California Rep. Darrell Issa (R) told Fox News on Sunday that the GOP is in possession of Hunter Biden’s laptop, and is poring over the “treasure trove” of data within it. Meanwhile, party leaders are already laying plans to investigate the contents of the laptop – which the White House initially wrote off as “Russian disinformation” – if they return to power in November.
“It’s gotta be followed all the way back to the big guy,” Issa said, referring to an email from the laptop that described a business deal in China where “the big guy,” apparently a reference to Joe Biden, would stand to gain 10%.
“We’re going to need a special prosecutor, but in the meantime we’re investigating it,” he continued. “We have the laptop, and the laptop is a treasure trove of obviousness.”
Issa said that the computer contains evidence of direct communication between Joe and Hunter Biden while the former was serving as vice president, evidence that Joe Biden was making “sure his business deals went forward,” including in Russia and China, and evidence of Hunter’s drug use that could have made the VP’s son vulnerable to blackmail by foreign intelligence agencies.
Joe Biden has repeatedly denied communicating with his son about his overseas business ventures.
The contents of the laptop were first reported on by the New York Post before the 2020 US presidential election, and at the time were dismissed by the Biden campaign and a number of US intelligence figures and media outlets as part of a “Russian disinformation” operation aimed at getting Donald Trump re-elected. Major social media companies, including Twitter and Facebook, forbade the sharing of reports on the laptop.
However, the authenticity of the laptop, which Hunter allegedly abandoned in a Delaware repair shop, has since been independently verified, and the New York Times and Washington Post now admit that its contents are genuine.
Emails from the laptop detail Hunter Biden’s involvement in numerous foreign business ventures, including a highly-paid stint on the board of a Ukrainian energy firm, multimillion-dollar deals in China that hinged on his introducing partners to his father, and an alleged scheme to arrange funding for a Pentagon contractor to study hazardous biological agents in Ukraine. Photographs reportedly sourced from the laptop also detail Hunter’s sexual proclivities and drug use.
The Department of Justice is currently probing Hunter’s overseas dealings, reportedly focusing on the Biden family’s ties to Chinese energy executives. However, Republicans want to go further.
House Republican Conference chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik (New York) promised earlier this month that should the GOP retake the House in November’s midterm elections, “we will serve as a check on the failed Biden administration, and that starts with subpoenaing Hunter Biden.”
“The House Oversight Committee is going to be all over Hunter Biden,” Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) told Politico. “We’re going to focus on Hunter Biden not for political reasons, but because we feel he’s a national security threat.”

Russia responds to EU’s ‘bankruptcy’ predictions

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned the “Brussels masochists” that they will have to change their rhetoric if the Russian debt default they predict ends up turning into the bankruptcy – both moral and material – of the European Union.
Medvedev, who is currently deputy chairman of the national Security Council, took to Telegram to respond to remarks by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Speaking to the Bild newspaper earlier on Sunday, she said that “Russia's state bankruptcy is only a matter of time,” referring to the hard-hitting Western economic sanctions imposed on Moscow over its offensive in Ukraine.
Noting that “auntie Ursula” has been talking a lot about an imminent Russian default, Medvedev suggested that it was something the EU politicians “secretly dreamed about at night.”
“This is the deep strategy of the European Union, the secret intention of the masochists from Brussels and their partners in games from across the ocean [the US],” Medvedev wrote in a post.
The former president warned the EU leaders that any Russian default could turn into “both a moral and, quite possibly, material” default of the bloc itself.
“The financial system of the EU is not quite stable, people's confidence is falling. And it didn’t shake so much even in the memorable year of 2008, and back then it was very difficult,” he said, referring to the so called Great Financial Crash.
He sarcasticallyadvised the EU to expect “powerful gratitude” from their citizens for hyperinflation, “which could no longer be attributed to the wicked Russians,” for the lack of basic supplies in stores and for a new migration crisis, which, in Medvedev’s opinion, “will provoke a wave of violent crime worse than the Albanian one.”
“Then the chaps in Brussels will have to change their rhetoric,” he said, adding that otherwise, “smelly bonfires of tires” will appear on the streets of “well-maintained European cities.”
Since the launch of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, the EU has adopted five packages of financial sanctions against Moscow and is now considering a sixth. The restrictions cover various sectors of the Russian economy, from banking to coal exports. Meanwhile, hundreds of foreign companies have suspended or completely stopped their operations in Russia. Moscow considers these measures unlawful and unjustified and has been responding to them with counter-sanctions.

NASA may provoke alien invasion, scientists warn

Scientists at the UK’s Oxford University have reportedly sounded an alarm over plans by NASA to broadcast location data and other information into space, warning that the effort could have dangerous unintended consequences, including triggering an alien invasion.
At issue is the planned “Beacon in the Galaxy” (BITG), a broadcast of data by a NASA-led team of researchers with the aim of greeting “extraterrestrial intelligences.” The US space agency wants to beam the signal from the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope array in California and China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). It would include such information as the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System’s time-stamped position in the Milky Way, digitized images of humans and an invitation for extraterrestrials to respond.
Anders Sandberg, a senior researcher at Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute (FHI), argued that such a broadcast could be risky. In the unlikely event that an alien civilization receives the message, he said, the response might not be just a friendly greeting.
The search for alien life has a “giggle factor” around it, Sandberg told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper in an article published on Sunday. “Many people refuse to take anything related to it seriously, which is a shame because this is important stuff.”
Another FHI scientist at Oxford, Toby Ord, has suggested that there should be public discussion before sending signals to aliens. Even listening for incoming messages could be dangerous, he added, as they could be used to entrap Earthlings. “These dangers are small but poorly understood and not yet well managed,” he said.
Ord insistedthat there’s no scientific consensus on the ratio of peaceful to hostile civilizationsaround the galaxy. (because they are making it all up). “Given the downside could be much bigger than the upside, this doesn’t sound to me like a good situation in which to take active steps toward contact,” he said.
Weaker signals have been broadcast into space in the past using earlier technologies, such as the Arecibo message sent in 1974. Russian scientists did a series of such broadcasts, called Cosmic Calls, in 1999 and 2003. Sandberg theorized that “the poor aliens might already be getting various messages sent for all sorts of reasons.”
Scientists with the BITG group have speculated that an alien species that is sufficiently advanced to achieve communication through the cosmos would “very likely have attained high levels of cooperation amongst themselves and thus will know the importance of peace and collaboration.” Canadian futurist George Dvorsky dismissed that theory as an “old trope,” saying he can think of a “host of scenarios” in which extraterrestrials with malevolent tendencies continue to exist.

Supplying Ukraine with “more effective” weaponry amid the ongoing conflict with Russia is essential to avoid the supposedlooming “global famine,” German Agriculture Minister Cem Ozdemir has said. The official made the remarks in an interview published Sunday by the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.
“Russia’s war against Ukraine is increasingly turning out to be an attack on the international community,” the minister claimed.
That’s why it's so important that the West support Ukraine with more, more effective weapons – and Germany shouldn't be exempt from that.
Ozdemir also alleged that the Russian military has been deliberately targeting Ukrainian agriculture in the conflict that broke out in late February. He cited “alarming news” coming from the country yet did not elaborate on the source or exact nature of the allegations.
“We are receiving alarming news from Ukraine, where Russian troops are apparently also deliberately destroying agricultural infrastructure and supply chains,” Ozdemir stated.
The alleged attacks are a part of the “starvation strategy,” purportedly employed by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, the official went on. This “strategy” is set to take a heavy toll on the countries already experiencing issues with food security, in particular a number of African nations, Ozdemir claimed. The situation needs to be addressed globally, and the UN World Food and Agriculture Committee should play the central role in this, the official believes.
“Here we have to agree on fundamental, structural questions of agricultural and food policy worldwide,” he said.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has prompted fears of global grain shortages as wheat prices soared to multiple-year highs last month. Both Russia and Ukraine are major wheat suppliers, accounting for some 30% of global exports.
