German president in Warsaw for talks with Poland's President Duda

 

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Warsaw on Tuesday for a one-day visit to the Polish capital to hold talks with President Andrzej Duda. The talks were to centre on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has drawn strong condemnation and offers of support to Ukraine from Poland in particular. Steinmeier was accompanied by his wife, Elke Büdenbender. Their original visit, planned for the end of last month, was postponed after Büdenbender became infected with the coronavirus. Steinmeier's office indicated before the trip that it should be seen as a signal from Germany and Poland of their backing for Ukraine. The visit was intended to demonstrate joint support for freedom, democracy and the rule of law, it said.

 

Steinmeier is also to pay tribute to Poland's acceptance of refugees who are flooding across its southern border with Ukraine. Almost 2.7 million people fleeing the war have entered the country, according to the Polish authorities.

 

Steinmeier is also due to visit a volunteer centre helping to coordinate the aid workers.

It has left for Int'l trips from JBA as AF1 but never for a CONUS only trip
