Will Smith slapped with 10-year Oscar ban

Academy issued suspension to protect ‘safety of our performers and guests’

Will Smith slapped with 10-year Oscar ban

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will bar actor and recording artist Will Smith from attending any of its events for the next 10 years, the organization revealed on Friday.

The decision was made by the group’s Board of Governors and published in an open letter addressed “to our Academy Family.” It was signed by the Academy’s president, David Rubin, and its CEO, Dawn Hudson.

Smith’s banishment is in response to his “unacceptable and harmful” actions on stage, a reference to the much-discussed physical altercation during last month's Oscars telecast. Smith stormed the stage after host Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s conspicuous hair loss – the result of a medical condition – and slapped the comedian, cursing him out.

Shortly after the incident, Smith went on to accept an Academy Award for Best Actor, and issued an apology to the Academy for his behavior, but notably not to Rock himself, until a day later.

The Academy letter notes that the Board of Governors “accepted Mr. Smith’s resignation” from the decades-old media organization on Friday and expresses “deep gratitude” to Rock for “maintaining his composure” before voicing hope of “healing and restoration for all involved.”

Russia accuses Ukraine of ‘barbarism’

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on Western nations to stop supplying Ukraine's armed forces with weapons in the wake of a missile attack on a train station in the city of Kramatorsk that killed dozens of civilians on Friday.

The ministry has requested that the international community “make an unbiased assessment” of the actions of the Ukrainian forces and “stop supplying them with weapons, as well as urge Kiev to abandon unacceptable fighting methods.”

Earlier, Moscow accused Kiev of being behind the attack that has claimed the lives of 50 people, including five children, according to the latest assessments provided by both sides.

Kramatorsk is a city in the northern part of the Donetsk region and is claimed by the Donetsk People’s Republic as part of its territory. When hostilities broke out in eastern Ukraine in the wake of the 2014 Maidan coup, the city remained under Kiev’s control.

It is the Ukrainian army that employs Tochka-U ballistic missiles, similar to the one that hit the central train station in Kramatorsk, the Foreign Ministry reminded, repeating the claims made earlier by the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Russian military also said earlier that it had pinpointed the location from which the missile had allegedly been launched. According to defense officials, it came from the town of Dobropole, which is located southwest of Kramatorsk and has been under the control of Ukrainian forces.

The Foreign Ministry has denounced the attack as a “barbaric act of aggression” and said that it only proves Russia had been right to launch its military operation to protect the two Donbass republics it had earlier recognized. The attack on Kramatorsk also closely resembles another missile strike that killed 17 people in the city of Donetsk in mid-March, it has added.

“We are convinced that the Kiev authorities will not escape justice,” the ministry’s statement said.

Kiev has accused Russia of being behind the strike in Kramatorsk, claiming it was a deliberate attack on civilians fleeing the conflict. President Volodymyr Zelensky has called it another example of Russia’s “evil” that “knows no boundaries.”

Some Ukrainian officials had initially claimed the station was hit by a Russian Iskander missile. However, images of a fragment of a Tochka-U were taken at the scene and later surfaced on social media.

Certain Western nations have already pledged more military support to Ukraine in the wake of the Kramatorsk attack. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Friday that London would send Ukraine additional military aid worth $130 million, including more Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and 800 anti-tank missiles.

"The attack … shows the depths to which Putin's vaunted army has sunk," Johnson has told a news conference after meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in London. "It is a war crime indiscriminately to attack civilians, and Russia's crimes in Ukraine will not go unnoticed or unpunished,” he has added, without providing or citing any evidence.

Moscow launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine in late February, following Ukraine's failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014, and Russia's eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military alliance. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was complete

US sends ‘Patriot’ to EU

Slovakia receives Patriot missile system after shipping S-300 to Ukraine

The US has pledged to replace the S-300 missile defense system that Slovakia sent to Ukraine with one of its own Patriot systems, President Joe Biden announced on Friday. Bratislava previously revealed it had “donated” its only S-300 system to Kiev earlier on Friday.

“I want to thank the Slovakian government for providing an S-300 air defense system to Ukraine, something [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelensky has personally raised with me in our conversations,” Biden declared in a statement promising a substitute system.

The US president also issued a vague warning against “complacency” in NATO’s response to Russian military activity in Ukraine, stating that “as the Russian military repositions for the next phase of this war, I have directed my Administration to continue to spare no effort to identify and provide to the Ukrainian military the advanced weapons capabilities it needs to defend its country.”

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin promised to deliver the missiles “in coming days,” while acknowledging there was no “fixed” deployment length, and that Washington was still consulting with the Slovak government over “more permanent air defense solutions.” However, he said the deployment of the Patriot system “aligns perfectly” with US efforts to bolster NATO’s air defenses.

The US has shipped tens of billions of dollars’ worth of weapons and other military aid to Ukraine in the last several weeks to bolster the Zelensky government’s fight against Russia. A number of European allies have also joined in sending military aid. While the Kremlin has expressed hope that the war could be over in the near future, it has also accused Kiev of backpedaling on peace negotiations, claiming that the Ukrainian side is attempting to stall for time and continue the conflict. Moscow has also argued that further weapons deliveries will only prolong the agony and that they could be targeted by the Russian military.

Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger stressed that the “donation” of his country’s only S-300 missile defense system to Ukraine did not constitute entering the war against Russia, declaring in a Facebook post that he had made the “responsible” decision since the system was “purely defensive.” While he did not name the US at the time, he promised Bratislava had not compromised its own security, pledging its air defenses would soon be replenished by “allies.”

Russia bans Western NGOs

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are among the shuttered Russian branches of US, UK, German and Polish NGOs

Russia has ordered shut more than a dozen local branches of nonprofits, foundations and other NGOs based in the West, saying they have violated Russian law.

Among the organizations affected are Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, and several German and Polish NGOs.

The Justice Ministry in Moscow announced on Friday that it will be removing from the registry fifteen Russian branches of organizations based in the US, UK, Germany, and Poland, citing “identified violations of Russian law.”

Russia’s ban applies to branches of the UK-based Amnesty International Ltd, the US-based Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, Human Rights Watch Inc, and the Institute for International Education. Russian branches of the Swiss-based Aga Khan Foundation and the Polish NGO Wspólnota Polska were likewise shuttered.

Most of the banned NGOs are German, however, including the foundations named after Friedrich Naumann, Friedrich Ebert, Konrad Adenauer, Hanns Seidel, Heinrich Boell, and Rosa Luxemburg – as well as the German Research Foundation offices in Russia.

Amnesty International claimed on Thursday that Russia engaged in “extrajudicial executions and other unlawful killings” in Ukraine that need to be investigated as war crimes. Russia has rejected these accusations, which originated with the Ukrainian government, insisting that its ongoing military operation in Ukraine is not targeting civilians.

Meanwhile, US Senators Rick Scott (R-Florida) and Mike Braun (R-Indiana) have proposed a bill that would block any taxpayer funding to Amnesty International (AI), accusing the group of “false, antisemitic reports attacking Israel, America's strongest ally in the Middle East.”

The two senators said AI has received more than $2.5 million from the US government over the past 20 years alone.

Caitlin Johnstone: US officials admit they're literally just lying to the public about Russia

From spreading no-evidence claims to outright lying, all is fair to 'get inside Putin’s head', apparently

By Caitlin Johnstone, an independent journalist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her website is here and you can follow her on Twitter @caitoz

NBC News has a new report out citing multiple anonymous US officials, humorously titled "In a break with the past, U.S. is using intel to fight an info war with Russia, even when the intel isn't rock solid."

The officials say the Biden administration has been rapidly pushing out "intelligence" about Russia's plans in Ukraine that is "low-confidence" or "based more on analysis than hard evidence", or even just plain false, in order to fight an information war against Putin.

The report says that toward this end the US government has deliberately circulated false or poorly evidenced claims about impending chemical weapons attacks, about Russian plans to orchestrate a false flag attack in the Donbass to justify an invasion, about Putin's advisors misinforming him, and about Russia seeking arms supplies from China.

Psyops in the U.S. targeting the public used to be illegal, even though the way they got around it was to plant stories in the foreign press. But over the last five years beginning with Russiagate & now Ukraine, it is clear that U.S. public is fair game: https://t.co/gcEWoCZbkB

— Ajamu Baraka (@ajamubaraka) April 6, 2022

Excerpt, emphasis mine:

It was an attention-grabbing assertion that made headlines around the world: U.S. officials said they had indications suggesting Russia might be preparing to use chemical agents in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden later said it publicly. But three U.S. officials told NBC News this week there is no evidence Russia has brought any chemical weapons near Ukraine. They said the U.S. released the information to deter Russia from using the banned munitions.

It’s one of a string of examples of the Biden administration’s breaking with recent precedent by deploying declassified intelligence as part of an information war against Russia. The administration has done so even when the intelligence wasn’t rock solid, officials said, to keep Russian President Vladimir Putin off balance.

So they lied. They may hold that they lied for a noble reason, but they lied. They knowingly circulated information they had no reason to believe was true, and that lie was amplified by all the most influential media outlets in the western world.

Another example of the Biden administration releasing a false narrative as part of its "information war":

Likewise, a charge that Russia had turned to China for potential military help lacked hard evidence, a European official and two U.S. officials said.

The U.S. officials said there are no indications China is considering providing weapons to Russia. The Biden administration put that out as a warning to China not to do so, they said.

On the empire's claim last week that Putin is being misled by his advisors because they are afraid of telling him the truth, NBC reports that this assessment "wasn’t conclusive — based more on analysis than hard evidence."

I'd actually made fun of this ridiculous CIA press release when it was uncritically published disguised as a breaking news report by The New York Times:

Breaking News: The most influential newspaper in the English-speaking world routinely passes off CIA press releases as "Breaking News". https://t.co/aBzhidbozv

— Caitlin Johnstone ⏳ (@caitoz) March 30, 2022

We'd also had fun with State Department Spokesman Ned Price's bizarre February impersonation of Alex Jones, where he wrongly claimed that Russia was about to release a "false flag" video using crisis actors to justify its invasion:

US Again Tries To Pass Off Government Assertions As Evidence"This is the kind of evidence you can't see. The evidence is invisible."https://t.co/mEqIsS0cUS

— Caitlin Johnstone ⏳ (@caitoz) February 4, 2022

Other US government lies discussed in the NBC report were less cute:

In another disclosure, U.S. officials said one reason not to provide Ukraine with MiG fighter jets is that intelligence showed Russia would view the move as escalatory.

That was true, but it was also true of Stinger missiles, which the Biden administration did provide, two U.S. officials said, adding that the administration declassified the MiG information to bolster the argument not to provide them to Ukraine.

So the Biden administration knew it was sending weapons to Ukraine that would be perceived by a nuclear superpower as a provocative escalation, sent them anyway, and then lied about it. Cool, cool, cool.

This NBC report confirms rumors we've been hearing for months. Professional war cheerleader Max Boot said via The Council on Foreign Relations think tank in February that the Biden administration had ushered in "a new era of info ops" with intelligence releases designed not to tell the truth but to influence Putin's decisions. Former MI6 chief John Sawers told The Atlantic Council think tank in February that the Biden administration's "intelligence" releases were based more on a general vibe than actual intelligence, and were designed to manipulate rather than to inform.

Amazing interview with of the former MI6 chief with the Atlantic Council's @B_judah (the whole gang present) where the intel goon admits that many western "intel leaks" media outlets are dutifully conveying aren't real leaks but propaganda messages designed to undercut Putin. pic.twitter.com/UOzBxG5F5H

And in case you were wondering, no, NBC did not just publish a major leak by whistleblowers within the US government who are bravely exposing the lies of the powerful with the help of the free press. One of the article's authors is Ken Dilanian, who in 2014 was revealed to have worked as a literal CIA asset while writing for The LA Times. If you see Dilanian's name in a byline, you may be certain that you are reading exactly what the managers of the US empire want you to read.

So why are they telling us all this now? Is the US government not worried that it will lose the trust of the public by admitting that it is continuously lying about its most high-profile international conflict? And if this is an "information war" designed to "get inside Putin’s head" as NBC's sources claim, wouldn't openly reporting it through the mainstream press completely defeat the purpose?

Well, the answer to those questions is where it gets really creepy. I welcome everyone's feedback and theories on the matter, but as near as I can figure the only reason the US government would release this story to the public is because they want the general public to know about it. And the only plausible reason I can think of that they would want the public to know about it is that they are confident the public will consent to being lied to.

To get a better sense of what I'm getting at, it helps to watch the televised version of this report in which Dilanian and NBC anchor Alison Morris enthuse about how brilliant and wonderful it is that the Biden administration is employing these psychological warfare tactics to mess with Putin's mind:

The message an indoctrinated NBC viewer will get when watching this segment is, "Isn't this awesome? Our president is pulling off all these cool 3D chess moves to beat Putin, and we're kind of a part of it!"

It's been obvious for a long time that the US empire has been working to shore up narrative control to strengthen its hegemonic domination of the planet via internet censorship, propaganda, Silicon Valley algorithm manipulation, and the normalization of the persecution of journalists. We may now simply be at the stage of imperial narrative control where they can begin openly manufacturing the consent of the public to be lied to for their own good.

Fake US government agents arrested

Just as the smear campaign against Julian Assange trained mainstream liberals to defend the right of their government to keep dark secrets from them, we may now be looking at the stage of narrative control advancement where mainstream liberals are trained to defend the right of their government to lie to them.

The US is ramping up cold war aggressions against Russia and China in a desperate attempt to secure unipolar hegemony, and psychological warfare traditionally plays a major role in cold war maneuverings due to the inability to aggress in more overt ways against nuclear-armed foes. So now would definitely be the time to get the "thinkers" of America's two mainstream political factions fanatically cheerleading their government's psywar manipulations.

A casual glance around the internet at what mainstream liberals are saying about this NBC report shows that this is indeed what is happening. In liberal circles there does appear to be widespread acceptance of the world's most powerful government using the world's most powerful media institutions to lie to the public for strategic gains. If this continues to be accepted, it will make things a whole lot easier for the empire managers going forward.

Russia vs Ukraine: is big tech choosing sides?

Big tech companies are answering Ukraine's calls to defend against Russian aggression. However, some remain silent or neutral, infuriating many users.

Last week, Ukraine called on the hacker underground to help them fight Russian aggression in the cyber realm. There are at least a dozen different groups of hackers and researchers, with Anonymous being the most prominent one, investing their effort and knowledge in helping Ukraine.

Russian hackers also opened fire on the cyber front - Conti, CyberGhost, Sandworm, among others, are siding with Putin and trying to bring different Ukrainian organizations down.

However, their allegiance might not be that sound. A member of the Conti ransomware gang has leaked the group's internal chat after Conti's aggressive message aimed at Putin's foes.

While underground hackers fight their own war, businesses also seem to be choosing sides.

Social media giants react to Ukrainian requests

Facebook owner Meta has barred the Belarusian-backed hacking collective Ghostwriter from its social media platforms. It blocked all domains associated with the malicious hacker group after it was found spreading disinformation on Facebook, hijacking the accounts of several prominent figures, including military leaders and journalists, to show fake footage of the Ukrainian army surrendering - a further indication that the conflict has spilled over into a digital information war.

Reacting to the request of the Ukrainian government, it has also restricted some accounts in Ukraine, some of which belong to the Russian state media organizations.

VPN providers chipping in

Andy Yen, founder and CEO of ProtonMail and ProtonVPN, said he would be donating 10% of the company's income to Ukrainians.

"For the next 2 weeks, we are donating 10% of revenue from new @ProtonMail and @ProtonVPN subscriptions to relief efforts in #Ukraine. Freedom and privacy are human rights so basic Proton services are always free, but you can subscribe to support our mission and users in Ukraine," he tweeted.

Proton offers both free and paid subscriptions.https://cybernews.com/editorial/russia-vs-ukraine-is-big-tech-choosing-sides/
