Frydenberg hides $30 a week tax increase for most Australians

Despite the federal budget’s focus on cost of living measures, the typical working Australian will still be $50 a week worse off. This is before a hidden tax increase that will leave low and middle-income earners, who are facing a tidal wave of extra costs, $30 worse off in the next financial year. Callum Foote reports.

Treasurer Frydenberg announced a number of cost of living measures in his budget speech.

These include a one-off $250 cost of living tax offset for more than 10 million low and middle-income earners, a boost to people receiving the low and middle-income tax offset by $420 for the 2021-22 financial year as well as halving the fuel excise for six months.

Hidden tax increase

What the Treasurer didn’t say is that the additional $420 tax offset for low and middle-income earners he mentioned will stop entirely at the end of this financial year, on June 30.

The extra cash bumps the tax offset up to $1500 per year.

This means that despite the extra cash given to them this year, those on this tax offset will be $1500, or almost $30 per week, worse off.

Additional costs Australians are set to face

The cut to the fuel excise will be 22 cents per litre, a welcome but temporary reprieve, though industry bodies have calculated that the average cost per litre has risen 38 cents since the Ukrainian invasion.

On top of the cost of fuel and vanishing tax offsets, Australians are looking down the barrel of a superannuation contribution increase which is likely to come out of their take-home pay and mortgage interest rates which are likely to be raised and will increase the cost of living for the majority of Australians.

Adding up all these costs, the typical full time working Australian, on $85k per year, will be an estimated $50 a week worse off after-tax with this budget only relieving this burden by $20.8 per week.

Combined with the very low levels of wage growth workers have experienced in recent years, with the December quarter seeing just a 0.7% increase according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, this budget fails to keep Australians afloat.

Macron says ‘non’ to ruble gas payments – media

Russia wants “unfriendly” countries to pay their gas bills in rubles

The West will not agree to Moscow’s request to pay its gas bills in rubles, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Reuters reported.

Macron told Putin it was impossible for Western clients to pay for gas in Russian currency, the news agency reported on Tuesday, citing an Elysee official.

“France is against paying in rubles,” the official said, as quoted by the media.

In its own readout of the call between the two leaders, the Kremlin confirmed that Moscow’s proposal on ruble payments had been discussed, but it did not provide details on the positions of both sides.

Putin had previously ordered Russia’s central bank and Gazprom energy giant to ready proposals to have gas payments from “unfriendly” countries made in rubles.

That plan was rejected by the EU and the G7 earlier on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Russia would not supply natural gas to the European market for free, as euros and dollars would not be accepted from March 31.

The Russian list of “unfriendly states,” which initially included just two countries – the US and the Czech Republic – was significantly expanded in March in the wake of the unprecedented economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West. Now it includes all the EU members, Ukraine, the UK, Canada, Japan, and others – the nations which condemned Russia’s offensive on Ukraine.

All of those countries are now subject to various retaliation measures, restrictions, and specific requirements from Russia, with switching gas payments to rubles being one measure. Another retaliatory initiative saw the Finance Ministry requesting that Russian companies wishing to work with firms from countries on the list to receive government permission first.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the citizens of “unfriendly states” would soon be hit by visa sanctions restricting entry to the country.

“Beyond the Pale For ANY Civilized Society to Consider” – Newly Introduced California Abortion Bill Could Legalize Infanticide For Several Weeks After Birth

How far down does the slippery slope go?

A newly proposed bill in the California State Legislature could expand the ghastly practice of abortion to include infanticide – the killing of a newborn child – for several weeks, months, or even years after a child is born.

According to the pro-life group ‘Right to Life League,’ CA Assembly Bill 2223 “literally decriminalizes infanticide” by eliminating civil and criminal penalties for abortion up to, and past, the point of birth. The bill specifically includes the term “perinatal death” under the definition of abortion, which would allow for fully-developed, already-born babies to be snuffed out at the will of their mothers for a still-undefined amount of time.

We all know how extreme the liberal bastion of California is already; however, AB 2223 takes things to a whole new level. This is pure evil.

From the text of AB 2223:

“[A] person shall not be subject to civil or criminal liability or penalty, or otherwise deprived of their rights, based on their actions or omissions with respect to their pregnancy or actual, potential, or alleged pregnancy outcome, including miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion, or perinatal death.”

Last month, radical California lawmakers introduced a bevy of extreme pro-abortion proposals, including AB 2223, in an effort to uphold Governor Gavin Newsom’s promise to make California a “sanctuary” state for killing unborn children.

AB 2223 includes the most radical language of all the proposals, and clearly exposes the true colors of the radical pro-abortion lobby, according to Thomas More Society Special Counsel Charles LiMandri.

The proposed bill explicitly allows for the “brutal murder” of newborn babies for weeks, months, or potentially years, LiMandri said, pointing out that the Federal Government defines ‘perinatal’ as “up to 24 months” following birth.

Anheuser-Busch heiress joins Missouri's Democratic Primary for US Senate

Busch Valentine's campaign advertisement released Tuesday targeted an audience in a red state.

Anheuser-Busch beer heiress Trudy Busch Valentine on Tuesday announced her Democratic primary campaign for U.S. Senate in Missouri.

Former state Sen. Scott Sifton endorsed Busch Valentine and dropped out of the previously low-profile Democratic primary after her announcement.

Sifton portrayed the race as Democrats versus former Gov. Eric Greitens, the frontrunner of the Republican Senate primary in Missouri who is facing accusations of abuse from his ex-wife.

"Excited to help make [Busch Valentine] Missouri’s next Senator. I know she has what it takes to beat Eric Greitens," Sifton tweeted Monday.

Greitens has denied the claims of his ex-wive Sheena Greitens. Court documents uncovered by Just the News on Tuesday show that she had lost two court cases involving the Senate candidate before filing an affidavit claiming he abused her and their children when they were still married.

He has faced calls from Republicans to step out of the race. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., tweeted last week, "If you hit a woman or a child, you belong in handcuffs, not the United States Senate. It’s time for Eric Greitens to leave this race."

Elections this fall will replace retiring Republican Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt.

Busch Valentine's campaign advertisement released Tuesday targeted an audience in a red state.

Illinois Governor Invested In Company With $2.6 Billion In State Contracts

Amid the national debate over whether members of Congress should be able to trade stock, the governor of Illinois is demonstrating how prevalent conflicts of interest are for elected officials who own securities.

In 2020, Gov. JB Pritzker’s trust bought stock in the health insurance company Centene Corp. That same year, Illinois gave $2.6 billion worth of Medicaid contracts to Centene Corp.

An investigation by the Better Government Association, a nonprofit Illinois watchdog, uncovered these interesting investments. Even though Pritzker’s investments are in a blind trust, which means that Pritzker is not privy to investment decisions, they demonstrate why blind trusts can’t prevent conflicts of interest.

Each year, Pritzker receives a copy of his current investments from his fund managers, which have the potential to influence the state contracting process.

Pritzker, a member of the family that owns the Hyatt Hotel dynasty, has a net worth of $3.6 billion, according to Forbes.

During his 2018 campaign, he pledged to purge his investment portfolio of companies that held state contracts, according to the report.

However, in 2020, his portfolio managers invested in Centene Corp., one of Illinois’ largest Medicaid contractors, according to the association’s report. While not illegal, the association’s experts say Pritzker could have instructed his trust managers not to invest in state contractors to eliminate the potential for a conflict of interest.

Pritzker and his trust managers refuse to disclose how much the investments are worth nor when the investments were made. All that has been disclosed so far is that his stake in Centene Corp is worth over $5,000, according to his Statement of Economic Interest form filed with the state.

These investments should serve as a wake-up call for investment reform for public officials. Public servants should be transparent when it comes to investing.
