‘Your time is up. Resign!’ Spain’s PM Rajoy to be ousted over corruption scandal

Five votes from the minor Basque Nationalist Party are expected to swing a tightly-balanced no-confidence motion against Spain’s center-right prime minister Mariano Rajoy, whose party has been caught up in a kickback scandal.

“Resign, Mr Rajoy. Your time is up,” Pedro Sanchez, the leader of the opposition socialists PSOE, which initiated the motion, told Spain’s parliament during a specially-scheduled debate on Thursday morning, before calling for “democratic renewal”.

As Rajoy’s People’s Party (PP) holds only 134 out of 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies, the lower chamber of the Spanish parliament, the prime minister needs the support of others to survive Friday’s vote, which requires a simple majority.

With the socialists, Catalan parties and upstart leftists Podemos on one side, and liberal Ciudadanos abstaining, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) is left as the kingmaker with its handful of representatives.

Both factions have attempted to curry favor with it. Rajoy promised an increase in investment in the north-eastern region in last week’s budget, which the PNV helped to get over the line. Sanchez reassured the Basque nationalists by promising to stick to those spending commitments for the next year.

Multiple media reports circulated in the morning, suggesting that PNV had gone over to the no-confidence side, paving the way for a new socialist-led coalition. The party itself confirmed the decision on Thursday afternoon, leaving Rajoy to fall on his sword and resign himself, or face what looks like an inevitable defeat.

Meanwhile, a bitter debate ranged in the chamber, in which an unapologetic Rajoy, who has led the country since 2011, accused his ousters of “playing Mother Teresa” with corruption accusations in order to worm their way into power.

“Sanchez wants to reach the presidency, but not by winning elections like others,” said Rajoy, noting that PSOE captured a mere 85 seats at the last election in 2016. “Everything loses importance when it comes to your ambition. This is an unhelpful attempt to take advantage of any shortcut to reach power.”

Rajoy also defended his party over the corruption indictment that last week saw dozens of former PP officials and backers jailed for money laundering and fraud, for operating a kickbacks-for-contracts scheme between 1999 and 2006. PP itself was fined €240,000 for benefitting from the racket.

The 63-year-old prime minister said that the behavior of individuals was not reflective of the party as a whole, and pointed out numerous scandals in which opposition socialists have recently been embroiled.

While the so-called Gurtel court case served as a pretext for the latest proceedings, PP has been vulnerable to toppling ever since it stitched together a weak coalition following a political deadlock two years ago.

Even if the current motion were to somehow fail, Ciudadanos say they will launch no-confidence proceedings of its own, with the aim of calling a fresh election for autumn, which could produce a more decisive result, and another swing away from the teetering centrist parties.

Hezbollah And Iranian Forces Are Preparing To Withdraw From Southern Syria – Report

Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah are preparing to withdraw from the southern Syrian governorates of al-Quneitra and Daraa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on May 30.

The SOHR added that Russia, Jordan and the US are now negotiating a deal that could prevent a military confrontation in southern Syria. The deal will force the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and radical groups to hand over their medium and heavy weapons to the SAA and to withdraw from the Syrian-Jordanian border and the contact line with Israel.

Earlier today, Israeli Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow to discuss Iranian military presence in Syria. Israeli media suggested that the two sides discussed an agreement, under which Iranian forces and Hezbollah will be forced to withdraw more than 60km away from the Golan Heights.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on May 30 that all non-Syrian forces must withdraw from the de-escalation zone in southern Syria, Which confirms that such a deal is in the making.

Officials from Jordan, Russia and the US are expected to hold a meeting in Amman soon to discuss the future of southern Syria. Local observers believe that this meeting may also push the political process in the war torn country.

Danish Parliament Passes Ban on Burqa and Niqab

A majority in Denmark’s parliament has voted in favour of a ban on certain types of face-covering clothing in public, effectively banning the Islamic burqa and niqab from August 1st

The Liberal, Conservative and Danish People’s parties all voted in favour of the bill, as did the opposition Social Democrats with the exception of MP Mette Gjerskov, thereby securing the majority.

MPs who are not ministers from Libertarian coalition partner Liberal Alliance voted against it, with the exception of one, Henrik Dahl, who voted in favour.

In total, the bill received 75 votes in favour and 30 votes against. Some MPs were absent from the vote in a so-called ‘clearing agreement’ in which all parties allow members to choose not to participate in a vote.

During the weeks-long parliamentary procedure of the bill, the government removed a provision allowing prison sentences as potential punishment for breaking the new law.

Violations of the anti-veil law will result in a 1,000 kroner (134 euros) fine for the first offence and up to 10,000 kroner for breaking the law for the fourth time or more.

The Danish People’s Party (DF) had earlier this week presented an amendment to the proposal that would have provided for prison sentences.

But with no broader support for the harsher punishment, DF voted in favour of the existing form of the bill.

Justice Minister Søren Pape Poulsen has previously stated that Danish police will not forcibly remove veils from women.

“I do not want police officers pulling items of clothing off people – burqas or otherwise. That is not going to happen,” Poulsen told Politiken last month.

“If they live nearby, they will be asked to go home,” Poulsen said at the time.

A further option would be for women to be accompanied to a police station, where they would be collected by a family member, he added.

France was in 2011 the first European country to ban Islamic veils in public by law. DF first raised the possibility of introducing such a ban in Denmark in 2009.

“Parliament has clearly stated that the burqa and niqab do not belong in Denmark. They are incompatible with Danish culture and the foundations on which Denmark is built,” DF's spokesperson on immigration issues Martin Henriksen said.

Asked whether it is Danish to deny individuals the right to choose what to wear, Henriksen said it was “always Danish to protect Denmark”.

“Of course, we have individual freedoms we must protect. But some people use them to promote an ideology that, if they are successful, will mean many more lose their freedoms,” he said.

The actual number of people who currently wear either the burqa or niqab in Denmark is not known precisely.

The most recent figures come from 2010, when a government report estimated the number to be between 150 and 200 women, with the majority of these wearing the niqab, rather than the burqa.

The niqab is a full veil with a small slit for the eyes, while the burqa is a full veil that covers the head and body with a mesh screen over the eyes.

ANON'S

I believe we need to start pushing memes which show the government and their controllers are the true enemy of the people. NOT EACH OTHER!

I posted about this to ANON'Sa month or 2 ago when they were complaining about Session's weed crackdown.

The Jeff Sessions Cannabis Crackdown Has Arrived—And It’s Awesome

‘The Haymaker’ is Leafly Deputy Editor Bruce Barcott’s weekly column on cannabis politics and culture.

This isn’t the cannabis crackdown Jeff Sessions envisioned.

With a series of crackdowns on illegal marijuana grows, the feds are shoring up the state-legal cannabis system.

Back in the early days of 2017, when the newly ensconced attorney general had the cannabis industry popping Xanax and praying twice on Sunday, Sessions loved to talk smack about legal marijuana. “Good people don’t smoke marijuana,” he once declared. “We have too much of a tolerance for drug use,” he told an audience of cops last year. “We need to say, as Nancy Reagan said, ‘Just say no.’ There’s no excuse for this, it’s not recreational. Lives are at stake, and we’re not going to worry about being fashionable.”

With Obama gone, he assured us, things would change. No more hippies smoking doobies in church. The rule of law was returning to America.

So here we are, almost 18 months later, and the Department of Justice is finally laying the wood to the marijuana growers. They’re cracking down hard. People are going to jail.

And the legal, regulated cannabis industry is benefitting.

Mueller’s Office Releases Statement of Expenditures Revealing MILLIONS of Dollars Wasted on Russia Witch Hunt

The Office of Special Counsel released a statement of expenditures on Thursday revealing over $4.5 million has been flushed down the toilet in just a 6 month period hunting Russian ghosts.

This $4.5 million is in addition to the $6.7 million the Special Counsel cost the first five months which means taxpayers are on the hook for over $11.2 million dollars for the Russian witch hunt.

Page one shows an itemized list of expenditures for the period October 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018.

Over $2.7 million for salaries and benefits for Mueller’s team of liberal hack lawyers in just a 6 month period!

Taxpayers are being punished simply because Trump won the 2016 presidential election.

Not to mention the lives devastated and destroyed by Mueller.

To this date, the FBI has not done a forensic inspection of the crime scene–the DNC servers, yet here we are forking out millions of dollars for an obvious witch hunt.

This entire witch hunt exists because AG Sessions decided to recuse himself the first day on the job.

Mueller and Rosenstein should be fired and prosecuted not only for their years of crimes and cover-ups, but for this costly, unconstitutional witch hunt.
