Celebrity surgeon Dr. Oz seeks to be first Muslim elected to the US Senate

Besides Sufism, the mystical Islamic sect, Oz's spiritual practices include transcendental meditation and elements of his wife's Swedenborgian tradition.

(RNS) ā€” Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity surgeon and host of ā€œThe Dr. Oz Show,ā€ has launched a campaign for Pennsylvaniaā€™s U.S. Senate seat now held by Pat Toomey, who is retiring. If Oz wins the Republican nomination, he will be the first Muslim to be nominated for a Senate seat by a major American political party.

The son of Turkish immigrants, Oz, 61, was a widely known cardiothoracic surgeon and Columbia University professor of medicine before rising to national prominence on television, initially as a frequent guest on Oprah Winfreyā€™s talk show before debuting his own syndicated show in 2009.

Ozā€™s faith is perhaps little known to the millions of viewers of his show but his role as one of the most prominent Muslims in American life has not gone unnoticed. He is one of roughly 40 Americans included in the 2022 edition of the Worldā€™s 500 Most Influential Muslims, an annual list put out by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, a Jordanian think tank.

==Mastriano and McSwain Tie for First Place in Pa. Governorā€™s Straw Poll, Barnette Tops Senate Race=

U.S. Senate candidate Kathy Barnette took first place in a recent Pennsylvania straw poll over other Republican candidates, including Mehmet Oz and David McCormick.

The poll, taken at the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference held March 31 to April 2, 2022, in Harrisburg, provided a glimpse of conservative voter preferences ahead of the stateā€™s May 17 primary.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano and Bill McSwain, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, tied for first place in the poll for governor.

Lowman Henry, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Leadership Councilā€”which runs the conferenceā€”said this is the first time since 1958 that Pennsylvania has had an open seat for both governor and the U.S. Senate in the same year.

There were 785 people at the PLC conference, the second-largest attendance in its 31-year history. Henry said he believes interest in the governorā€™s race is behind the strong turnout.

ā€œUntil 2020 happened, not a lot of people really understood the importance of who the governor was. I think the average person thought, ā€˜OK, we have a governor. Whatever,'ā€ Henry told The Epoch Times. ā€œBut 2020, with all the draconian shutdowns we had and the way [Gov.] Tom Wolf acted as a dictator and autocrat through that whole thing, I think that that drove home to a lot of people that, who the governor is mattersā€”sometimes even more than who the president isā€”to our daily lives.

ā€œThis was the first time that state government ever took away peopleā€™s liberties on a grand scale, and so I think this year, especially with an open seat for governor, people are really paying attention to who the governor is going to be,ā€ he said.

Candidate Poll Results

Attendees were able to see interactions between candidates during policy forums, including all Republican gubernatorial candidates and all but one Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, David McCormick, who did not attend or participate.

Barnette, a military veteran and conservative commentator who worked in corporate finance, earned 127 votes in the straw poll for a solid lead over any of the other candidates.

ā€œI think itā€™s reflective of what Iā€™m seeing on the ground,ā€ Barnette told The Epoch Times. ā€œI believe the media and national interests are trying to steer Pennsylvania in two directions, and they are towards Oz and McCormick. Yet the people in Pennsylvania have shown they reject them. Theyā€™ve spent well over $40 million and they have gotten very little traction. I believe this poll is reflective of what Iā€™m seeing as I travel about 1,500 miles a week.
