months in the case but Jackson sentenced the man to 60 months in prison, which was the mandatory minimum.

“Not only does this case, which Judge Jackson left off her list of child abuse cases, undercut her argument that she followed the probation office’s recommended sentences, but it also underscores the perils of moving too quickly in the vetting process,” a Republican Judiciary Committee aide told Fox News.

GOP Senator Josh Hawley has exposed that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has a history of being lenient on child porn offenders.

Russia Says It Will ‘Drastically’ Reduce Military Activity Near Kyiv and Chernihiv as Talks Progress

Ukraine put forward a potential peace deal that =Russia will respond to after it is reviewed by Putin

Russia’s military announced Tuesday that it would “drastically” reduce operations near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv as talks between the warring sides in Istanbul made progress towards a peace deal.

Speaking to reporters following the talks, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said that “a decision was made to drastically … reduce the military activity on the approaches to Kyiv and Chernihiv.” He said Russia expects “relevant key decisions will be taken in Kyiv and the conditions for further normal work will be created.”

Vladimir Medinsky, Russia’s head negotiator, described the Istanbul talks as “constructive” and said the Ukrainians delivered an outline for a peace proposal that will be relayed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Under the potential deal, Ukraine would vow not to join NATO or any other military alliance and vow not to host foreign military bases or develop nuclear weapons.

In exchange, Ukraine wants Russia not to block its EU bid and wants security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5, the mutual defense clause of the military alliance that outlines “an attack on one is an attack on all.” Ukraine wants guarantees from Russia, the US, the UK, China, Turkey, France, Canada, Italy, Poland, and Israel.

It’s not clear if all countries would agree to what is essentially a mutual defense treaty with Ukraine. David Arakhamia, the head of Ukraine’s negotiating team, said some of the countries have already given their preliminary agreement to be a guarantor.

Russia wants Ukraine to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, but the Ukrainians offered to resolve the issue over 15-year talks. In the meantime, Ukraine said it would agree not to use force to resolve the status of Crimea. Russia also wants Ukraine to recognize the independence of the two breakaway republics in the Donbas. But the Donbas issue wasn’t addressed in Ukraine’s proposal and could potentially be discussed in a future meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Medinsky said Russia would be willing to hold a Putin-Zelensky meeting at the same time as the two country’s foreign ministers meet to work out a peace deal. Russia’s previous position was that a Putin-Zelensky meeting would only be necessary after an agreement was finalized.

The next step for the talks is for Russia to deliver a response to Ukraine’s proposal. In the meantime, Ukraine’s military said it has seen Russian forces withdraw from areas near Kyiv and Chernihiv, but fighting continues in the east. On Friday, Russia announced that the “first stage” of the invasion was over and that it was now focusing on “liberating” the Donbas.

The US doesn’t appear to be involved in the peace talks as Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed skepticism over Russia’s offers of de-escalation. Since the invasion started on February 24, the Biden administration has not tried high-level diplomacy with Russia to end the fighting. Instead, the US has been working to flood Ukraine with weapons and destroy Russia’s economy through sanctions.

Trump calls on Putin to release info on Hunter Biden’s dealings with oligarchs

“I think we should know that answer,” America’s 45th president says.

Former President Donald Trump is calling on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to release any information he possesses on Hunter Biden’s dealings with oligarchs in Eastern Europe.

In an interview with the Just the News television show on Real America’s Voice airing Tuesday, the former president cited a 2020 Senate report that disclosed Russian oligarch Yelena Baturina, then the wife of Moscow's mayor, provided $3.5 million a decade ago to a company co-founded by President Joe Biden’s son and unanswered questions about why the money was given.

"She gave him $3.5 million so now I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it," Trump said in a wide-ranging interview at his Mar O Lago resort in Florida. "I think we should know that answer."

A grand jury in Delaware has been investigating Hunter Bjden's business dealings for possible tax violations, foreign lobbying issues and money laundering. Hunter Biden has acknowledge the probe but denied wrongdoing.

Trump said he also would like to know more about Hunter Biden's relationship with Ukrainian oligarch Nikolai Zlochevsky, the owner of the Burisma Holdings gas company that hired the Biden scion in 2014 to its board and paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

At the time, the State Department considered Burisma to be a corrupt company that made bribes to Ukrainian officials and viewed Hunter Biden’s relationship as having created the appearance of a conflict of interest because his father, then Vice President Joe Biden, oversaw U.S.-Ukraine policy.

A memo obtained by Just the News in January of this year also revealed that senior State officials were warned that Hunter Biden’s dealing in the country had undercut U.S. anticorruption policies.

"Now, you won't get the answer from Ukraine," Trump lamented, referring to his 2020 impeachment over seeking Ukraine's help investigating the Biden's business dealing.

Trump said he tried to raise the issue of Hunter Biden’s dealings with oligarchs during the 2020 election but was shut down by then-Fox News anchor Chris Wallace.

"How is it that the mayor of Moscow, his wife gave the Biden family three and a half million dollars? I think Putin now would be willing to probably give that answer," Trump said. "I'm sure he knows."

While encouraging Putin to reveal any information he has on the Biden family business dealings, Trump also made clear he treated Putin more severely than Democrats by blocking his NordSteam 2 natural gas pipeline to Europe, imposing sanctions on Moscow, upgrading the U.S. nuclear arsenal and bulking up NATO’s sagging finances.

Dr. Oz Promoted Controversial Medicine in Book Written With CCP-Backed Academic

Dr. Mehmet Oz coauthored a book touting the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine with the head of a Beijing university controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.

Written by Oz and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine president Anlong Xu, Yin Yang You hit shelves on Oct. 11, weeks before Oz launched his Senate campaign in Pennsylvania. The book promotes traditional Chinese medicine, an alternative medical practice that has been met with skepticism in the West.

Oz's collaboration with Xu shows how the celebrity doctor's drive to make money in China may have helped Beijing's propaganda efforts. Oz, who has called on President Joe Biden to be "tougher" on Beijing, has made millions of dollars in the Chinese market from his television show and through a sponsorship deal with Usana Health, a wellness company with a heavy presence in China. Usana was a longtime sponsor of Oz's television show and published Yin Yang You.

The Chinese Communist Party has in recent years embraced traditional Chinese medicine as part of its soft-power initiatives. Chinese president Xi Jinping last year urged the development and export of traditional Chinese medicine, which he suggested could help fight COVID-19. Oz praised Xi at a book event in September for embracing traditional Chinese medicine, saying the Chinese Communist Party leader has "opened this portal" for Usana to sell health products in the Chinese market.

Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is a central hub in the Chinese Communist Party's efforts to promote traditional Chinese medicine across the globe. Xu Anlong, Oz's coauthor, appeared alongside Xi Jinping at an event in 2015 to launch an Australian satellite campus of Beijing University. The school said the partnership would help China's "soft-power" goals. Beijing University has since established the U.S. Center for Chinese Medicine outside Washington, D.C.

The Chinese Communist Party is deeply embedded at the Beijing school, whose eight-person leadership board includes three party secretaries. Xu has led Chinese Communist Party meetings at the university, according to its website.

The United Front Work Department also has a presence at the school. The department conducts many of the Chinese Communist Party's foreign influence operations. The school works closely with Confucius Institutes, which the Chinese government has used to keep tabs on Chinese students in the United States and other Western countries.

Usana's publication of the Oz book is part of a broader partnership with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The company released a two-minute infomercial in November that features Oz discussing herbal remedies with a professor from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Usana and Beijing University struck a deal in May 2021 to study traditional Chinese medicine and its various ingredients. Under the agreement, Usana has the right to commercialize any products developed through the partnership. Beijing University receives scholarships for traditional Chinese medicine students and support for the U.S. Center for Chinese Medicine.

Oz's Republican Senate primary campaign has floundered in recent weeks, with a Washington Free Beacon poll finding that challenger David McCormick has taken a commanding lead. Oz, who has made the U.S. relationship with China a central issue of his campaign, has faced extensive criticism for his foreign ties and for criticizing former president Donald Trump's strong trade policies against China. Oz pledged this month to renounce his Turkish citizenship, reversing a claim he made days earlier that he would maintain dual citizenship even if it meant forgoing classified Senate briefings.

When reached for comment, Oz communications director Brittany Yanick told the Free Beacon that the candidate "spent the last 30 years in medicine helping individuals combat illnesses and empowering people to make decisions that benefit themselves, not the government."

Thousands of airstrikes carried out by Israel in past five years

Facing new threats on various fronts, both near and far, Israel's Air Force has used over 5,500 munitions

Facing multiple enemies on multiple fronts, the Israel Air Force has carried out more than a thousand airstrikes over the past five years, hitting targets near and far from Israel’s borders in order to protect the country.

With a rapidly changing region and new threats emerging from state and non-state actors, the Air Force has been required to conduct extensive operational activities to ward off various threats.

Under the command of outgoing IAF Commander Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin, the IAF over the past five years has struck 1,200 targets with over 5,500 munitions during 408 missions.

In 2021 alone, dozens of aerial operations were carried out, with 586 munitions used against 174 targets. In addition, 239 anti-aircraft missiles were also fired toward Israeli jets during operations as part of Israel’s war-between-wars campaign.

Those campaigns were meant to prevent Iran from entrenching on Israel’s northern borders and smuggling advanced weaponry to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Syrian Arab Army is equipped with a range of older Russian-made surface-to-air missile systems such as the SA-2, SA-3, SA-5, SA-6,-SA-8, SA-11, SA-17, SA-19, SA-22, and Pantsir 1 air defense systems

Both Russia and Iran have also deployed advanced air defense systems to the country, including the S-300 and S-400, making Syria the country with the most air defenses in the world.

While the S-300 and S-400s have not been used, and only one S-300 battery is in the hands of the SAA while the others remain under Russian command, the IAF believes that if Russia deploy additional advanced batteries, they should be destroyed before they can be used against Israeli jets.

Though the response time by Syrian SAMs to Israeli operations has become quicker, with the firing of over a thousand missiles toward Israeli jets in the past seven years, they have been unable to stop them from carrying out their missions.

More than 70 Chicago police officers guard Democrat Mayor Lightfoot as part of unit created in 2020

Unit 544 was established at the height of the nationwide protest and riot movement following George Floyd death

The Chicago Police Department has for the past two years provided Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot – who in 2020 proposed cutting the agency's budget by $80 million amid the "defund" movement – with a 71-member detail to protect her home and oversee her personal bodyguard detail.

The detail, known as Unit 544, started with a handful of officers and has now grown into a group that includes 65 officers, five sergeants, and a lieutenant, according to a Chicago Sun Times story Monday.

In addition to the special unit, Lightfoot has an additional personal bodyguard detail, made up of roughly 20 officers.

In July of 2020, the height of the nationwide social justice protests, the city's police department sent a memo to officers inviting them to apply to the newly created unit:

"The unit's mission will be to provide physical security for City Hall, the mayor's residence and the mayor's detail command post," the memo reads. "Through the coordination of intelligence and resources, officers will respond to all threats related to the mayor's physical properties to ensure its protection."

At the time the unit was established, residents who live in the police district that includes the mayor's house complained that security there was being stretched too thin because patrol vehicles were being redirected to Lightfoot's residence where many protestors had gathered.

In an interview with the Sun Times, Lightfoot said the establishment of Unit 544 was unrelated to criticism from her neighbors.

"We thought, and this is way before the protests or anything else, it just didn’t make sense," she said it trying to why creating such a unit made sense. "Because, you know, if there was some kind of emergency at City Hall, for example, the right hand wouldn’t necessarily know what the left hand was doing because they all reported to different chains of command."

Latvia and Lithuania detain 108 over multi-million euro call centre scam

With the support of Europol and Eurojust, the Latvian State Police (Valsts policija) and the Lithuanian Police (Lietuvos Policija) have detained over 100 people in Riga and Vilnius on suspicion of being involved in an international call centre scam.

On 24 and 25 March hundreds of officers, including special intervention teams, raided a total of three call centres belonging to the same organised crime group. Its members are accused of defrauding victims across the world.

Under their orders, an army of up to 200 fake ‘traders’, speaking English, Russian, Polish and Hindi, would call unsuspecting victims to persuade them to part with their savings, promising lucrative investment opportunities. However, the investments in bitcoin, commodities and foreign currencies were all fake.

According to preliminary calculations, the suspects arrested are believed to have turned an illegal profit of over EUR 3 million per month with this scam.

The coordinated strike against them resulted in:

80 people detained in Latvia and 28 detained in Lithuania;

Seizure of cash, bank accounts and luxury vehicles;

EUR 95 000 in cryptocurrencies seized.

Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Centre supported the investigation from the onset by bringing together the national investigators from Latvia and Lithuania to establish a joint strategy and to organise the intensive exchange of evidence needed to prepare for final phase of the investigation. Europol experts from both its European Financial and Economic Crime Centre and European Cybercrime Centre were deployed to Latvia and Lithuania to assist the national authorities with the action days.

Eurojust supported by setting up a joint investigation team (JIT) into the case within one week and organising a rapid coordination meeting. Further assistance was given with the execution of a European Investigation Order during the action day.

Why an ISIS Terrorist in Israel Opened Fire Wearing a ‘Punisher’ Symbol

The skull symbolizing Marvel's anti-hero ‘The Punisher’ has been adopted by Kurdish fighters battling ISIS, Israeli soldiers and police officers, rioters storming the U.S. Capitol and now an Islamic extremist who killed two Israelis

The logo of the comic book character The Punisher has become increasingly popular among soldiers, police officers and militants in recent years. It has appeared on the uniforms of American fighters in Iraq, Kurdish fighters battling ISIS and even on the clothing of some rioters at the storming of the U.S. capital last year.

Now the white skull with angry looking eye sockets and extended teeth has shown up in another violent incident, this time a shooting attack by ISIS sympathizers in the central Israeli city of Hadera.

The assailants, Israeli Arabs from the town of Umm al-Fahm, opened fire on Sunday evening, killing Israeli Border Police officers Yazan Falah, 19, and Shirel Abukarat, 19. According to police, one of the two men, Ibrahim Agbarieh, had previously attempted to join the Islamic State. The group has taken credit for the attack on its Telegram account. This, in turn, has prompted defense officials to look into a possible connection to the ISIS sympathizer who killed four people in the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva last week.

Video footage of the attack showed one of the shooters wearing body armor emblazoned with the Punisher logo on the back. This was not the first time this symbol has made headlines in Israel. Last year it was sported by an undercover Israeli policeman involved in handling the riots that took place in mixed Jewish-Arab cities in May 2021.

Ukraine's Military Says Russia Now Partially Withdrawn From Kiev & Chernihiv After US Expressed Doubt

Update (1510ET): Ukraine's The Kyiv Independent English language news portal is citing the country's military who say Russian forces have partially withdrawn from Kyiv and Chernihiv, after the Kremlin said coming off "constructive" negotiations in Istanbul that the military would drastically reduce operations near the two major cities.

"According to Ukraine’s military, the Russian army is regrouping in the east to concentrate its military power in the area. In the south, Russia is preparing to resume offensive operations," the Kyiv-based outlet wrote.

Meanwhile, offering further confirmation that Tuesday's meeting could be the start of the kind of positive breakthrough the world has been waiting for, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu cited that the Istanbul talks marked the "most significant progress" since the invasion last month.

Cavusoglu described "the most significant progress since negotiations began."

US leaders are still doubting Moscow's "good faith" intentions, however, suggesting that we're in reality witnessing a "redeployment" and not a withdrawal, also as Russia's military has stated it aims to focus efforts in liberating the Donbas region.

Joe Biden’s New Pentagon Secretary Nominee Is Pfizer’s Former ‘Global Project Lead’ Who Blasted Conservatives as ‘Nut Jobs’.

The LGBT activist has a long history of political activity.

President Joe Biden’s nominee to serve as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs previously served as the “Global Project Lead” at Pfizer and is one of the leading proponents of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender representation in the U.S. military, The National Pulse can reveal.

The nomination of Brenda “Sue” Fulton to the Pentagon comes amidst Pfizer’s continued efforts to secure Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its COVID-19 vaccine and boosters.

Fulton, 63, was also recently blasted by members of the United States Senate for referring to right-wingers as “anti-everyone nutjobs falling in love with a dictatorship.”

Posing a potential conflict of interest, Fulton previously worked at Pfizer Consumer Health as a Global Project Lead for half of a decade between 2012 to 2017. She described her duties as “expanding consumer access to Pfizer consumer brands in new channels, all regions,” on her LinkedIn.

From 2012 to 2016, Fulton worked as a Director and later a Franchise Lead for the pharmaceutical company’s “Prescription to Over-the-Counter (OTC) Switch” program. The FDA, which has also overseen the COVID-19 vaccine EUA process, is, therefore, responsible for administering the drug review process that Fulton previously led.

In addition to working for Pfizer, which has hired legions of politically connected lobbyists appearing to push for COVID-19 vaccine mandates, Fulton has a long history of pushing the military to “increase diversity.” Fulton’s nomination comes amidst existing fears the U.S. military is prioritizing instruction of far-left Critical Race Theory over combat readiness.

Kremlin Rules Out Using Nuclear Weapons Over Ukraine War

A top Kremlin official this week ruled out using nuclear force over the conflict in Ukraine.

“No one is thinking about using—about even the idea of using a nuclear weapon,” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told PBS on Monday evening.

Last week, Peskov suggested in an interview with CNN that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons if faced an “existential threat.” And former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said earlier this week that Russia “reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if it faces an existential threat, even if the other side has not employed nuclear weapons.”

“Any outcome of the operation, of course, is not a reason for usage of a nuclear weapon,” Peskov also told PBS on Monday. “We have a security concept that very clearly states that only when there is a threat for existence of the state in our country, we can use and we will actually use nuclear weapons to eliminate the threat.”

“Let’s keep these two things separate,” he continued, and said that the “existence of the state and special military operation in Ukraine–they have nothing to do with each other.”

Since the start of the conflict on Feb. 24, there have been fears that a nuclear weapon might be deployed as Russian forces invaded Ukraine. Days after the conflict started, Putin announced that he ordered the country’s nuclear deterrence forces to operate on high alert while the Russian leader on Feb. 24 warned of “consequences you have never seen in history” should another country intervene.

Netherlands, Belgium Extradites Dozens of Russian Diplomats Accused of Espionage

Dutch and Belgian authorities are expelling 38 Russian diplomats after accusing them of engaging in espionage activities, the foreign affairs ministry in the Netherlands and Belgium announced on Tuesday.

Wopke Hoekstra, the Netherlands’ minister of foreign affairs, said a total of 17 individuals, who were accredited as diplomats at the Russian representations in the Netherlands, were secretly working undercover in the country as intelligence officers.

The reason for the extradition is based on information collected by two Dutch intelligence services, AIVD and MIVD, which have put out warnings against Russian spies in the past, Hoekstra said in a statement.

The Russian ambassador was summoned on Tuesday and informed of the decision. The 17 diplomats have two weeks to leave the Netherlands and the decision cannot be appealed.

“These people have diplomat on their business card when they are actually doing something completely different,” Hoekstra said, Dutch news agency NOS reported. He didn’t further clarify in which kind of sector the espionage took place.

“We have made this decision for the sake of Dutch security,” he added. “In the greatly changed context, with the war in Ukraine and the increasing Russian assertiveness.”

Hoekstra noted that he assumes deporting these intelligence officers may have consequences, but the Dutch government is prepared for any retaliation by Moscow.

“Experience shows that Russia does not leave such measures unanswered,” he said. “We cannot speculate on that, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared for various scenarios that may occur in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Belgium also decided to expel 21 Russian diplomats suspected of espionage.

Sophie Wilmes, Belgium’s minister of foreign affairs, announced on Tuesday that 21 Russian diplomats have two weeks to leave the country, noting the move is not a sanction to Russia and is “only related to [Belgium’s] national security.”
