Trio of Elephants Killed in 55 MPH Bus Crash After Being 'Hit at Once'

Kate Fowler - 1h ago

Abus in Zimbabwe reportedly hit three elephants, killing them on the spot, after the driver swerved to save another herd of elephants.

The bus, according to ZimEye, was traveling to Victoria Falls from Hawange on Saturday morning. All 18 passengers and the bus crew were left uninjured by the incident. A town and national park share the name Victoria Falls and it's unclear whether the accident occurred en route to the town or the national park.

According to reports, the bus driver swerved left to avoid hitting a first group of elephants on the road, but was unable to avoid subsequently hitting the trio that perished.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident in a tweet, writing: "It is unfortunate that three elephants were killed in an accident with a CAG bus about 45 km before Victoria Falls."

Farawo told ZimEye that the cause of the accident was not yet known. "Fortunately no human casualty was reported, but those three elephants died," he said.

The bus driver told ZimEye that the trio of elephants were in the middle of the road and turned their backs to the bus before being hit. "I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left. There were three groups so I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead," he said.

"The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once."

The driver was able to control the bus and avoided crashing into any trees, before stopping it around 50 meters from the carcasses. A witness said that the bus was driving at around 90 kph (55 mph).

In Zimbabwe, the elephant population has reportedly become an issue, with the country unable to host growing numbers.

It's estimated that the population is more than 100,000, the second-highest in the world, thanks to dedicated conservation measures.

According to conservationists, as per Brookings, the population is more than double the country's ecological carrying capacity with an estimated annual growth rate of five percent.

Victoria Falls plays host to a "vital" conservation program called The Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Orphanage and the accident occurred in a "wildlife marked zone."

Villagers living near the incident were later allowed to take home elephant meat from the accident scene, according to ZimEye. Residents arrived from nearby villages Masikili and Mbizha, as well as Lupinyu, Chikandakubi, Chenamisa and Victoria Falls City.

Mark Zuckerberg’s nickname at Facebook is the ‘Eye of Sauron’ - but founder founder insists it is ‘loving’

Employees at the social media giant Meta reportedly refer to founder Mark Zuckerberg as the ‘Eye of Sauron.’

Mark Zuckerberg revealed the nickname in an interview with podcast host Tim Ferriss. “Some of the folks who I work with at the company say this lovingly, but I think that they sometimes refer to my attention as the Eye of Sauron," said Mr Zuckerberg, referring to the Lord of the Rings villain usually depicted as a flaming eye that sees all and is the source of evil in Middle Earth.

Mr Zuckerberg said that the term referred to the amount of energy he has to work on projects.

"They’re like, ‘You have this unending amount of energy to go work on something. And if you point that at any given team, you will just burn them,’" Mr Zuckerberg said.

"I just think the engagement that you get of having, like, an immediate feedback loop around thinking about something and then getting to go talk to the people who are working on this is so much better than going and scheduling a meeting that you’ll have three weeks later."

Mr Zuckerberg’s reputation as an odd individual, one that might enjoy a comparison to an evil entity, has been commented on before.

During his announcement that he was creating a “metaverse”, a digital parallel to the real world, viewers of the Facebook Live video noticed that a BBQ sauce bottle was being used as a bookend.

“To show that he is a normal human who loves normal human things, like BBQ sauce”, a Twitter user wrote.

“Zuck using sweet baby ray’s BBQ sauce as a bookend is the most normal thing he’s ever done”, another said. The same sauce bottle had been seen in a video in 2016.

In the interview with Mr Ferriss, Mark Zuckerberg said he was unconcerned by external criticism now – with his main focus now being the metaverse.

"At this point, I kind of feel like if people fully feel like they understand what we are as a company and what we’re doing, then I’m not pushing it hard enough," he said.

Police were called to assist a wayward traveler in Southampton, New York, Sunday after a baby seal was spotted scooting through a traffic circle.

"Some of our officers responded and found a baby harbor seal in the roadway," a Facebook post from the Southampton Town Police Department said.

Residents called police after the seal was seen wandering through a Long Island parking lot, police Sergeant Jim Cavanagh told CNN. The seal made its way toward the entrance of a nearby hotel before it was contained in the traffic circle, Cavanagh said.

"What we believe happened is that the seal swam up the Potomac River, probably behind a big school of alewife fish," Cavanagh explained. "The seal probably climbed up out of the river ending up in a park. There, it probably just got turned around and then traveled somewhere between 500 and 700 feet into the traffic circle."

The New York Marine Resource Center sent a team to help retrieve the baby seal and it was brought to a rehabilitation center in Riverhead, rescue center Program Director Maxine Montello told CNN.

"The animal is in good condition," Montello said. "We just think he wandered a little too far from the beach. Hopefully we'll be able to get him back to the beach as soon as possible."

Montello said cases like this are uncommon but not unprecedented. A seal was recently found underneath someone's car and another was found in a Staten Island backyard several years ago, she said.

Harbor seals are usually seen resting on rocks and beaches along the coast and spend their time foraging for fish, shellfish and crustaceans, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Montello noted we are entering "seal season," when seals and humans are using Long Island beaches at the same time, and calls to the rescue hotline increase.

Seals are federally protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and experts say people should keep a minimum distance of 150 feet from the animals.
