"In light of the increasing costs arising from the continued attempts to refloat the vessel, Evergreen declared general average," the Taiwanese shipping company said in a statement on Thursday. "The complexity of further rescue operations will require more manpower, equipment and costs to refloat the stranded vessel as soon as possible."

General average is principle of maritime law requiring cargo owners to share with the shipowner or charterer the costs associated with rescuing a vessel in a casualty event.

Evergreen, which also declared general average last year following the Ever Given grounding in the Suez Canal, said it has nominated Richards Hogg Lindley as the general average adjuster for the Ever Forward. The company is urging cargo interests and joint venture slot users to provide security bonds and necessary documents in order to take delivery of cargo after the vessel is freed and arrives at its future ports of discharge.

US Navy's Next Replenishment Oiler Named Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that a future John Lewis-class replenishment oiler (T-AO) ship will be named USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg to honor the former Supreme Court Justice and women’s rights activist.

The future USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg (T-AO 212) will be the first U.S. Navy ship to bear her name.

“As we close out women’s history month, it is my absolute honor to name the next T-AO after the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She is a historic figure who vigorously advocated for women’s rights and gender equality,” said Del Toro. “As Secretary of the Navy, it is my aim to ensure equality and eliminate gender discrimination across the Department of the Navy. She is instrumental to why we now have women of all backgrounds, experiences and talents serving within our ranks, side by side with their male Sailor and Marine counterparts.”

The name selection for the John Lewis-class replenishment oiler follows the naming convention of honoring people who have fought for civil and human rights. Born in 1933, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a pioneering advocate for women’s rights turned Supreme Court Justice. Ginsburg made history as the second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court when she was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1993. Of her 27-year tenure on the Supreme Court, she is most noted for her work toward issuing the majority opinion for United States v. Virginia, a landmark 1996 case that struck down Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy.

The future T-AO 212 is the eighth of the T-AO ships awarded to the Navy, with the first delivered in 2021. The class and lead ship T-AO 205 is named in honor of Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga).

Secretary Del Toro also named Justice Ginsburg’s daughter, Jane Ginsburg as the ship’s sponsor.

T-AO ships are fleet oilers designed to transfer fuel to the Navy’s operating carrier strike groups. The oilers have the ability to carry a load of 162,000 barrels of oil, maintain significant dry cargo capacity, aviation capability and a speed of 20 knots. General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company designed the vessels with double hulls that protect against oil spills as well as strengthened cargo and ballast tanks. The T-AO measures 742-feet in length with a full load displacement of 49,850 tons.

Oil Protesters Block 10 UK Oil Terminals

Hundreds of climate change protesters blocked oil terminals across Britain on Friday with some supporters climbing on top of oil tankers as part of their campaign to force the government to end its reliance on fossil fuels.

Extinction Rebellion, which caused days of traffic chaos in central London three years ago, and another group Just Stop Oil blocked refineries around London, Birmingham, and Southampton.

Police in Essex, just east of London, said they were dealing with three incidents and six people had been arrested.

The protests are part of planned demonstrations by Extinction Rebellion, which were due to begin on April 9, with the group saying the aim is to cause enough disruption "to create a tipping point moment".

Extinction Rebellion wants an emergency response from governments and a mass move away from polluting industries to avert the worst scenarios of devastation outlined by scientists.

"The government is making a choice to continue its addiction to fossil fuels….instead of accelerating the transition to a renewable led future," the group said in a statement.

The protests come days before the publication of the government's new energy strategy, which is expected to boost its domestic supplies in an effort to shield Britain from a surge in prices caused by Russia invading Ukraine.

Britain has committed to reaching a net zero goal for carbon emissions by 2050.

However, those plans have come under pressure in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine, with the government saying it would step up domestic production of oil and gas after announcing it would phase out imports of Russian oil by the end of 2022.

'It's creepy': Sen. Ron Johnson weighs in on transgender issues

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson on Tuesday objected to transgender women competing in women’s sports and said “it’s creepy” for them to be allowed in women’s bathrooms.

After trans woman Lia Thomas’ NCAA title win last week infuriated Republican politicians across the country and set off a national debate about trans athletes’ place in sports, the Oshkosh Republican said at a virtual town hall Tuesday, “First of all, I think most Americans agree with you in terms of the transgender issue. You shouldn’t allow biological males to compete against girls. I mean, it’s just disheartening to the girls.”

I heard Betty Reid Soskin is retiring at 100, and want to congratulate her for more than a decade of service as a National Park Ranger.

Betty, I hope you realize just how many people appreciate everything you’ve done—myself included.
