New York lieutenant governor charged with bribery, pleads not guilty

New York's lieutenant governor was charged on Tuesday with bribery and fraud for allegedly directing state funds to a group controlled by a real estate developer who was also a campaign donor, U.S. prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Brian Benjamin, a Democrat appointed as the state's No. 2 official by Governor Kathy Hochul last August, pleaded not guilty at a hearing in Manhattan federal court to the charges in a five-count indictment.

Prosecutors said Benjamin directed a $50,000 state grant to the developer's organization while serving as a state senator in 2019.

The developer then sent Benjamin's campaign for state Senate thousands of dollars through several checks in the names of the developer's relatives and a limited liability company, according to the indictment, which did not identify either the developer or the organization that the developer controlled.

Prosecutors said the developer also raised money for Benjamin's unsuccessful 2021 run to become New York City's comptroller.

Benjamin, who surrendered to authorities on Tuesday morning, faces charges including bribery, wire fraud and falsification of records.

Hochul, also a Democrat, had preceded Benjamin as lieutenant governor, serving under former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

She took office last year following an inquiry that found Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women.

The charges against Benjamin could complicate Hochul's re-election bid in November.

She faces challenges from New York City Comptroller Jumaane Williams and Long Island U.S. Congressman Tom Suozzi for Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

3 former police officers charged in George Floyd's death reject plea deal

Three former Minneapolis police officers set to stand trial on state charges in George Floyd's death have rejected a plea deal with prosecutors, the Minnesota attorney general's office told CNN.

ou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane face a state trial currently slated for mid-June on charges of aiding and abetting over their role in the fatal restraint of Floyd on a Minneapolis street in May 2020. They have pleaded not guilty.

The officers were offered the plea deals on March 22, the attorney general's office said. That was just a few weeks after they were found guilty in federal court of violating Floyd's civil rights.

The attorney general's office would not provide details of what the proposed plea deals entailed. Terms of the offer are expected to be made public when the trio's state trial begins.

CNN has reached out to the lawyers for all three former officers. Tom Plunkett, attorney for Kueng, declined to share details on why the offer was rejected. CNN has not heard back from attorneys for the other two former officers.

All three remain free on bail and have yet to be sentenced for their conviction in federal court in late February.

NY lieutenant governor arrested in campaign donation scheme

New York Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin was arrested Tuesday in a federal corruption investigation, creating a political crisis for Gov. Kathy Hochul seven months after she selected Benjamin as a partner to make a fresh start in an office already rocked by scandal.

Benjamin, a Democrat, was accused in an indictment of participating in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a real estate developer in exchange for Benjamin’s agreement to use his influence as a state senator to get a $50,000 grant of state funds for a nonprofit organization the developer controlled.

Facing charges including bribery, fraud, conspiracy and falsification of records, Benjamin pleaded not guilty Tuesday at an initial appearance in Manhattan federal court. He was released and bail was set at $250,000.

Two lawyers representing Benjamin did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Hochul in September plucked Benjamin, then a state lawmaker, to serve as second-in-command when she became governor, taking over for Democrat Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo resigned amid allegations he sexually harassed 11 women, which he denied.

Hochul, also a Democrat, was Cuomo's lieutenant governor. She is now running for governor in this year's election, with Benjamin as a running mate.

Hochul, who appeared at a New York City news conference Tuesday regarding a shooting on the subway, said she would speak about Benjamin later in the day.

Prominent Putin critic arrested in Moscow

ladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian journalist and outspoken critic of the Kremlin, was arrested on Monday in Moscow on charges of failing to obey police orders, his lawyer told the independent Russian news outlet Sota.

He faces up to 15 days in jail or a small fine, the Guardian reported. It is unclear whether Kara-Murza's arrest is linked to his vocal opposition to the invasion of Ukraine, but his detainment comes at a time when the Kremlin is increasing arrests of journalists and anti-war activists.

"[I]t seems to me that they are very annoyed by his behavior and actions with regard to the taking up of sanctions against Russia and for other reasons," Aleksander Podrabinek, a prominent Russian human rights activist and supporter of Kara-Murza told Sota about the arrest. "But mostly I think they are outraged by his courage."

Kara-Murza has previously said he was poisoned on two separate occasions for his critiques of Putin, once which almost killed him due to acute kidney failure and the second left him in a medically induced coma for several days.

I got no idea what a holding cell looks like, but if I were them I certainly wouldn't put him in a room where there's easy access to power outlets.

Cause you know, electrocution.
