Nearly forty years ago Fayrer discovered that cobra venom which had been treated with potassium permanganate was harmless.

Cobra venom can be completely neutralized with treated with potassium permanganate outside of the body. However, it is not effective treatment once the bite has happened to the human body. This has been known for at least 40 years.
