March 30, 2001

 

Oct. 26, 1948 - A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress crashed near Haystack Gate, about 30 miles northwest of Aspen. The four crew members parachuted to safety.

 

Feb. 15, 1983 - A Cessna 340 crashed east of Aspen. Four people died.

 

March 30, 1983 - A Stinson 108-2 crashed at Sardy Field. There was one minor injury.

 

Dec. 23, 1983 - A Cessna 421 crash-landed short of Sardy Field. There was one minor injury.

 

July 15, 1984 - A World War II-era P-51 doing aerobatic maneuvers crashed near the Garfield-Pitkin county line. Two people were killed.

 

Sept. 17, 1984 - A Cessna 172 crashed near Independence Pass, which is about 17 miles southeast of Aspen. There were two serious injuries.

 

March 30, 1985 - A Cessna 402 crashed at Sardy Field. No one was injured.

 

July 12, 1985 - A Piper PA-28 crashed near Aspen. One person died and one was injured.

 

Oct. 6, 1985 - A Cessna 177 crashed near Independence Pass. Two people suffered serious injuries.

 

Oct. 29, 1988 - A Canada Air Challenger owned by entertainer Merv Griffin and carrying actress Sally Field and three members of her family aborted its takeoff at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport and slammed into three parked airplanes. Three crew members suffered minor injuries.

 

April 27, 1990 - A Piper Cherokee crashed near Lonesome Lake west of Leadville. Six people, including four members of the Sweet Adelines singing group from Salt Lake City, died.

 

March 11, 1998 - A United Express commuter jet with 77 passengers and a crew of four on board slid off the end of the runway at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport. There were no injuries.

 

Aug. 16, 1999 - A Piper 32 crashed just after takeoff from Aspen's airport. Three people suffered minor injuries.

 

July 8, 2000 - A Cessna 195 crashed in a wooded area near Aspen. Three members of a Jefferson County family were killed.
