Russia demoted as cause of US inflationkek

The US president still blames Russia for high prices, but now says the number-one reason is actually the Covid-19 pandemic

US President Joe Biden admitted on Tuesday that Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns were the primary cause of runaway inflation, but still blamed his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, for high gas prices at home. Biden’s domestic popularity has suffered amid the worst inflation since 1981.

The White House has tried to blame the inflation on Russia’s military operation in Ukraine for the past six weeks, insisting on the phrase “Putin price hike” to describe the skyrocketing prices at the pump. Biden dutifully repeated the talking point in a speech in New Hampshire on Tuesday, but then “demoted” Russia as the principal culprit.

There were “two reasons” for the high prices, Biden said. “The first was Covid. Because of the pandemic, we had disruptions in our supply of important materials, so prices went up.” He followed that up by attempting to explain the supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic lockdowns back in 2020.

“And the second big reason for inflation is Vladimir Putin, not a joke,” he then said. “Last month, about 70% of the increase in inflation was the consequence of Putin’s price hike because of the impact of gas and energy prices.”

The White House has been using the “Putin price hike” talking point since banning the import of Russian oil and gas to the US on March 8. The Russian president responded by saying Moscow had “absolutely nothing to do with” rising US gas prices, as Russia’s exports to the US were “negligible” to begin with.

“They just hide behind these decisions in order to deceive once again their own population,” Putin said last month. (No one here is deceived, we know)

The latest polls suggest most Americans agree. Biden’s approval rating is only at 33% according to last week’s numbers by Quinnipiac, a pollster traditionally friendly to the Democrats. While Republicans and independent voters overwhelmingly blame Biden’s economic policies for the high gas prices, Democrats are evenly split between blaming Russia and believing greedy oil companies are price gouging.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, March saw the highest spike in inflation since 1981, with gas prices rising 18% from the previous month and 48% from the same time last year.

Meanwhile, it has been estimated thatnearly 80% of all US dollars in existence have been printed since January 2020, when Biden took office.

UK PM weaves Ukraine military aid into apology for his misconduct

Boris Johnson pivots from lamenting his breach of Covid-19 rules to calling for increased aid to help Kiev repel Russian offensive

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing political pushback after using the occasion of his apology to Parliament for violating Covid-19 lockdown rules to campaign for increased military aid to Ukraine.

Speaking at the House of Commons on Tuesday, Johnson briefly apologized for holding a June 2020 birthday party when the rest of Britons were locked down – a violation that he blamed on his ignorance of the pandemic rules – then quickly transitioned by linking his regret over the incident to the Ukraine crisis. He called for boosting aid to help Kiev repel the offensive ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February.

“It is precisely because I know that so many people are angry and disappointed that I feel an even greater sense of obligation to deliver on the priorities of the British people and to respond in the best traditions of our country to Putin’s barbaric onslaught against Ukraine,” the PM said.

(The countries of the world have demented and sick leaders, that pander lies as apologies)

Johnson noted that he was the first G7 leader to visit Kiev since the conflict began, recounting a four-hour visit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on April 9, and said he briefed US President Joe Biden on the trip last week. He called for a long-term military buildup of the former Soviet republic in the call with his American counterpart.

“I proposed that our long-term goal must be to strengthen and fortify Ukraine to the point where Russia would never dare to invade again,” Johnson said he told Biden.

Johnson still faces a police investigation of the so-called Partygate scandal. He’s already been fined for the rules breach. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer called Tuesday’s apology by the PM “a joke” and “mealy mouthed.” MP Mark Harper, formerly chief whip in Parliament for Johnson’s Conservative Party, reacted by issuing a letter of no confidence.

“I strongly support the government’s actions in standing up to Putin’s aggression and helping Ukraine to defend itself and our values,” Harper told his fellow MPs. “It’s exactly at times like this that our country needs a prime minister who exemplifies those values. I regret to say that we have a prime minister who broke the laws that he told the country they have to follow, hasn’t been straightforward about it, and is now going to ask the decent men and women on these benches to defend what I think is indefensible.”

I’m very sorry to have to say this, but I no longer think he is worthy of the great office that he holds.

Johnson brushed off the rebuke, saying the government must now “get on with the priorities of the British people.” He argued that the urgency to accelerate weapons shipments to Ukraine is great because Russian forces have regrouped for a new offensive in Ukraine’s Donbass region. The PM took credit for helping Ukraine successfully defend its capital against Russian attackers.

Our Ukrainian friends are fighting for the life of their nation, and they achieved the greatest feat of arms of the 21st century by repelling the Russian assault on Kiev,” Johnson said. “Putin arrogantly assumed that he would capture Kiev in a matter of days, and now the blackened carcasses of his tanks and heavy armor litter the approaches to the capital on both banks of the Dnieper and are smoldering monuments to his failure.”

Britain will give more artillery weapons to Ukraine for the new phase of the conflict, Johnson said. “This will become an artillery conflict. They need support with more artillery. That is what we will be giving them . . . in addition to many other forms of support.”

(Johnson said at the end of the speech, and fuck you UK citizens for expecting support from yhe government. Youre all lazy fuckers, be like Ukrainians, die for your country already! And everyone at the end of BoJo’s speech that were in attendance, clapped and cheered, for such a bold statement of patriotism! The end.)

Germany explains way to send more of its arms to Ukraine

The Bundeswehr has no weapons to spare, but Berlin will pay defense industry to arm Ukraine, says Chancellor Scholz

(This is hysterical, Germany won’t even pay NATO to defend their country but they’ll pay defense contractors to arm Ukraine. Must be in the contract with Russia to keep the oil/gas flowing they can’t directly give arms)

The government in Berlin will pay the German military-industrial complex to produce weapons for Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday after talks with G7 members. He added that the Bundeswehr has no weapons left to spare for Kiev from its own stockpiles, and will need a large-scale rearmament program.

“We initially supplied Ukraine with weapons from our stocks. Now we must recognize that our capabilities have reached their limits,” Scholz said. “Therefore, we are creating a special fund so that our army, after many years of savings, will finally be well-armed, and we are investing on a large scale in the Bundeswehr’s capabilities.”

Germany is in full agreement with the EU and NATO allies that Russia should not win the war, Scholz said after a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden and the leaders of the EU and G7. To continue arming Kiev, Berlin will allow Ukraine to buy the weapons it needs from German and other Western military manufacturers, for example artillery and other heavy armaments, Scholz said.

“We will provide the money necessary for the purchase,” Scholz said. “Our common goal is to continue to arm the Ukrainian military so that it can continue to defend itself against [Russian] attack.”

The US recently announced a $800 million package of weapons for Kiev, including 200 aging armored personnel carriers and 18 towed howitzers. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government has been asking for heavy weapons and vehicles.

Berlin is trying to follow Washington’s lead, amid fears of being seen as a party to the conflict. Economy minister Robert Habeck has said Germany had the responsibility “to not itself become a target” of Russia, which might happen if it sent tanks or fighter jets to Ukraine.

Former foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel wrote in Der Spiegel on Sunday that Germany could only supply heavy weapons “in coordination with the US,”which was being careful not to cross the line of “active participation” in the war with Russia.

However, Justice minister Marco Buschmann has argued that providing “defensive” weapons to Kiev should be fine because Ukraine is merely defending itself from Russian attack.

Scholz has so far ruled out deliveries of German tanks and armored vehicles to Kiev, arguing that Ukraine would be better served by old Soviet designs operated by new NATO allies in Eastern Europe. Slovakia notably sent a battery of its S-300 air defense missiles to Ukraine earlier this month, but it was “obliterated” by a Russian strike without ever seeing combat.

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Europe & US agree on more sanctions for Russia

The energy industry is anticipated to be the most likely target

The US and EU have reached “a broad consensus on the need to increase pressure on the Kremlin” through the deployment of more sanctions, the Italian government announced on Tuesday, adding that the allies had also agreed on the need to “increase the international isolation of Moscow” during a virtual meeting between the US and heads of European nations regarding the latest phase of the war in Ukraine.

“We will increase our sanctions against Russia again,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed in a tweet.

It’s not clear exactly what sanctions are planned, though the energy industry is anticipated to be the most likely target. The conference participants made a point of reaffirming their “common commitment to diversify energy sources by reducing in this way the dependence on Russian supplies,” according to the Italian press release.

Russia has already been cut off by most western companies, from tech platforms to fast food outlets, but oil and gas sales to Europe continue as many EU countries have been unable to source sufficient supplies to compensate for the 40% of the gas the continental alliance buys from Russia.

That hasn’t stopped the US – which became energy independent under former President Donald Trump – from urging the EU to join its crusade against Moscow’s energy industry, promising to fill the gap with American liquefied natural gas – a much more expensive fuel that most European countries lack the infrastructure to store in large quantities.

France’s economic minister, Bruno Le Maire, revealed on Tuesday that he hoped to “convince” his country’s more reluctant neighbors of the need for a total embargo on Russian oil imports, blaming unnamed nations for “still hesitating” and complaining it could take weeks to get a consensus on the subject. Germany in particular has come out hard against the idea, warning it would send the country into a major recession.

However, the EU is optimistic about its ability to wean itself off Russian gas, claiming it will be able to slash consumption of the fuel by two-thirds by the end of the year. Replacement fuel would be piped in from Norway and Azerbaijan, imported from the US, and generated locally through expanded green energy projects, according to the EU executive commission. The EU currently sends about $850 million (€650 million) to Russia per day for oil and gas, even while sanctioning most other Russian industries.

In addition to von der Leyen, the virtual conference included US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Italian PM Mario Draghi, Polish President Andrzej Duda, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and European Council President Charles Michel.

(Oh what is that saying, oh yeah: cutting off your nose to spite your face)

Ukraine receives aircraft support from US allies

Pentagon says countries have helped boost Kiev’s air power ahead of new Russian offensive in Donbass region

The Pentagon said US allies have helped bolster Ukraine’s fleet of fighter aircraft by donating spare parts needed to make more of the jets operable as fighting with Russia heats up in the country’s Donbass region.

While Washington hasn’t been able to provide some of the Soviet-type weaponry that Kiev has requested, countries that have compatible gear in their inventories have stepped up to help, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday. In recent days, such aid has included fighter jet parts.

“They have received support to get some of their fixed-wing aircraft more operable again,” Kirby said. “Look, the proof’s in the pudding there. They right now have available to them more fixed-wing fighter aircraft than they did two weeks ago. That’s not by accident. That’s because other nations who have experience with those kinds of aircraft have been able to help them get more aircraft up and running.”

Kirby didn’t identify the countries involved in the parts shipments; nor did he disclose the number or type of jets that have been repaired and put back into service. The US and other NATO members have accelerated weapons shipments to Ukraine in recent weeks, citing alleged Russian attacks on civilians. Moscow has denied targeting civilians and accused Kiev of staging supposed war crimes to manipulate public opinion about the conflict.

(So it seems the pentagon is sending old parts and is expecting Ukraine to fix their equipment. Hahahaha)

The latest round of aid comes after the Pentagon last month rejected a request by NATO ally Poland for the US to facilitate a transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, saying such a move would risk spurring a wider war with Russia. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said last week that President Joe Biden’s administration only objected to the idea of transferring the jets from a US military base in Germany through contested airspace in Ukraine. Countries in the region are still free to give military aircraft to Ukraine, he said.

There has been no proof that this aid has been provided so far.Ukrainians reportedly launched a crowdfunding campaign, called “#buymeafighterjet,” soliciting donationsthat purportedly will be used to replace planes that have been destroyed by Russian forces.

(WTF, The grift in Ukraine never ends and they will steal from the most vunerable)

Kirby said the aid being sent to Ukraine currently – such as artillery pieces, radar systems and coastal defense systems – are tailored to the battles that are expected in the Donbass. He added that Ukraine also has been given more tanks, though not directly from Washington.

“The kinds of tanks they know how to use are not the tanks that we have in our inventory, but other nations have provided some tanks,” Kirby said. “Some nations have provided spare parts, so that they can get their inoperable tanks operable again.”

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that he recommended to Biden last week that Western nations undertake a long-term buildup of Ukraine’s military forces. “I proposed that our long-term goal must be to strengthen and fortify Ukraine to the point where Russia would never dare to invade again,” he told UK lawmakers.

(Who is actually believing this horseshit?)
