BPPs are small proline-rich hypotensive peptides consisting of 5–14 amino acid residues found in snake venom glands. Studies have also reported their presence in the brain, as part of C-type natriuretic peptide. These small peptides are well-known natural inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).

ACE2 is a key regulator of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS). SARS-CoV-2 causes ACE/ACE2 balance disruption and RAAS activation, which leads ultimately to COVID-19 progression, especially in patients with comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.
