Hollywood actor urges billionaires to buy fighter jets for Ukraine
Sean Penn wants private investors to fund weapon supplies to Kiev
American actor Sean Penn has called on a wealthy philanthropist to come forward with $500 million to procure at least two squadrons of fighter planes as well as missile defense systems for Ukraine, following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s repeated pleas to the US for just such a gift.
“One billionaire could end this war in Ukraine,” the staunchly pro-Kiev actor-turned-filmmaker tweeted on Thursday, delivering an itemized menu of demands.
Penn estimated that “2 squadrons of F-15s or F-16s,” which he claimed feature “better tech than Russian Migs [sic] or SU’s,” would cost only about $300 million. He also called for “another $200m in missile defense,” and further suggested that with three weeks of training plus “add-ons in arming & maintaining creative runways, etc.,” Ukraine’s pilots would be ready to kick Russia out of its skies. The actor did not elaborate on how exactly he expects such a privately funded deal to comply with US arms exports control.
Penn’s plea came just hours after the Ukrainian government reportedly renewed its own demands for further weaponry, including planes. Kiev’s wish list includes reconnaissance and attack drones, tactical radars, electronic warfare anti-drone systems, and close-air support aircraft, according to CNN, which added that the country is also asking for anti-ship missiles, optical surveillance equipment, and transport planes for weapons.
The US and several European countries have already sent hundreds of millions of dollars in military equipment to Ukraine, though they have thus far balked at arming the country with fighter planes, while President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have let up on his demand for a no-fly zone.
Penn was already in Ukraine when Russia sent its troops into the neighboring country in February. He was in the process of making a documentary with Vice Media about Kiev’s war on the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, which were recognized by Russia as independent republics after 8 years of bloody civil war.
The actor distinguished himself among Zelensky’s many American cheerleaders by demanding the Ukrainian leader be given a platform to speak at the Academy Awards, threatening to not only boycott the event but to melt down his own statues if he wasn’t included. Not inviting Zelensky would constitute the “most obscene moment in all of Hollywood history,” the actor declared melodramatically. Minister warns of ‘new Maidan’ in Europe
Pro-western political partiesmay try to overthrow the government after upcoming elections, claims Serbia’s Interior Minister
Serbia is holding presidential, parliamentary and local elections on April 3. Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin has stated that the country’s pro-western political parties will challenge the vote results and try to organize a ‘Maidan’. The 2014 violent unrest in Ukraine, known as the ‘Maidan Revolution’, ousted President Viktor Yanukovych.
“Immediately after the elections, I expect that pro-Western political parties, already financially and politically encouraged, will plan to challenge the election results, which will end in an attempt to overthrow the government,” Vulin said in an interview with Sputnik radio earlier this week. “Western political analysts have been saying that Serbia needs a new Maidan,” he added.
The minister further explained that “Maidan is a place where Ukraine lost its democracy and where thugs from the Right Sector and other Nazi organizations overthrew the legitimately elected government, and then installed and removed whoever they wanted.”
Vulin alleged that conflicts in the streets in Serbia are being prepared for immediately after the elections: not because of the elections themselves, but because President Aleksandar Vucic refused to impose sanctions on Russia amid the conflict in Ukraine and has decided to maintain Serbia’s military neutrality.
“Our independence is worth our struggle, and whether it will be challenged - yes, it will be challenged. And yes, they will try to prepare a new Maidan for us,” he said.
Throughout the interview, Vulin echoed president Vucic’s position that Serbia is the last “free nation” in Europe, as the country faces mounting pressure from western nations since Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine last month. Serbia is the only European state that has so far maintained a neutral stance on the conflict and has refused to follow the EU’s steps to punish Russia.
