This is actually a funny bit of spookery. The NATO reporting class "Akula" submarine was called the equivalent of "Typhoon" in Russian. The NATO designation for the Russian Akula submarine is "Typhoon."

The Akula class submarine is a hunter killer nuclear boat.

The Typhoon is a ballistic missile submarine.

Now… I would actually be concerned about the Kilo class boat if I was in charge of ASW. It is a diesel boat, but when on batteries, it is as quiet or quieter than our Virginia and Seawolf boats, as well as our older LA 2 and Ohio class boats. They are cost effective as a defensive force against a carrier battle group.

We are the aggressor in every realistic situation, this is why we do not invest in similarly effective diesel electric subs. We need to be in everyone else's waters, sniffing their prop wash.
