Former RNC Aide Sentenced to 12 Years for 'Requesting Videos of Babies'

A former senior ad designer for the Republican National Committee who called the sexual abuse of babies his "absolute favorite" has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for receipt of child pornography.

Ruben Verastigui of Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty to charges of having 162 videos and more than 50 images of child pornography on his phone in July 2021. On Thursday, a federal judge sentenced Verastigui to 151 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He will be required to register as a sex offender for at least 15 years.

Verastigui, 29, was active in an online group with at least 18 members dedicated to trading child pornography and discussing child sexual abuse, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Verastigui shared child pornography videos with another member of the group and made numerous comments about sexually abusing children.

Verastigui told the group his preference was for babies, saying they were his "absolute favorite," and solicited another member of the group for videos of babies being raped, according to court documents.

"The other group member promptly sent Verastigui a video of a baby being raped, to which Verastigui responded enthusiastically," court documents say. "The other group member then sent Verastigui numerous other videos of child pornography videos to Verastigui, including depictions of adults performing oral sex on babies."

Verastigui commented on videos saying he "wished they were longer," according to court records.

Verastigui admitted to being part of the group with the display name "Landon" and the handle "@somethingtaken" when Department of Homeland Security agents executed a search warrant on his apartment in February.

Verastigui was arrested on February 5, the day of the search warrant, and has been in custody ever since, according to the DOJ.

Verastigui worked as digital director for the Joint Economic Committee from 2018 to 2019, and as a digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference from 2019 to 2020. He was previously a senior designer for the Republican National Committee, where he created digital campaign ads.

In 2020, there were 618,399 victims of child abuse in the U.S. Most cases reported were among young children, with 136,600 victims 1-year-old or younger, and another 150,673 victims were between the ages of 2 and 5 years old, according to Statista.

Homeland Security Investigations Child Exploitation Investigations Unit rescued 1,177 child victims in child exploitation investigations in 2021. The unit arrested 3,776 individuals for crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children and helped to secure more than 1,500 convictions.

Ruben A. Verastigui was arrested last night for allegedly soliciting, possessing, and distributing extremely violent child pornography depicting infants being raped by adult men, police say.

Prior to his arrest, Verastigui worked for a Republican policy group, and prior to this, worked for establishment Republicans in the Senate.

The last tweet he sent before being arrested lauded the 11 Republican Congressmen who joined with Democrats to strip Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee posts.

“Between March 2020 and February 2021, an investigation revealed the suspect distributed, received, and possessed images of child pornography,” the D.C. Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

They reveal that on Friday, “27 year-old Ruben Verastigui, of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged with Distribution of Child Pornography.”

Police released a screenshot purportedly showing Verastigui describing his “love” of baby rape videos.

“Well like I said babies are some of my biggest turn-ons,” Verastigui allegedly wrote. “I have been wanting to see videos of guys hardcore raping a baby… when a baby screams it’s my favorite.”

“I’ve lost a lot of videos,” police say Verastigui wrote. “So only have one I’ve been jerking off to [sic]”

Police say Verastigui sent and received horrifying videos depicting infant rape in group chat police were monitoring, believing those in the chat were fellow pedophiles.

“One of the videos depicts an infant/toddler and an adult male,” police say. “The adult male puts his erect penis on the infant/toddler’s mouth and lips.”

The police also reveal that Verastigui invited a member of the group chat to “come to DC for the purpose of sexually abusing a minor.”

Another video received by Verastigui “depicts an infant/toddler who is anally raped by an adult male.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Verastigui has worked for entrenched conservative causes since at least 2012, when he interned for Students for Life of America, a pro-life group.

He has worked for a long series of pro-life groups in addition to Students for Life, with Live Action, March for Life, and Texas Right to Life on his resume.

More recently, Verastigui worked for the Republican National Committee, and the United States Senate.

While working for the Senate, he was a “Senior Digital Strategist” for the Senate Republican Conference, where he worked under establishment Republican Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY).

Prior to this, he was the Digital Director for the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee, working under Chairman Erik Paulsen (R-MN).

Since July of 2020, he has worked at Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, a Republican think tank that works with Republicans to promote “clean energy.”

Verastigui’s last tweet before his arrest was celebrating the 11 Republicans who joined Democrats in a vote to strip Rep. Greene of her committees.

Another recent tweet decries the Capitol Hill protests on January 6.

“What I’m seeing going on right now on the steps of our Capitol is appalling!” wrote Verastigui. “My party is the party of Judeo Christian values, freedom of religion and freedom of speech, NOT the party of violence.”

“These people DO NOT represent the #Conservative party.”

National File contacted Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions via email, and the organization clarified that Verastigui has been fired.

“The details of the allegations against Mr. Verastigui are tragic and shocking,” they wrote. “He is no longer employed by the organization and we are prepared to fully cooperate with law enforcement requests in this matter to any extent needed.”

Ruben Verastigui is the former Republican aide facing a child pornography charge in Washington, D.C. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Verastigui was arrested on February 5 following a nearly year-long investigation.

Verastigui was working for the Senate Republican Conference when the investigation began, according to his LinkedIn page. He previously worked for the Republican National Committee and his job included designing digital ads for former President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, Verastigui noted on his LinkedIn account.

Court records show a public defender was assigned to represent Verastigui. Heavy reached out to the attorney for comment. We have not yet heard back.

1. Verastigui Wrote in a Group Chat That He Enjoyed Watching Pornography Involving Babies: Report

Heavy is working to obtain a copy of the criminal complaint detailing the case against Verastigui. As of this writing, the complaint had not been made publicly available through the D.C. Superior Court. But according to excerpts shared online, federal investigators found written statements attributed to Verastigui in which he expressed that he enjoyed watching babies being sexually abused.

According to the Daily Beast, Homeland Security agents uncovered a website that at least 18 people were using to share child pornography. Law enforcement has not publicly identified the website because the investigation is ongoing.

Verastigui talked about his desire to watch pornography depicting babies in a group chat, according to the criminal complaint cited by the Daily Beast. In one exchange Verastigui allegedly wrote, “Well like I said babies are some of my biggest turn-ons and beast. Young rape… F*** I love all that.”

Resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, Jared Holt, first reported the news about Verastigui’s arrest on Twitter. He also shared screenshots that he said were from the criminal complaint. According to one excerpt, Verastigui was sent videos of men sexually abusing babies. Verastigui then allegedly asked the person who sent him the videos to “come to DC for the purpose of sexually abusing a minor.”

Verastigue attended Northwest Vista College in San Antonio from 2011 until 2014, according to his LinkedIn account. During that time, he served as the president of the campus Students for Life organization.

He was identified as such on CSPAN when he spoke at the national March for Life rally in 2013 (although CSPAN misspelled his name on the screen). During his speech, which was also shared on YouTube, Verastigue declared that the younger generation would be the one to “abolish abortion.” He asked the crowd, “How many of us are missing brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, because of abortion? How many people are missing here today… because of abortion?”

His profile on the Students for Life website appears to have been taken down. But the group confirmed with the Washington Post that Verastigue was involved as a student and worked on graphic design for the organization from September 2014 until December 2016. A spokeswoman for Students for Life told the Post that Verastigue did not manage students while working for the group.

1. Investigators Found Child Pornography on Verastigui’s Phone While Executing a Search Warrant at His Home

Ruben Verastigui was arrested at his home on February 5.

Verastigui was arrested at his home in northeast Washington, D.C. on February 5, according to a public incident report Heavy received via email from the Metropolitan Police Department. According to the report, officers with the Northern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which includes Homeland Security agents and D.C. police officers, executed a search warrant at Verastigui’s home. He was present at the time of the search.

The report states that the “defendant was identified as an individual who had distributed child pornography via the use of the internet.” According to the Washington Post, investigators also looked through Verastigui’s cellphone and found “several files of child pornography” as well as a “chat conversation” about sharing the videos. The Post, citing the complaint, reported that Verastigui acknowledged that he had received some of the child pornography files.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Verastigue was charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography. Records on the D.C. Superior Court website show a hearing on his case was held on February 6 but it was not clear whether the judge set a bond. Verastigue remained behind bars as of February 7 at the D.C. Central Detention Facility, according to a national inmate database.

Verastigui started working at the non-profit organization “Citizens For Responsible Energy Solutions” in July 2020. He was hired as a communications manager, according to his LinkedIn profile.

But in light of his arrest, the organization has terminated Verastigui. A spokesperson said in a statement to the Daily Beast, “The details of the allegations against Mr. Verastigui are tragic and shocking. He is no longer employed by the organization and we are prepared to fully cooperate with law enforcement requests in this matter to any extent needed.”

1. Verastigui Relocated From Texas in 2017 to Work for the GOP

Verastigui is a native of San Antonia, Texas, the San Antonio Current reported. According to his LinkedIn profile, Verastigui worked as a digital account coordinator in Austin before relocating to Washington, D.C. in May 2017.

He posted about the move on Instagram by sharing a photo of his arm tattoo, which reads, “Nobody need wait.” According to the Washington Post, the criminal complaint mentioned that Verastigui was identified in part because of a tattoo on his left forearm.

Verastigui started working for the Republican National Committee in May 2017. He wrote on LinkedIn that his job included designing political ads for local and national campaigns, producing photos and videos for web campaigns and leading the redesign for vote.gop. He also wrote that he “designed social media creative and digital ads for the Trump Make America Great Again Committee and Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.”

After about a year with the RNC, Verastigui took a job with the Senate. He started as a digital director for the congressional Joint Economic Committee before becoming the senior digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference. The Post cited a spokesperson who confirmed via email that Verastigue had worked for the Republican Conference.
