Is he a patriot? Absolutely.
Has he seen up close what a kleptocratic oligarchy can do to rape a country of its resources? You bet.
Did he participate in that rape? Probably to some degree, that cash didn't come of a tree near Peterhof.
Now, the tricky part, was he beholden to the oligarchy, or they to him? Or was it a mutual accommodation? Don't know, and I don't think we'll be writing those history books just yet.
But a corrupt military is partly what got thrown into Ukrainian fields, made me wonder if the corrupt generals who didn't maintain trucks weren't using Press Gangs to maintain personnel strength.
So, is he incompetent, you ask? no, certainly doesn't seem that way. Definitely opportunistic. Corrupt? Not at all like Zhou, but the late 90's was a freeforall, so legal/not legal, open question. As always, Russia is a Matryoshka Doll, just another layer to the puzzle.
