Ukraine receives aircraft support from US allies
Pentagon says countries have helped boost Kiev’s air power ahead of new Russian offensive in Donbass region
The Pentagon said US allies have helped bolster Ukraine’s fleet of fighter aircraft by donating spare parts needed to make more of the jets operable as fighting with Russia heats up in the country’s Donbass region.
While Washington hasn’t been able to provide some of the Soviet-type weaponry that Kiev has requested, countries that have compatible gear in their inventories have stepped up to help, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday. In recent days, such aid has included fighter jet parts.
“They have received support to get some of their fixed-wing aircraft more operable again,” Kirby said. “Look, the proof’s in the pudding there. They right now have available to them more fixed-wing fighter aircraft than they did two weeks ago. That’s not by accident. That’s because other nations who have experience with those kinds of aircraft have been able to help them get more aircraft up and running.”
Kirby didn’t identify the countries involved in the parts shipments; nor did he disclose the number or type of jets that have been repaired and put back into service. The US and other NATO members have accelerated weapons shipments to Ukraine in recent weeks, citing alleged Russian attacks on civilians. Moscow has denied targeting civilians and accused Kiev of staging supposed war crimes to manipulate public opinion about the conflict.
Kirby said the aid being sent to Ukraine currently – such as artillery pieces, radar systems and coastal defense systems – are tailored to the battles that are expected in the Donbass. He added that Ukraine also has been given more tanks, though not directly from Washington.
“The kinds of tanks they know how to use are not the tanks that we have in our inventory, but other nations have provided some tanks,” Kirby said. “Some nations have provided spare parts, so that they can get their inoperable tanks operable again.”
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that he recommended to Biden last week that Western nations undertake a long-term buildup of Ukraine’s military forces. “I proposed that our long-term goal must be to strengthen and fortify Ukraine to the point where Russia would never dare to invade again,” he told UK lawmakers.

Netflix Loses 200,000 Subscribers, Expects to Lose Even More
For the first time in more than a decade, Netflix reported that it had lost subscribers in the previous quarter. The streaming giant lost over 200,000 subscribers in the period while the company expects to lose close to two million in the current quarter.
The unexpected loss in revenue led to a 25% plunge of the streaming giant’s stock price in after-hours trading on Tuesday.
In order to make up for the loss in subscribers, Netflix will reportedly be cracking down on password sharing. In a letter to shareholders, executives estimated that many households are using the service without paying for it, by signing in under accounts of its 221.6 million paying subscribers, and that they hope to “reaccelerate” revenue growth “through improvements to our service and more effective monetization of multi-household sharing.”
Netflix described cutting off password sharing as “a big opportunity” in the shareholder letter, stating that “these households are already watching Netflix and enjoying our service.”
According to MarketWatch, Netflix executives have already been testing methods that could curb account sharing. The company has not mentioned specifics, though their plan would likely involve IP banning. In March, the company said it started two new paid-sharing features, where current members have the choice of paying for additional households, in three markets in Latin America.
“While we won’t be able to monetize all of it right now, we believe it’s a large, short- to mid-term opportunity,” the company said. “As we work to monetize sharing, growth in ARM (average revenue per membership), revenue and viewing will become more important indicators of our success than membership growth.”
Price hikes are believed to have been a large driving factor in the company’s hemorrhaging subscriber count. Netflix recently increased its prices in the U.S. and Canada after upping them the year before as well.
Increased competition is also thought to be cutting into the company’s revenue. Netflix once held a monopoly on mail-in DVD rentals, and more or less held one on streaming in the early 2010’s. This is not the case anymore, however, as Netflix now has numerous big-name competitors in Amazon, NBC and Disney, to name a few.

US, Britain, Canada Pledge Artillery for Ukraine
The leaders of the United States, Britain and Canada pledged on Tuesday to send more artillery weaponry to Ukraine in the face of an all-out Russian assault on that country’s East.
U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acted after they and other allied leaders took part in a secure video call as the Russian invasion reached a new phase.
Asked by reporters during a visit to New Hampshire if the United States would be sending more artillery to Ukraine, Biden replied yes.
In London, Johnson told lawmakers: “This will become an artillery conflict, they need support with more artillery, that is what we will be giving them … in addition to many other forms of support.”
Trudeau said Canada would be sending heavy artillery and promised to provide more details.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Air Force One the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to providing Ukraine security and economic and humanitarian assistance.
“We will continue to provide them more ammunition, as we will provide them more military assistance,” Psaki said. She said the United States was preparing another round of sanctions to impose on Moscow.

DeSantis Signs Bill to Reform Higher Education
PUNTA GORDA, Fla.–Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a higher education reform bill on April 19 to hold faculty accountable, and ensure transparency with the curriculum.
Under the new law, which takes effect July 1, tenured faculty will be reviewed every five years by a Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida, which will consider such things as accomplishments, productivity, performance metrics. and compensation.
“Transparency and accountability is absolutely key,” DeSantis said as he signed the bill in The Villages. “We’re going to make sure that our institutions of higher education are committed to excellence, not ideology – we’re going to be even better than we have been, and we’ve been pretty doggone good over the last many years.”
The Republican governor told a boisterous crowd that Florida’s higher education institutions were ranked No. 1 in U.S. News and World Report for the last five years, but, with these reforms, he wanted to make it even better.
Senate Bill 7044 addresses three main issues that DeSantis’s administration sees as “eroding higher education,” he said. Accreditation, transparency in course descriptions, tenure reforms and allowing grandchildren of Florida residents in-state tuition.
“It’s all about trying to make these institutions more in line with what the state’s priorities are and, frankly, the priorities of the parents throughout the state of Florida,” the governor said.
