9000+ U.S. Flights Delayed, 1100+ Canceled Friday-Saturday; Storm Threatens Next Week’s Travel Plans

Flight delays and cancellations continue to plague the travel industry as over 6,700 flights within, into, or out of the United States were delayed Friday.

The delays were accompanied by 714 cancellations in the U.S. and 2,970 cancellations worldwide. Moreover, 17,314 total flights worldwide were delayed Friday, flight-tracking site FlightAware reported. In terms of airlines, Southwest saw the most delays with 1,348, followed by Delta’s 629. Of JetBlue flights, 599 flights took off later than scheduled, totaling 55 percent of its scheduled trips. Spirit Airlines saw delays on 378, or 46 percent, of its flights, while 539 of United’s flights were delayed.

Airlines were having trouble Saturday as well. As of 3:30 p.m., 447 flights within, into, or out of the United States were canceled, and an additional 2,226 delayed, according to FlightAware. JetBlue canceled 182, or 17 percent, of its flights by 3:30 p.m., and passengers on 329, or 32 percent, of its flights experienced delays.

Customers took to Twitter to voice their displeasure over delays and cancellations.

One outraged woman, who goes by the Twitter handle @BagladyKiim, alleged that JetBlue had “inexplicably cancelled” three of the return flights she was scheduled to take home from her last four trips:

@JetBlue nice job cancelling our flight 10 hours before take off with no explanation. We have no hotel, need to return car rental and missing obligations at home. Fourth flight in a row by you where the return flight was changed and third where it was inexplicably cancelled.

Hank Lockwood, a producer for Barstool Sports, said he has been hearing “horror stories” of canceled flights.

The delays came after more than 3,500 flights were canceled and 8,800 were delayed last weekend, as Breitbart News reported:

The airlines cited different reasons for the mass cancellations and delays. JetBlue cited “severe weather in the Southeast and multiple air traffic control delay programs,” as a reason for the delays. Southwest Airlines blamed “weather and airspace congestion” and a “technology issue” for their cancelations and delays.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has remained mum as travelers deal with prolonged delays and frequent cancellations.

CNN noted that staffing issues and weather had each played a role in the airline chaos.

A brewing storm threatens to make matters worse next week as AccuWeather meteorologists “say it could result in a five-day stretch of threatening severe weather as well as a robust snowstorm that could produce dangerous blizzard conditions,” the outlet reported.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham, “Numerous disruptions to travel and shipping efforts are likely, with the potential for power outages as a result of rain, thunderstorms, wind and snow from the unfolding and strengthening storm next week over the middle of the nation.”

The storm threatens to bring feet of snow to central Colorado, Wyoming, Western Nebraska, Southeastern Montana, parts of Minnesota, and the Dakotas, according to Accuweather. Intense thunderstorms are shaping up to hit areas from the Gulf Coast up through the Great Lakes between Tuesday and Thursday, while the West Coast is expected to experience milder effects from the weather system, with rain possibly making landfall in northern California and Oregon on Sunday night. The forecast shows rain and showers in the Northeast.

Rand Paul: Did Nancy Pelosi Receive Monoclonal Antibodies?

Friday, during an appearance on FNC’s “Hannity,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) suggested there was a possibility of a double standard for Democratic politicians and the public for receiving monoclonal antibodies.

The Kentucky Republican U.S. Senator asked if recently COVID-diagnosed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had received those therapies while they were restricted for those in the general public.

“What’s even worse than that it’s not just production which is controlled by the government,” he said. “It’s also the fact that they’ve actually withdrawn the Sotrovimab. They withdrew it because they say it’s not working in the laboratory, but thousands of doctors across the country are saying — well, it still appears to be working in the clinical practice. See, this happened in January. They withdrew the first two monoclonals because they said they weren’t working in the lab. Meanwhile, thousands of doctors were left with no treatment, and they were saying we think it still works.”

“So this is what’s going on now, and this is why it’s going to be a very important question for Nancy Pelosi,” Paul continued. “Did she receive the monoclonal? And so, if they’ve removed them from the market for the rest of the hoi polloi, but Nancy Pelosi gets them, or President Biden should get the monoclonals, then we’ve got a real, real problem that there’s a different standard for Democrat politicians than the regular public.”

“I think they should leave them out there and should be developing new monoclonal antibodies,” he added. “But the thing is, is there still is some omicron. Just because most of the virus is the new variant doesn’t mean that the monoclonal antibodies may not work against the residual omicron, but also might have some carryover effect to this variant as well. I think it’s premature to remove them from the market, but that’s what happens when you centralize all the medical decision-making in Washington, which is a terrible mistake.”

Cell-Cultured Chicken Meat Goes Live In Singapore

In a world’s first, a hawker in Singapore recently offered a cell-cultured chicken meal at an affordable price of $4.

And diners said the meat tasted “just like real chicken”.

Cultured meat is made from growing animal cells in a bioreactor – similar to the vats used in brewing beer – instead of slaughtering actual animals.

The slices of lab-grown chicken were served alongside a hearty portion of white rice drenched in curry, together with eggplant and cai xin, a Chinese flowering cabbage, and a bottle of iced lemon tea at Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice in Tiong Bahru.

The hawker stall, which has been open since 1946, partnered Eat Just’s Good Meat, a Californian start-up dedicated to the production of alternative proteins, to serve up cultured chicken in an everyday setting.

The meal was offered from Feb 26 to March 1 to a limited number of diners who made bookings months in advance.

During the run, Good Meat subsidised the cost of its chicken bites so that the whole meal could be offered to consumers at $4 each.

Barber Mervyn Hi, 33, said he could not tell the difference between the cultivated meat served and regular meat from slaughtered chickens.

Mr Hi, who only found out from his friend that he was eating lab-grown chicken on his second bite, said: “The meat tastes just like normal chicken. There is no taste of artificial flavouring in the meat at all.”

But he said the decision to give up regular chicken for lab-grown meat would depend on its eventual cost, citing the price point of McDonald’s nuggets as the one to beat.

The barber said: “If it were as affordable as McDonald’s nuggets, the choice of cultured chicken would be easy because I can continue my meat-eating lifestyle while avoiding contributing to the slaughter of chickens.”

Mr Loo Kia Chee, the 62-year-old owner of the Hainanese curry rice stall, said: “This cell-cultured meat is a big step forward for humanity’s food-related needs and is more environmentally friendly while also being ethical.”

“As it is a noble cause, I don’t mind supporting it.”

Good Meat will collaborate with hawkers in Singapore to promote its chicken meat.

China Insiders Steal Billions From US Investors

China’s corporate insiders are cheating small American investors of billions of dollars through advance information that enables lucrative trades just before the stock price falls.

The total losses that insiders of Chinese companies listed on American exchanges have avoided by selling prior to price drops are at least $10 billion between 2016 and the middle of 2021, according to a new study of their security filings.

Chinese company shares fell an average of 21 percent a year after the Chinese company insiders sold large quantities of stock, compared to a 2 percent rise after insiders from American companies sold. Given inflation, that American number zeros out.

The Alibaba Case

The Wall Street Journal covered the study and used Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. as an example. In October 2020, “Alibaba’s payments affiliate, Ant Group Co., was preparing for its initial public offering, a move that would have likely increased the value of Alibaba’s one-third stake,” according to the Journal.

But Alibaba’s founder and CEO, Jack Ma, publicly criticized China’s financial regulators, who canceled the listing. Instead of rising, which the market predicted, Alibaba shares fell 8 percent on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

One day prior to Ma’s announcement, Sky Scraper Enterprises Ltd. sold approximately $150 million worth of Alibaba stock. An Alibaba insider controls Sky Scraper, but nobody knows his or her identity.

Whoever controls Sky Scraper, according to the Journal, which cited the Financial Times, “was one of the company’s best-paid executives in recent years and had been granted huge swaths of stock as compensation.”

This unknown Alibaba executive avoided losses totaling hundreds of millions of dollars through what appears to be insider trading. American and other investors who got caught on their back feet—because they couldn’t know the inside information no matter how much research they did—apparently got cheated.

The SEC, Big Banks, and China Collude Against Small Investors

The researchers—Robert Jackson, Bradford Lynch, and Daniel Taylor—point out that U.S. securities law actually advantages and enables China’s insiders relative to those in the United States.

“Executives and other major shareholders at American companies have to disclose their trades within two days in a filing that is posted on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s website and freely available to investors,” according to the Journal.

That deters bad behavior because American insiders do not want to appear to have acted on inside information. They don’t want to signal other market participants to sell the stock and, thus, decrease its value.

Strange cloud formations over Alaska spark wild conspiracy theories

A cloud of mystery fueled social media conspiracy theories near Lazy Mountain, Alaska, Thursday.

Meteor, Russian missile, plane crash and UFO were among the explanations for a ghoulish towering sliver of a cloud with finger-like trails.

A rescue team sent to search for a crash on Lazy Mountain found nothing suspicious, Alaska State Troopers reported.

“Not sure what but it looked cool,” Heather Isackson wrote on Facebook.

“Further investigation revealed that a large commercial jet was flying in that area around the time that the photos and video were taken. The aircraft was contacted and reported normal flight operations on its way to JFK airport in New York,” Alaska State Troopers wrote on Facebook.

“Troopers believe that the photos and videos showed a contrail from the commercial jet combined with the rising sun which together caused the unique atmospheric sight. We greatly appreciate the numerous Alaskans that reported the suspicious sight this morning to law enforcement,” they added.
