Multiple Children Gunned Down in Kentucky Shooting, Suspect at Large

Chloe Mayer - 3h ago

Three children—one aged just 7—were among those shot after a kids' fight turned deadly, with the suspect still at large, police say.

Detectives are hunting for the shooter after the brawl in Covington, Kentucky, which reportedly left four victims suffering from gunshot wounds; three children aged 7, 11, and 14, and a 41-year-old man.

The 14-year-old is reportedly a girl who was shot in the neck and is now in critical condition.

The shooting happened at around 6:45 p.m. on Monday evening after a large fight involving numerous juveniles, near the intersection of West 17th Street and Russell Street, police investigators told reporters.

Newsweek has contacted the Covington Police Department for further information.

A 12-year-old girl, whose full name was not given but who was interviewed on camera with the reported permission of her grandmother, told reporters at local news channel WLWT that she was friends with the 14-year-old girl now said to be fighting for her life in hospital.

Speaking with a large scratch running down her cheek, which she said she sustained in the scuffle, she said: "Gunshots go off and I'm right by the girl that got shot… Everybody started crying in there, people started hitting me. I thought I got shot. I was so scared. I covered my ears. I got down.

"I didn't know she [my friend] got shot until I ran up on my porch because my grandma tells me, 'When you hear gunshots, you get down low.' So I got down low. I ran up to my porch and I see her lying there… I noticed her blood came gushing out of her neck. And I got scared and I just started crying. And everybody was crying."

The victims' families gathered outside the emergency room entrance at Cincinnati Children's Hospital anxiously awaiting news.

The suspect is believed to be a juvenile and is not in custody yet. Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders was at the scene and says his office is drawing up search warrants in connection with the shooting, according to WLWT.

Robert Gary told the local Fox news site he was with his "traumatized" friend, whose son was one of those who had been shot. The victim's age was not revealed. Gary said he couldn't understand why or how the shooting had happened.

Many of those involved were filming the incident as it unfolded and multiple videos of the shooting are being turned over to police. Detectives now face the task of trawling through the footage as investigators try to work out how a kids' fight turned into a quadruple shooting.

Second arrest made in deadly Sacramento shooting

KATE FELDMAN - 11m ago

A second suspect was arrested Tuesday for the Sacramento shooting that left six people dead and 12 others injured.

Smiley Martin, 27, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun, the Sacramento Police Department announced Tuesday.

Martin’s brother, 26-year-old Dandrae, was arrested Monday and charged with assault with a firearm and for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Messages and candles are left at a makeshift memorial to the victims of Sunday's mass shooting at the corner of 10th and K street in Sacramento, Calif., on Monday, April 4, 2022. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/)

Neither brother, or any other suspect, has been charged directly with the shooting deaths.

Smiley Martin suffered “serious injuries from gunfire” at the scene of the shooting and was rushed to an area hospital for treatment, according to officials. There, he was identified as a person of interest and kept under guard by an officer.

He will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail as soon as his medical treatment is complete and he can be released from the hospital.

Multiple people were killed and injured in the shooting. (JOSE CARLOS FAJARDO/)

The gunfire broke out early Sunday near 10th and K streets after what police believe was an argument. Detectives have collected more than 100 expended shell casings from the scene, as well as a stolen handgun that had been converted to fire automatically.

The six fatalities have been identified as Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21. The three male victims were identified as Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and Devazia Turner, 29.

Special counsel Durham wants to bring up Trump-Russia dossier at trial against Clinton campaign lawyer

By Marshall Cohen, CNN - 3h ago

Special counsel John Durham wants to bring up the infamous Trump-Russia dossier and might even call its author Christopher Steele as a witness at the upcoming criminal trial of Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann, according to court papers filed on Monday.

Two late-night filings from Sussmann and Durham provided the first indication that the special counsel plans to introduce Steele and his politically fraught dossier from 2016 into the case.

Sussmann was charged with lying in regard to a September 2016 meeting with a senior FBI official, where he provided a tip about strange cyberactivity between the Trump Organization and a major Russian bank. Prosecutors say Sussmann falsely denied providing the tip on behalf of a client – and was really working for the Clinton campaign at the time. He has pleaded not guilty.

The new filings on Monday suggest that instead of narrowly focusing on Sussmann's alleged lie and the specific meeting where it allegedly occurred, Durham plans to describe at the trial how the Clinton campaign tried to dig up dirt about then-candidate Donald Trump and his ties to Russia.

Attorneys for Sussmann want the judge to block Durham from introducing evidence about the dossier at trial and to stop prosecutors from calling Steele as a witness at the trial next month.

"The Special Counsel should not be permitted to turn Mr. Sussmann's trial on a narrow false statement charge into a circus full of sideshows that will only fuel partisan fervor," the lawyers wrote, saying Steele's work has "no bearing" on the case and is "inflammatory and irrelevant."

Durham's prosecutors said in their own filing that they expect to bring up at trial an old Steele deposition about a meeting he had with Sussmann where they discussed the Trump-Russia cyber claims. Taken together, the filings indicate Durham may try to call Steele as a witness.

It's ultimately up to Judge Christopher Cooper of the DC District Court to decide how much information about Steele can come up at trial. He is also reviewing a motion from Sussmann to throw out the indictment altogether, citing legal flaws. Durham's team says their case is sound.

The Durham investigation has repeatedly faced criticism for trying to keep alive right-wing grievances about the Russia probe. Durham hasn't brought any cases alleging the widespread abuses by US intelligence or law enforcement agencies that are central to these grievances.

There's no indication in the 27-page indictment against Sussmann that he discussed the Steele dossier during his meeting in September 2016 with then-FBI general counsel James Baker, where Sussmann allegedly uttered the false statement that is the basis of his criminal charge.

However, Sussmann was working at the time for Perkins Coie, the law firm that was retained by the Clinton campaign and indirectly hired Steele to research the Trump-Russia relationship. And Sussmann met with Steele one month before he met Baker, but he didn't know that the dossier existed until after the 2016 election, according to Sussmann's previous testimony to Congress.

The Steele dossier contained explosive and salacious allegations about Trump, including unproven claims that his campaign worked closely with the Kremlin to defeat Clinton in 2016. But in the years since that election, a series of federal investigations and civil lawsuits have discredited many of Steele's central allegations and exposed the unreliability of his sources.

If Durham is allowed to bring up the dossier at trial, it would put a spotlight on the secretive efforts by Clinton allies to push the collusion narrative, which has become a hotly debated political topic. Trump denies wrongdoing and says the Democrats faked his ties to Russia, while many Democrats still believe Trump's dealings with Russia are a grave national security threat.

The FBI investigated Sussman's tip but didn't find any improper cyberlinks between the Trump Organization and the Moscow-based Alfa Bank. But related inquiries found substantial ties between Trump's orbit and Russians who were connected to the Kremlin's pro-Trump meddling efforts. The new filing now indicates that Sussmann's case will likely revisit some of this history.

Apersonal injury attorney in Florida who allegedly drove over four people with her car because she was hearing voices in her head has been suspended from the state Bar.

Beatrice Bijoux, 31, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of high speed or wanton fleeing and four counts of attempted murder, according to The Miami Herald.

Witnesses claim Ms Bijoux was driving her car outside The Fresh Market in Stuart, Florida, on 22 February when she allegedly began running people down with her car by driving on the sidewalk. They said the attack began when Ms Bijoux ran her car over a curb and smashed into a table outside the story, sending an individual flying into a concrete wall. Another vicim told CBS 12 News that she did not see her car coming before she was hit.

Police reviewed security footage, which showed a black KIA driving around and hitting people sitting and walking on the sidewalk. They claim Ms Bijoux made no attempt to slow down and was driving around 30 and 35 mph during the attack.

One individual had to be hospitalised following the incident. Another tried to stop her after she allegedly ran down one victim, but she reportedly tried to drive over that person as well. He jumped to safety.

Police chased Ms Bijoux, but she eventually drove to the police station and stopped her car. They claim she then exited and told them that she intended to hit the individuals. Her arrest report claims she told police that "voices in her head had told her to kill the people." She also reportedly told police that she wanted to kill herself as well.

According to WPBF, police responding to the incident said that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in 2019, but had not been to her doctor since December, and reportedly had not been taking her medication.

When she was asked if she had ever tried to hurt anyone else, she said she had not, but "could not explain why today was different," the arrest report said.

Her arrest report ends with a chilling claim.

“Bijoux further stated that she thought about killing her 4-year-old niece today," it said. "The niece lives with Bijoux part-time.”

She is currently being held without bond in the Martin County Jail. On 21 March, the state's Supreme Court granted the Bar's request for an emergency suspension of Ms Bijoux. She had been a member of the Bar since 2016.
