Orban declares victory in Hungarian election

Incumbent’s party leads vote despite opposition uniting to unseat him

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared himself the winner of Sunday’s elections in Hungary as his conservative Fidesz-KDNP party holds on to a comfortable lead amid the vote-counting. As of 9pm local time, the party is ahead with 59.99% of the votes, with 23.03% of party-list ballots counted.

Despite thesix leading opposition partiesuniting to try to knock out Orban’s government under its banner, United for Hungary has only 28.89% of the vote thus far, with right-wing nationalist party Our Home (Mi Hazánk) trailing in third at 6.58%.

Pollsters Medián had forecast a 49% win for Fidesz to 41% for United for Hungary, with Our Home expected to tie with joke party Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party (MKKP) for third place, with 4.5% of the vote. Budapest Business Journal has explained Fidesz’s lead may shrink as many urban districts around the capital have not yet reported their results, while all votes from the rural areas, home to Orban’s most enthusiastic supporters, are more likely to have been counted.

While United for Hungary attempted to smear Orban as a ‘Russian puppet' in the days leading up to the vote, the Hungarian leader’s refusal to completely cut off relations with Moscow has been seen by supporters as pragmatic, given the European nation gets most of its energy from Russia and has no alternative sources available to meet all its fuel needs in the event of an embargo.

“This isn’t our war, we have to stay out of it,” the premier said during a campaign rally on Friday, shutting down critics by pointing out that Ukrainian President “Zelensky is not voting today” nor is Russian President Vladimir “Putin…running in the Hungarian elections.”

Sunday’s election saw 67.8% of eligible voters casting ballots as of 6:30pm local time, with polls open until 7pm. Nearly a thousand election observers have been registered to watch the vote, and no anomalies have been reported since polling centers opened.

Also under consideration in Sunday’s vote was a referendum on child protection issues, which Orban’s government hopes will result in a mandate to shield underage children from being taught about sexual orientation, shown sexually explicit media, or exposed to supportive portrayals of gender reassignment therapy. The United for Hungary opposition called on its supporters to attempt to invalidate the referendum by marking both “yes” and “no” for the referendum’s questions.

Ukraine accused of election meddling

Kiev’s government maintains constant contact with the Hungarian opposition, Budapest said

Ukraine has been trying to interfere in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary, the country's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto claimed, on Tuesday,

“A few days ago, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry [Dmytro Kuleba] called the Ukrainian Embassy in Budapest to discuss the possibility of it influencing the results of the Hungarian elections,” Szijjarto asserted in a video address published on Facebook.

Hungarians are set to head to the polls on Thursday to decide on the new formation of the National Assembly. The race has been tight so far, with the latest polls suggesting that Orban’s ruling Fidesz party is only leading the six-party alliance of opposition parties, United for Hungary, by 41% to 39%.

“Constant negotiations are underway” between the Kiev authorities and the opponents of the Hungarian government, the FM insisted. Among other things, the opposition has already promised Ukraine to “immediately make a decision to supply weapons” to Ukraine, he added.

Szijjarto reiterated that, as long as the current Hungarian government remains in power, there would be no deliveries of “lethal aid” to the neighboring country.

Unlike some other EU states, Hungary has refused to either send weapons to Kiev during its conflict with Russia or let other states move such shipments through its territory. Budapest also refused to support the new round of sanctions against Moscow, especially in the energy sector, arguing that they would do more harm to Hungary than to Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko has denied Szijjarto’s accusations of election meddling, calling on Budapest to stop trying to “involve Ukraine in domestic political struggle” and to cease attempts to exploit "the sorrow of the Ukrainians.”

Instead of trying to gain Russia’s approval, Hungary should focus on promoting unity within the EU and NATO, as its security depends on it too, he added.

Zelensky can offer Russia sanctions relief for peace, US says

Secretary of State Antony Blinken(Another Beauty)says Washington will “allow” lifting of sanctions to help Ukraine negotiate end to the war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky got a green light from Washington to offer Russia relief from international sanctions in exchange for ending its military offensive against the former Soviet republic.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken opened the door to such an offer on Sunday, confirming in an NBC News interview that Zelensky has the ability to negotiate sanctions relief for peace. He said President Joe Biden’s administration will support whatever the Ukrainian people want to do to bring the war to an end.

“We’ll be looking to see what Ukraine is doing and what it wants to do,” Blinken said. “And if it concludes that it can bring this war to an end, stop the death and destruction and continue to assert its independence and its sovereignty – and ultimately that requires the lifting of sanctions – of course, we will allow that.”

The US and its allies are doing everything possible to strengthen Kiev’s hand at the negotiating table, but the sanctions are meant to influence Russia’s behavior – not to remain in place indefinitely, Blinken said. He brushed aside suggestions by NBC host Chuck Todd that now isn’t the time to negotiate away concessions to Russia, saying it’s up to Ukrainians how to end the war in Ukraine. He also rejected Todd’s assertion that the Russian president shouldn’t be allowed to remain in power, saying Vladimir Putin’s future is up to the Russian people.

Although Blinken argued that Putin has failed to accomplish his alleged objectives in Ukraine – subjugating Kiev, demonstrating Russia’s military prowess and dividing NATO members – he said it still makes sense to pursue a negotiated settlement. “Even though he’s been set back, even though I believe this is already a strategic defeat for Vladimir Putin, the death and destruction that he’s wreaking every single day in Ukraine . . . are terrible, and so there’s also a strong interest in bringing those to an end.”

(Blinken is probably the worst SOS in history, and he’s terrible at lying. No one believes him about anything!)

Other leaders have suggested that the West should be stingy with promises of sanctions relief to avoid rewarding Russia or letting Putin come through the crisis unscathed. In fact, Biden raised eyebrows last weekend by saying that Putin “cannot remain in power,” a comment that Blinken was forced to walk back, saying the US isn’t pursuing regime change in Russia or anywhere else.

Later in his show,Todd askedformer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,

“Can we really live in a world where Putin’s let back into the new world order?” Clinton agreed with Blinken, saying the US should support Ukrainians as they choose “the best way forward” for their country.
