Politics fascinated the young Robert Schumer. As a 10-year-old he knocked on the doors of the campaign offices in his Brooklyn neighborhood, offering to distribute leaflets or do administrative work.

When he graduated from the Columbia University School of Law, he joined a Manhattan law firm, figuring that sooner or later he would move into government, as did his older brother, United States Rep. Charles Schumer. But the younger Schumer grew to like the deals his firm, Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, handled for large corporations. He soon gave up the pursuit of politics and became a young partner at the firm in 1991.

"I find that corporate transactions are the closest thing in intensity to a political campaign," Mr. Schumer says. "I like the dynamics of all the different cultures involved."

His first big assignment came in 1987, when he helped Reginald Lewis in his $985 million buyout of the international division of Beatrice Foods. Mr. Lewis grew close to the attorney, and tried to get him to join Beatrice. Mr. Schumer stayed with his firm, and went on to represent Warner Communications in its 1989 merger with Time Inc.

He continues to handle work for Time Warner Inc. More recently, he represented Lazard Freres & Co. in its role in the Borden Foods-Kohlberg Kravis Roberts deal.

"When you're working on a transaction, you're always figuring out how to bridge the gap, and how everyone will get along after the contract is signed," he says. Mr. Schumer, who recently got married, plays tennis once a week and cooks for relaxation. "I'm not a very good cook," he says. "I just like to do it."
