Vermont governor signs bill to pay people $10K to move to state and work remotely
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) has signed a bill into law that will pay people $10,000 if they move to the state and work for an out-of-state employer remotely.
The bill, which is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2019, has budgeted grants for nearly 100 new remote workers in the first three years of the program, and 20 more workers per year for every year afterward.
Under the terms of bill, a new remote worker may be eligible for a grant under the program “for qualifying remote worker expenses in the amount of not more than $5,000.00 per year, not to exceed a total of $10,000.00 per individual new remote worker over the life of the program.”
Remote worker expenses that qualify for the grant include the purchase of computer software and hardware, broadband access or upgrade, and membership in a co-working or similar space.
The legislation is just one of the northeastern state’s latest efforts to counter its aging population.

The Greek who made smartphones smarter
Matthew Staikos is president at Staikos Investments, CEO at Vleepo and a Board Member and Advisor at Triggerfox.
He was born in 1980 and was raised in Canada. He graduated from the Mechanical and Computer Engineering School of the University of Toronto. In 2003, still as an undergraduate, he founded the Toronto based Torch Mobile with his brother, with subsidiaries in Beijing.
Six years later, Torch Mobile was bought out by the legendary Blackberry’s manufacturing company Research In Motion (RIM). With his hard work, Mattheus Staikos successfully climbed up to upper management status and he’s currently the Manager of the Browser & Web Platform group at RIM, with challenging duties varying from WebKit-based browser software’s development to embedded web technologies’ design for BlackBerry devices. His challenge was to develop Blackberry 10, designed to supply the brand’s mobile phones with an operating system during the first trimester of 2013.
Given the chance, Matthew makes an effort to keep in close touch with his Greek origins. Although he didn’t graduate a Greek school, he wished to study the Greek language. That’s the reason why he paid a year-long visit to Greece before residing permanently in Canada. The Greek language plays a major part in Matthew’s life and in his spare time he enjoys reading Greek books, listening to Greek music and watching Greek television shows.
In 2014 he left Blackberry, and his brother followed him a few months later.
Matthew Staikos joined in 2015 the Triggerfox Board of Directors and will be acting in an advisory role as head of corporate strategy. Triggerfox is a relationship intelligence platform that helps professionals build and maintain meaningful relationships. Triggerfox seamlessly aggregates all contacts information from various sources including professional and social networks, phone, calendar, and email into a unified address book, focusing on the people that are most important to you. The platform monitors social channels, news, and other data sources to provide powerful insights and updates about your contacts.
The 37-year-old Greek entrepreneur was found fatally wounded on 28-5-18, at Bay St. and Yorkville Ave, in Toronto. He was an exceptional person and a successful Canadian citizen who made his homeland proud with his limitless love for her and his big achievements in Canada.

Trump appoints Rear Adm. Fears as homeland security adviser
President Trump appointed Rear Adm. Douglas Fears Friday as his new homeland security adviser, the latest staff change at the White House National Security Council.
White House national security adviser John R. Bolton said Adm. Frears “brings more than three decades of experience across a range of vital homeland security areas including counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and disaster response, to the NSC.”
“Doug will serve as the president’s homeland security advisor and my point person on an array of vital tasks ranging from overseeing the NSC cybersecurity directorate to coordinating the interagency efforts during disaster response,” Mr. Bolton said.
Adm. Fears has extensive experience in government and is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Naval War College, and Harvard.
The move comes after Tom Bossert was ousted as Mr. Trump’s White House homeland security adviser this spring, shortly after Mr. Bolton took over for Gen. H.R. McMaster.
Adm. Fears has spent more than 30 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and had been serving as an acting homeland security adviser in recent weeks. He has been serving as senior director for resilience policy on the NSC staff. He also served on eight ships around the world, and served as commanding officer on three of those ships.

NYC sanctuary policy sends 'hundreds' of criminals back onto streets: DHS
Dozens of illegal immigrants shielded by New York City’s sanctuary policy this year have already gone on to be arrested for still other crimes including drug and theft, the federal government said Friday, looking to pressure the city to change.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement flagged more than 440 people in New York’s jails as deportation targets from January to April. But city officials would only hold those the mayor’s office deemed to have committed egregious crimes, ICE said, meaning dozens were shielded from deportation and set free.
Of those, “hundreds” were released and 40 have already been arrested for new crimes, said ICE, a branch of Homeland Security.
Among them is a 43-year-old Chinese man who was arrested in March for a drug offense, released back into the community then arrested for another felony drug charge a month later. A 28-year-old Salvadoran man arrested in March for assault was released, and a month later he was also back behind bars for a robbery arrest.
“Simply put, the politics and rhetoric in this city are putting its own communities at an unnecessary risk,” said Scott Mechowski, acting field office director for ICE’s deportation office in New York.
