Trump Spoke to McCarthy Last Night After Secret Audio Was Released… and Here’s What Happened

A secret recording of Kevin McCarthy telling Liz Cheney he will recommend Trump resign was released Thursday evening.

In a leaked recording of Kevin McCarthy on a call with Liz Cheney and other House Republicans, the Minority Leader told Cheney that he would counsel Trump to resign back on January 10, 2021.

“I think [impeachment resolutions] will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,” McCarthy said he would tell Trump before further adding, “what he did is unacceptable. Nobody can defend that and nobody should defend it.”

Liz Cheney had pressed McCarthy about whether Trump could possibly choose to resign on his own: “Is there any chance? Are you hearing that he might resign? Is there any reason to think that might happen?”

McCarthy then admitted that this was a topic he has “had a few discussions” about with others. “My gut tells me no,” he said. “I’m seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight…Um, from what I know of him, I mean you guys all know him too, do you think he’d ever back away? But what I think I’m going to do, is I’m going to call him.”

According to the Washington Post, Trump and McCarthy spoke Thursday evening after the audio was leaked.

Trump is reportedly not upset with McCarthy and was “happy that McCarthy hadn’t followed through on what he had said privately.”

But how much?

For now, McCarthy appears to have avoided blowback from the top of the party. Many Republicans seem to be waiting for a cue from Trump about how to respond, though some have weighed in to defend or criticize McCarthy.

And The Post reports he spoke with Trump after the audio of the call was released, and Trump was not upset — indeed, he was even happy that McCarthy hadn’t followed through on what he had said privately.

Trump has been more accommodating of McCarthy than McConnell. They soon patched things up after McCarthy publicly blamed Trump for not quelling the Jan. 6 riot and even floated a historic censure resolution against Trump. McCarthy has also been more solicitous of Trump than McConnell has. And that could matter for the fate of his career.

Recent history is instructive when it comes to those with whom Trump is willing to reconcile.

On the one hand, Trump has been willing to overlook past criticisms — even harsh ones — provided the lawmaker in question proceeds to display the requisite obsequiousness. Trump recently endorsed Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance despite Vance having sharply criticized him in 2016 as unfit to be president.

And indeed, part of the reason Trump was reportedly not upset Thursday night was that McCarthy’s retreat showed the strength of Trump’s grip on the party.

Biden announces Ukrainian immigrant program so refugees won't 'go through our southern border'

The majority polled, 76%, agree with Biden’s pledge to welcome Ukrainian refugees “with open arms.”

President Joe Biden on Thursday announced a new program to expedite the immigration process for Ukrainian refugees. The “Unite for Ukraine” program will allow Americans and nongovernmental organizations to sponsor Ukrainian refugees beginning April 25.

Last month, the administration announced the U.S. would admit 100,000 Ukrainian refugees after Russia invaded Ukraine Feb. 23.

The program “will be fast, it will be streamlined, and it will ensure the United States honors its commitment to the people of Ukraine, and that they need not go through our southern border,” Biden said Thursday at the White House.

He said the “new humanitarian parole program will complement the existing legal pathways available to Ukrainians, including immigrant visas and refugee processing. It will provide an expedient channel for secure, legal migration from Europe to the United States for Ukrainians who have a U.S. sponsor such as a family or an NGO [Non-Government Organization].”

After the president and his administration reversed and halted existing immigration laws and policies last year, at least 2 million illegal immigrants from over 150 countries were encountered or apprehended by federal agents at the southern border during Biden’s first year in office. Among them were Ukrainians.

Federal officials estimate that roughly 15,000 Ukrainians have already illegally entered the U.S. through the southern border, the Daily Mail reports.

A senior official in the State Department said the federal government is attempting to find 18,000 Ukrainians who entered the U.S. as refugees before Russia invaded through the so-called Lautenberg program, CBS News reported. The program allows religious minorities in former Soviet republics to obtain expedited U.S. entry.

According to recently release Customs and Border Protection data, 5,071 Ukrainians were apprehended or encountered by CBP and Border Patrol agents in March.

Federal officials have also already granted work permits and residency to roughly 60,000 Ukrainians through the Temporary Protected Status program. The Department of Homeland Security extended TPS for Ukrainians for 18 months, allowing eligible Ukrainians to work and stay in the U.S.

On a call with reporters ahead of Biden’s announcement, a Department of Homeland Security official said that as of April 25, Ukrainians who attempt to enter the U.S. at a land border without a visa or without going through the "Unite for Ukraine" process may be refused entry.

More than 5 million Ukrainian refugees are estimated to have fled to neighboring countries since Feb. 24, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reports; another 7 million are estimated to be displaced in Ukraine.

According to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll, most Americans want to help Ukrainian refugees, but only one-third say they’d support permanent residency for even half of the estimated 100,000 expected to arrive in the U.S.

The majority polled, 76%, agree with Biden’s pledge to welcome Ukrainian refugees “with open arms.”

But when asked if Ukrainian refugees should be allowed to stay in the U.S., only 25% of those polled said the expected 100,000 refugees should be “be granted permanent residency in the United States.”

Only 11% said between 50,000 and 100,000 should be allowed to stay; 16% said between 10,000 and 50,000 should be allowed to stay; 17% said less than 10,000 should.

Trump’s Truth Social Ready to Launch, Beta Testing Complete: CEO

The final rollout of Truth Social, the social media platform backed by former President Donald Trump, is ready to go live as beta testing is now complete, said its CEO.

Devin Nunes, the former California congressman-turned-CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group, told Newsmax Thursday that all Truth Social subscribers will be able to use the app “in just a few days.” He did not provide an exact date and time.

“It has all-new equipment, and no Big Tech. And guess what? No one can cancel us,” he added, saying that beta testing is now finished. “We’re going to be open to everybody,” Nunes continued.

After the app launched in February, the launch has been plagued by technical issues and users not being able to log onto the platform. The app, which is not yet available on Android platforms, shot to No. 1 on Apple’s App Store, but is now currently hovering around 50th place on the list of most-downloaded apps in the social networking category.

The company on Friday said it is migrating to a cloud computing system operated by Rumble, an alternative to YouTube.

“Yesterday, Truth Social and Rumble took a major stride toward rescuing the internet from the grip of the Big Tech tyrants,” Nunes said in a statement released Friday. “Our teams have worked tirelessly to realize this great endeavor. Rumble’s cloud infrastructure is second to none and will be the backbone for the restoration of free speech online for ages to come.”

And amid reports of technical problems that users have experienced since its launch, Nunes and other prominent users, including radio host Dan Bongino, said that they’ve seen higher engagement on Truth Social. “The traffic to the site and to the show is off the chart,” Bongino recently told Just the News, adding: “The engagement is extraordinary right now.”

After the announcement that Truth Social would be tied to Rumble, the Trump SPAC Digital World Acquisition—which is taking the social media public—rose about 6.4 percent Friday.

When Truth Social was launched in February, about 500,000 users had signed up within the first 48 hours, according to reports.

It comes, meanwhile, as tech entrepreneur Elon Musk announced Thursday that he has lined up $46.5 billion to finance a Twitter takeover, about a week after he made a public offer to buy the firm. In the filing, Musk, who is also the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, said he has yet to receive any formal response from Twitter’s board of directors after last week’s offer.

Active Shooting Underway Near Several Embassies in DC, at Least 3 People Shot, Police Says

There is an active shooting underway near several foreign embassies in northwest Washington, DC, with at least 3 people shot, a Washington’s Metropolitan Police spokesperson told Sputnik on Friday.

"We're responding to reports of shots fired… There have been three victims shot. We have two males and one female. I do not know their ages or conditions," the spokesman said.

According to the local media reports, city officials are advising residents to stay indoors due to an "active threat."

Several dozen police officers are reported to be on the scene near Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness St. in Washington's Van Ness area. The incident reportedly occurred just a few blocks from the Howard University Law School. The Metropolitan Police Department is advising residents in the Cleveland Park and Van Ness communities to stay in place.

Also, according to reports, bursts of rapid shooting were heard in the area.

A large number of law enforcement officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene. The US Secret Service reportedly sent its agents to assist police in the search and on the site.

Los Angeles County Reinstates Mask Mandate On Public Transit, LAX, Ride Shares

The following is a press release from the Health Department in Los Angeles County:

Public Health is issuing Health Officer Order to note that masking in all public transit within LA County and in LA County indoor transportation hubs continues to be required.

Per the revised Order, masking continues to be required to be worn by everyone, 2 years of age and older, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status, on public transit within the County. This includes wearing masks on commuter trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares. Masking continues to be also required in indoor transportation hubs including airport and bus terminals, train and subway stations, seaport or other indoor port terminals, or any other indoor area that serves as a transportation hub.

Public Health will reassess the indoor masking requirement when COVID-19 community transmission in Los Angeles County drops to the Moderate level, OR the CDC’s assessment is that an order requiring masking in the transportation corridor is no longer necessary for protection of the public’s health, OR within 30 days of this Order, whichever occurs first.
