Former NSA chief joins Israel cybersecurity co Team8

Adm. (res.) Michael Rogers will work with Team8's portfolio companies and on developing new companies.

Israel cyber group Team8 today announced that it had recruited Adm. (res.) Michael Rogers as a senior advisor. Rogers headed the US National Security Agency (NSA), commanded the US Cyber Command and was chief of the Central Security Service of the US. He resigned the two latter positions last May.

Team8 cofounder and CEO Nadav Zafrir, former commander of IDF Unit 8200, said, "Mike will be an invaluable asset to Team8's company-building model, providing a fountain of knowledge for our existing portfolio companies, for the companies in development and to help identify technology gaps in the marketplace on which future companies could be built."

The announcement of Roger's appointment follows the announcement early this week that Team8 had sold Sygnia, a company that it founded three years ago to help large enterprises respond to cyber attacks, to Singaporean company Temasek for $250 million. The exit is the first for Team8, which was founded four years ago.

Team8 says that Rogers has a broad, strategic, and unique understanding of trends and developments in cyber warfare, a profound knowledge of the world's most advanced aggressive and criminal organizations, and expertise in the world's most advanced technologies and research in innovation for cyber defense. Rogers also has a special understanding of the cyber challenges currently facing private sector concerns and how these challenges will develop in the future.

Rogers will work with both Team8's existing portfolio companies and on the development of new companies. He will also help recruit senior employees for Team8 and the group's companies and formulate strategy for expanding Team8's business in the US. Team8 inaugurated its New York offices in October 2017 on the Nasdaq stage.

Russia to keep identity of payment system members secret

The central bank will no longer disclose the names of companies using SPFS

The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) said on Tuesday it will stop disclosing the identity of participants in the System for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS), the country’s alternative to SWIFT. Until recently, the list was posted on the regulator’s website.

“Under the current circumstances, we decided not to disclose on the website the list of companies connected to the system,” the CBR’s press service said, adding that “the users of the system can still see the list.”

Some Russian banks were cut off from SWIFT recently, effectively denying them access to international markets. The ban was part of the latest Western sanctions targeting Russia over its military operation in Ukraine.

According to the central bank governor, Elvira Nabiullina, most Russian banks, as well as 52 foreign organizations from 12 countries, have access to SPFS.

“Until there was such a threat of being cut off from SWIFT, foreign partners weren’t in much of a rush to join, but now we expect their readiness to be greater,” she added.

Russia’s payment mechanism SPFS has similar functionality and allows the transmission of messages in SWIFT format. It was created as an analogue to SWIFT that has been developed by the Bank of Russia since 2014.

A March report from French credit insurer Coface said that banks from Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, Sweden, and Turkey were among those connected to SPFS. According to Interfax, 331 organizations were connected to the Russian payment system as of the end of February, including banks from Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Cuba.

Australian PM accused of ‘massive foreign policy failure’

Morrison fending off opposition criticism for not tanking recently-signed Solomon Islands’ security deal with China

The Solomon Islands is a sovereign nation, so twisting its arm to prevent it from signing a security pact with China would have been the wrong move, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison argued on Wednesday. He was responding to opposition criticism of his government’s failure to stop the deal, which was described as a “massive foreign policy failure” on its part.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese and the opposition party’s foreign affairs spokesperson, Senator Penny Wong, lashed out at the government over the controversial deal during an election campaign event in Queensland state on Wednesday.

“Australia needs to do more than step up with the slogan in the Pacific, it needs to step up with real engagement, deep engagement, with our Pacific island neighbors,” Albanese said.

Morrison defended his government’s actions, saying his government respected the sovereignty of Honiara. Australia was treating the people of the Solomon Islands as siblings rather than children to be ordered around, he said.

“Our view is very much that we don’t go stomping around telling leaders in [the] Pacific islands what they should and shouldn’t do. You work with them respectfully and carefully,” he said.

The PM further defended his decision to send Pacific Minister Zed Seselja to China last week in a last-ditch attempt to stop the agreement from being signed. The opposition said he should have sent Foreign Minister Marise Payne instead. Morrison said Australia had to “calibrate” its diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues.

The security deal between China and the Solomon Islands was met with concern by the US and its Pacific allies, including Australia. Beijing confirmed its signing on Tuesday, but, per its usual policy, didn’t publish the text of the agreement.

Leaked text purporting to be a draft of the document included provisions for China to dock its military ships on the islands and use its police forces “to assist in maintaining social order” on behalf of Honiara.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare told his nation’s parliament on Wednesday that his government signed the deal “with our eyes open, guided by our national interests.” He touted Chinese aid in strengthening the Islands’ police force as one of the benefits of the pact.

Harris County DA’s Office Blasts Judge Lina Hidalgo, Tells Her to Stop Criticizing Grand Jury That Just Indicted Her Staffers in $11 Million Vaccine Contract Probe

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office blasted far-left judge Lina Hidalgo and told her to stop criticizing the grand jury that just indicted her top staffers.

Three of Judge Lina Hidalgo’s staffers were indicted last week after prosecutors expanded the investigation into an $11 million ‘vaccine outreach contract’ awarded to one of the judge’s political cronies.

Texas Rangers last month raided the office of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and executed a search warrant related to an $11 million ‘vaccine outreach contract’ awarded to one of the judge’s friends.

While Hidalgo was threatening to jail and fine people for violating her Covid rules, she was secretly trying to award one of her political cronies an $11 million ‘vaccine outreach’ contract.

Hidalgo ultimately panicked and canceled the $11 million vaccine contract after questions were raised that it was with a one-person firm with no experience.

Three of her staffers were indicted last week after Texas Rangers obtained a new search warrant and requested the Google accounts of Lina Hidalgo and 6 of her senior staffers.

Hidalgo lashed out at county prosecutors during an interview with ABC 13 last Wednesday, calling the charges ‘partisan politics.’

“At best, this is going forward with a fundamental misunderstanding of the facts and at worst, it is the weaponization of the criminal justice system for political purposes so I’m not going to play into that,” Hidalgo whined to ABC13. “My staffers are hardworking people. They work day and night for the people of Harris County and we’ve got work to do, like this catalytic converter issue or like childhood education, homelessness, huge wins.”

The Harris County DA’s office this week told Hidalgo to shut up and stop criticizing the grand jury.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office responded Monday to an attack last week by Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who characterized an indictment against three of her staffers as weaponizing the system with a “flimsy” case.

Following Hidalgo’s comments, the Harris County DA’s office is now defending the grand jury, which is made up of 12 community residents.

“Grand jurors give up countless hours of personal and professional time to serve and their service should never be disparaged or dismissed,” Dane Schiller, a spokesperson for the Harris County DA’s Office, said in a statement. “We want to thank the grand jurors in these public corruption cases for their hard work over a five-month period in which they reviewed voluminous documents and heard from numerous witnesses. Our work continues.”

Hidalgo’s campaign spokesperson, Toni Harrison responded Monday afternoon, saying, “No one is disparaging the grand jury – that’s a red herring to deflect attention from recent media reports raising important questions about this investigation. The fact is, we’ll never know what the District Attorney’s Office presented to the grand jurors because the process is secret. As we’ve said since the search warrant affidavits were made public, this investigation appears to have proceeded on a fundamental misunderstanding of the facts. We’re confident now that the legal process has moved into public view, the truth will come out and the staffers who have been wrongly accused will be cleared.”

"Taiwan Is Part Of China": Chinese Defense Minister Warns Pentagon Chief In 1st Call

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held a call with his Chinese counterpart, Defense Minister Wei Fenghe, wherein Wei conveyed a warning that no one can change Taiwan's status as part of China.

The Wednesday phone call was the first that the two defense leaders have held. Wei informed Austin that "If the Taiwan issue were not handled properly, it would have a damaging impact on Sino-US relations," according to Reuters.

The call was intended as a follow-up between last month's virtual meeting between presidents Biden and Xi, wherein Biden warned over China's deepening cooperation with Russia it executes its war against Ukraine.

A Pentagon official later said the Austin emphasized that the US will continue to adhere to the 'One China' status quo policy, which is the typical response from Washington officials anytime Beijing warns over US officials stoking the pro-independence movement on the democratic-run island.

Chinese state-run English language Global Times further described the importance of the call as one of Beijing conveying its unwavering resolve to Washington on the Taiwan issue. GT writes that Wei stressed "the importance of the Taiwan question, while demanding the US to stop its military provocations at sea, and not to throw mud or threaten China with the Ukraine issue."

Further, "Wei stated a solemn position over the Taiwan question, as he stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and this is a fact and a status quo no one can change."

Meanwhile, in the latest "scare" on the island…

Without doubt part of the "provocations" Beijing has in mind is that the US has been increasingly sending high-level officials to Taipei. In the latest example, just a week ago:

A delegation of United States lawmakers led by vocal China critics Bob Menendez and Lindsey Graham arrived in Taiwan on Thursday for a two-day trip as Beijing threatened “strong measures” in response.

The group of six US legislators is making the latest in a string of visits by foreign politicians to Taiwan in defiance of Beijing’s efforts to isolate the island nation.

Early this month there was talk that Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was set to visit Taiwan after an official trip to Japan - but the whole Asia trip was called off at the last minute due to her testing positive for Covid-19, after which she quarantined for a period. This would have made her the first House Speaker to visit Taiwan since 1997,when Republican Newt Gingrich did.

House GOPers Call On Top Scientist To Clarify Comments About Lab Leak Theory

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and other Republicans called on Dr. Kristian Andersen to clarify earlier comments he made about suppressing the COVID-19 lab leak origin theory.

In an earlier appearance before Congress, Andersen suggested that he had not suppressed information about the lab leak theory; according to the GOP letter released today, those earlier claims may be untrue in view of statements Andersen made to Vanity Fair.

“On February 3, 2022, we wrote you regarding apparent attempts to conceal or cover-up pertinent information regarding the origins of COVID-19, specifically the hypothesis that it leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China,” the letter begins. “On February 17, 2022, you responded to our letter and stated that you were ‘not aware of, and [were] not involved in, any effort to suppress any particular theory about the origins of SARS-CoV-2.'”

“Recent reporting by Vanity Fair brings into question the truthfulness of that response. Pursuant to 18 U.S.C. §1001, ‘in any matter within the jurisdiction of the … legislative … branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully mak[ing] any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation’ is a crime. We therefore invite you to correct the Committee record, in person, in a transcribed interview at your earliest convenience,” wrote the Republican lawmakers.

The Vanity Fair article details how in June 2021, evolutionary biologist Jesse D. Bloom had prepared a draft of a paper suggesting that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic leaked out of the high-level biological research facility in Wuhan, China. Though later information has indicated that this theory is likely true, many in the federal medical establishment were hesitant to admit such a link at the time.

Because Bloom’s paper contained potentially sensitive information about the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is chaired by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Bloom offered to allow Fauci to read the draft prior to peer review or publication.

Later, Bloom presented the paper to Dr. Andersen in a Zoom call, during which Andersen said he found Bloom’s research “deeply troubling.”
