ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One person is missing and two people were rescued with broken legs after a U.S. Navy Osprey aircraft crashed into the water near Chincoteague Wednesday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).
A USCG Station Virginia Public Affairs Officer relayed that after crashing, the aircraft became partially submerged in the water. He added that the last time the missing person was seen they were strapped in for flight, and submerged with the aircraft.
Keith Koehler, News Chief at the Wallops Island NASA facility confirmed to 8News that it was a single naval aircraft. He said that the facility’s emergency personnel was responding.
A spokesperson for the United States Coast Guard said that the crews responded to the aircraft in the water near Wildcat Marsh.
An Ocean City Maryland Water Rescue team was dispatched to the location, according to the Eastern Shore of Virginia 911 Communications Center, who said that the aircraft incident was reported at 7:31 p.m. The organization added that Wallops Flight Facility, Chincoteague Fire Department and Atlantic Fire Department responded, among other local volunteer fire departments.

Virginia Marine Police Public Information Officer Zachary Wingold said that all officers from his department were responding to the incident, but could not speak to the circumstances.
According to public flight data from the area, a U.S. military Black Hawk is responding in the area of the downed aircraft.
