I have developed a healthy respect for snakes. They are important to the ecological system. I have Black Snakes ( Mr. & Mrs. Racey, Racers) that live in a railroad tie retaining wall I have in the backyard and they pretty much mind their own business. A snake no more wants to be around you than you want to be around it. Walked by the front door inside the house one night and looked out onto the sidewalk and saw something sitting there. Went out to inspect it and it was a snake. At first I thought it was poisonous but upon closer inspection the head didn't check out and neither did the markings. Turned out to be a young Rat Snake. She slithered up a cypress tree next to the house and I took a picture of her. She was beautiful. Just a little Rat Snake. I left her alone and went back in. Always on the lookout for these creatures as I have a Golden Retriever and he would try to play with the damn things.
