3 US sailors from aircraft carrier found dead in less than one week

Three sailors from the USS George Washington aircraft carrier were found dead in less than one week, the Navy said, as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and local authorities investigate the deaths.

One sailor was found unresponsive on board the carrier last Friday, while two other sailors were found at off base locations on April 9 and 10.

“While these incidents remain under investigation, there is no initial indication to suggest there is a correlation between these tragic events,” said Cmdr. Reann Mommsen, a Navy spokeswoman.

The Navy did not provide a cause of death for any of the three, but the ship did bring on board a Special Psychiatric Rapid Intervention Team. These teams are intended to provide short-term mental health support after a traumatic event, such as a loss of life.

The Navy identified the sailor found deceased on April 9 as Retail Services Specialist 3rd Class Mikail Sharp. The Navy identified the sailor found deceased on April 10 as Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Natasha Huffman.

The Navy did not identify the third sailor who was found unresponsive on board the ship on Friday and died.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and shipmates of our Sailors,” Mommsen said.

The USS George Washington is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. It is currently in Newport News, Virginia, where it is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul, a one-time process to replace the ship’s nuclear fuel and refit the ship for future operations. The ship has been at Newport News since August 2017.

Puzzling outbreak of liver disease in kids spreads to EU, US

Health officials say they have detected more cases of a mysterious liver disease in children that was first identified in Britain, with new infections spreading to Europe and the U.S.

Last week, British officials reported 74 cases of hepatitis, or liver inflammation, found in children since January. The usual viruses that cause infectious hepatitis were not seen in the cases, and scientists and doctors are considering other possible sources.

Additional cases of hepatitis had been identified in Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said in a statement Tuesday without specifying exactly how many cases were found.

U.S. officials have spotted nine cases in Alabama in children aged 1 to 6.

“Mild hepatitis is very common in children following a range of viral infections, but what is being seen at the moment is quite different,” said Graham Cooke, a professor of infectious diseases at Imperial College London. Some of the children in the U.K. have required specialist care at liver units and a few have needed a liver transplant.

The liver processes nutrients, filters the blood and fights infections. The infections caused symptoms like jaundice, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Hepatitis can be life-threatening if left untreated.

While it’s unclear what’s causing the illnesses, a leading suspect is an adenovirus. Only some of the children tested positive for coronavirus, but the World Health Organization said genetic analysis of the virus was needed to determine if there were any connections among the cases.

There are dozens of adenoviruses, many of them associated with cold-like symptoms, fever, sore throat and pink eye. U.S. authorities said the nine Alabama children tested positive for adenovirus and officials there are exploring a link to one particular version — adenovirus 41 — that’s normally associated with gut inflammation.

Public health officials ruled out any links to COVID-19 vaccines, saying none of the affected children was vaccinated.

The WHO noted that although there has been an increase in adenovirus in Britain, the potential role of those viruses in triggering hepatitis is unclear. WHO said there were fewer than five possible cases in Ireland and three confirmed cases in Spain, in children aged 22 months to 13 years.

The U.N. health agency said that given the jump in cases in the past month and heightened surveillance, it was “very likely” more cases will be detected.

Biden Signs Jackson’s Supreme Court Commission Early in Unusual Move

President Joe Biden signed papers to appoint Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this month even though she can’t begin work until Justice Stephen Breyer retires this summer.

Biden signed Jackson’s commission on April 8, the day they appeared together at the White House to celebrate her confirmation by the Senate, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Tuesday.

Jackson’s precise status has been the subject of online discussion stemming from the unprecedented timing of her Senate confirmation, more than two months before a vacancy was expected to arise. Typically, a new justice is sworn in almost immediately after the president signs the commission.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel concluded in an April 6 opinion that the president could “prospectively appoint” Jackson before Breyer steps down. That opinion relied on a 1970 memo written on a related issue by future Chief Justice William Rehnquist, then the head of the OLC.

The ins and outs of the appointment process aren’t likely to have any practical ramifications in Jackson’s case. Biden’s signing of her commission might eliminate any theoretical possibility of the Senate trying to reconsider her confirmation. She won confirmation on a 53-47 vote.

The administration’s approach also could serve as a precedent for future Supreme Court appointments in a politically divisive era for judicial nominations.

The OLC opinion, issued by Assistant Attorney General Christopher H. Schroeder, said presidents can make prospective appointments for vacancies “anticipated” to occur during their term in office. The opinion didn’t spell out exactly what that word means – for example, whether it would cover the case of a justice who was ill but hadn’t announced plans to leave the court.

Bates declined to provide a copy of the commission Biden signed.

What Is Dark MAGA? Trump Supporters Attempt Rebrand for 2024

A small fringe of Donald Trump's supporters is calling for the former president to get back on the highest stage of U.S. politics with a vengeance with the motto: #DarkMAGA.

More of a meme than a political slogan, Dark MAGA is a post-alt-right aesthetic that promotes an authoritarian version of Trump in dystopian, Terminator-like images. In some, the Trump Tower is painted entirely in black and the former president is seen piercing through the screen with blue laser eyes.

The hashtag first appeared on Twitter on January 21, and it had become increasingly popular by March. It can now be found in thousands of memes on Telegram and TikTok as well.

The aesthetics of the movement are easily recognizable: images edited in red and black or red and blue, featuring people with blue laser eyes often holding weapons or standing in front of neo-Nazi symbols.

Dark MAGA supporters are calling for a ruthless, unforgiving version of Trump to take revenge on his political enemies at the 2024 election - though the movement hasn't been recognized or endorsed by Trump in any form. The former president hasn't yet even formally confirmed whether he'll run for president in 2024.

In the description of the #DarkMAGA hashtag creator, as described by the Global Network on Extremism & Technology (GNET), Dark MAGA represents "Napoleon, being exiled, and then raising a f** army to attack Europe to attack the elites."

"#DarkMAGA is the aesthetic demand that Trump embrace a harder and more focused approach to the role only he can fill. He was too kindhearted, too forgiving. Dark MAGA demands he learn from his mistakes," writes another Twitter user.

"It's the realization that there is no political solution beyond vengeance," tweets another user.

"If you want to win, if you don't want to repeat the past, you have to get mean; you almost have to embrace the villain role that they're bringing you with," describes another supporter quoted by GNET.
