ICYMI: “Poll: Paxton Establishes Wide Lead in AG Runoff”

Truth Social: 108132803920461669Poll: Paxton Establishes Wide Lead in AG Runoff

Local News, Election Coverage

Paxton and Bush/Photos by Campaigns

Incumbent Republican Ken Paxton has established a large lead over Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush in the upcoming runoff for attorney general, according to a new poll released this week.

According to a new poll from the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation, Paxton is leading the race for attorney general with 65 percent of support among “likely” voters, against Bush’s 23 percent. When the survey respondents are filtered to just be “almost certain voters,” Paxton’s lead grows to 71 percent versus 20 percent for Bush.

The poll also found Democratic voters to have a favorite in their upcoming attorney general runoff, with Rochelle Garza leading Joe Jaworski among both “likely” and “almost certain” voters. Garza leads both categories, 46-31 percent and 51-30 percent, respectively.

In a head-to-head general election matchup among “likely” voters, the poll also found Paxton to be the strongest candidate against either Garza or Jaworski. Against Garza, Paxton leads, 48-42 percent, while he also leads Jaworski, 48-41 percent. Against Bush, however, voters showed split support for the Land Commissioner and Garza, with both candidates receiving 39 percent of support. Against Jaworski, Bush trails by one point, 38-39 percent.

Presumptive Libertarian nominee Mark Ash’s performance was also stronger in both matchups with Bush, receiving 7 percent in the Bush-Garza matchup, and 8 percent in the Bush-Jaworski matchup. Against Paxton, Ash received 3 percent in both matchups against the Democratic candidates.

The poll also found Gov. Greg Abbott leading the race for Texas governor among “likely” voters. Among this group of respondents, Abbott received 50 percent of support, while Democrat Beto O’Rourke received 42 percent, Libertarian Mark Tippetts received 2 percent, and Green Delilah Barrios received 1 percent.

The runoff elections will be decided on Tuesday, May 24.

ICYMI: “Letitia James takes eye off the ball and other commentary”

Truth Social: 108132135943019056

Letitia James takes eye off the ball and other commentary

Crime watch: Tish James Takes Eye off Ball

“New Yorkers are currently suffering through an epidemic of violent crime … and what is state Attorney General Letitia James doing about it?” asks AJ Caschetta at National Review. “Coming to the defense of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in its efforts to stop its own members from talking to reporters about the potentially illegal activities of the group’s leaders.” James calls simple investigative journalism into CAIR’s activities “infiltration,” treating the journalists in question like “a government entity rather than an investigative news organization.” And while “subway-pushers, gun-toting teenagers … and carjacking” plague New York, “James has used her office and political clout to make investigative reporters stop investigating and reporting while sticking up for a group with intimate ties to Hamas. Excelsior!”

Foreign desk: Putin’s Energy Grab

“There is more than one way to dominate Ukraine,” warns David Knight Legg at The Wall Street Journal. Conventional wisdom says Vladimir Putin “has foolishly overreached,” but “under cover of the wider conflict,” he’s “taking full control of Ukraine’s vast, extremely valuable energy assets and intends to integrate them into the Russian supply chain on which Europe now depends.” Indeed, “this war is, or will default to, an energy heist.” If Putin keeps the territory he’s grabbed, he’ll “control all of Ukraine’s offshore oil, its critical ports on the Azov Sea, the Kerch Strait, 80% of the Black Sea coastline and all critical energy-processing and shipping infrastructure.”

Economist: Nobel Laureates Owe Us an Apology

Back when Congress was considering President Biden’s Build Back Better bill, recalls Carl Schramm at The Hill, Joseph Stiglitz and 16 other Nobel laureate economists assured us that all the new money being poured into the economy posed no threat of inflation. Their “presumed authority was used to give credence to the president’s continuously twisting storyline on inflation — that it was ‘transitory,’ good for the economy, a ‘high-class problem,’ Putin’s fault for invading Ukraine,” or the greed of oil and food companies. Surely they knew such excuses are “bogus” and inflation is a “tax” that falls most heavily on the poor. Yet “don’t expect a mea culpa” from Stiglitz & Co. any time soon: Economists know they “can be wrong, really wrong, and never pay a price.”

Libertarian: Princeton’s Cancel-Culture Sellout

“Last December, Princeton University was slated to host an exhibition of 19th-century Jewish American artwork provided by Leonard Milberg,” notes Reason’s Robby Soave. But school officials objected to “the inclusion of artwork by two 19th-century Jewish Americans who had served as soldiers in the Confederate army during the Civil War,” and Milberg promptly pulled out. Why? Because it would have been impossible “to have an accurate show about 19th-century Jewish American art” without those artists. Yet “history is filled with flawed people who nevertheless made important contributions to literature, art, science and philosophy.” And the art had nothing to do with the Confederacy, but the university surrendered to its vice provost for “institutional equity and diversity” anyway, and “a vital learning moment was lost.”

Border beat: Joe’s Mess Sure Looks Intentional

“It has become clear over the past 14 months that the Biden administration has no interest in securing the border,” Chad Wolfe charges at the Washington Examiner. Its ending of Title 42 guarantees “an additional surge of illegal immigrants” after a year that “saw the highest number of illegal apprehensions on record.” And it’s “committed millions in taxpayer dollars to provide legal representation for migrants challenging their removal from the U.S.” The prez’s new budget plan “commits $4.5 billion in legal defense for illegal immigrants over the next 10 years.” And a recent shift in who judges asylum claims “will likely result in greater numbers of illegal immigrants with dubious claims of asylum being ushered into the U.S.” Sure looks like “chaos” by “deliberate design.”

ICYMI: “Tech exec was warned dirt-digging effort on Trump ‘will not fly,’ Durham claims”

Truth Social: 108132131449590182

Tech exec was warned dirt-digging effort on Trump ‘will not fly,’ Durham claims

A researcher tasked by tech executive Rodney Joffe with mining internet data to create a “narrative” of Trump-Russia collusion expressed doubt about the Hillary Clinton campaign project in an August 2016 email cited by Special Counsel John Durham — writing at one point, “This will not fly,” according to court documents.

The message emerged in an explosive motion filed late Monday, in which Durham alleged that Joffe, Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, and attorney Michael Sussmann took part in a “joint venture” to gather and spread damaging information about then-Republican nominee Donald Trump.

In the filing, Durham argued that communications between Joffe and online sleuths should be admitted as evidence in Sussmann’s upcoming trial on a charge of lying to the FBI about his work for the Clinton campaign while suggesting that the Trump Organization had ties to a Russian bank.

According to prosecutors, Joffe told his subordinates that “VIPs” — a phrase Durham says refers to Sussmann, Clinton campaign general counsel Marc Elias, and the campaign itself — were “looking for a true story that could be used as the basis for closer examination.”

“Trump has claimed he and his company have had NO dealings with .ru [web domains] other than the failed Casino, and the Miss universe [sic] pageant,” Joffe allegedly wrote. “He claims absolutely NO interaction with any financial institutions. So any potential like that would be jackpot.”

Tech executive Rodney JoffeTech executive Rodney Joffe allegedly said that Donald Trump “had NO dealings with” Russian websites, according to John Durham’s cited emails.Twitter

A couple of days later, the researcher responded to Joffe that his ask was all but impossible.

“[Y]ou do realize that we will have to expose every trick we have in our bag to even make a very weak association?” wrote the person, identified only as Researcher-1. ” … [U]nless we get … traffic collected at critical points between suspect organizations, we cannot technically make any claims that would fly public scrutiny.”

“In this case we will have not only the Trump folks trying to sho[o]t this down, but all the privacy freaks trying to come up with a crazy conspiracy theory on how we obtain the data,” the researcher added. “Sorry to say this, we are nowhere close coming with a plan to attack this problem that will fly in the public domain. The only thing that drive us at this point is that we just do not like [Trump]. This will not fly in eyes of public scrutiny. Folks, I am afraid we have tunnel vision.”

Despite the skepticism, Joffe and Sussmann pressed on, eventually drafting a “white paper” of information claiming that Trump Organization computer servers were communicating with servers at Moscow-based Alfa-Bank.

John Durham accused Hillary Clinton’s campaign of steering a misinformation effort on Donald Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

Clinton 2016 campaign, lawyer, tech exec in ‘joint venture’ to smear Trump, Durham alleges

Sussmann turned over the white paper to then-FBI General Counsel James Baker on Sept. 19, 2016, after allegedly texting him that he had “time-sensitive (and sensitive)” information to discuss.

“I’m coming on my own – not on behalf of a client or company – want to help the Bureau,” Sussmann added in his message to Baker, which was reproduced in Durham’s filing.

In addition to the FBI, the special counsel alleges, the allegations about Trump and Alfa-Bank were shared with State Department personnel by Christopher Steele, the former British spy who authored the now-infamous dossier of allegations about the 45th president’s links with Russia. The firm that hired Steele on behalf of the Clinton campaign, Fusion GPS, also shared the allegations with at least one Department of Justice official, according to prosecutors.

Four days before Sussmann met with Baker, Joffe allegedly asked his researchers for feedback on the draft white paper of Alfa-Bank allegations.

“Please read as if you had no prior knowledge or involvement, and you were handed this document as a security expert … and were asked: ‘Is this plausible as an explanation?’” Joffe wrote in an email. “NOT to be able to say that this is, without doubt, fact, but to merely be plausible. Do NOT spend more than a short while on this (If you spend more than an hour you have failed the assignment). Hopefully less.”
