Najib hires top US lawyers, including ex Bush AG Ashcroft, as 1MDB probe widens

Things have changed drastically since May 9.

Najib is no longer the head of a foreign government, and, therefore, no longer enjoys full immunity from legal action.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration's vigour in nailing Najib for the 1MDB scandal and cooperating with US investigators, makes the former prime minister and even his wife, Rosmah Mansor, principal targets in the US.

In the past, the focus of the DOJ investigation was mainly on Najib's son, Riza Aziz and businessman Low Taek Jho.

But without the immunity of a prime minister and with the focus of the investigation in Malaysia on him and his wife, Najib has moved to hire top lawyers in the US.

Ashcroft was the AG during the George W. Bush presidency and oversaw the DOJ during the difficult days after the September 11 terror attacks.

After the Bush presidency, he set up a powerful lobby group called The Ashcroft Group and The Ashcroft Law Firm.

The indictment notifies both defendants that the United States intends to seek forfeiture of at least $754,613.10, which is alleged to be traceable to the offenses.

According to the indictment, in late 2013, Katrina Brown began to operate as the primary principal for two businesses (Basic Products, LLC and CoWealth, LLC) that had obtained a loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA) in 2011 for $2.652 million, as well as a loan of $380,000 and grant of approximately $260,000 from the City of Jacksonville (COJ), to fund a business that specialized in manufacturing, bottling, and selling barbecue sauce.

NY Alain Kaloyeros, once dubbed a ‘Kingmaker,’ might have to wait a while longer to have his day in court.

According to recent federal court filings, former SUNY Polytechnic Institute President Kaloyeros and co-defendants were to be tried in June in U.S. District Court in Manhattan in a bid-rigging trial.

But federal prosecutors in Manhattan have asked for a delay to the June 11 start date to review potentially incriminating new evidence — and to drop a bribery count against his four co-defendants, according to court papers.

“The government respectfully writes to request a one- or two-week adjournment of the trial currently scheduled to begin on June 11, 2018,” reads a May 24 letter from federal prosecutors to District Judge Valerie Caproni. “As set forth in more detail below, it has recently come to the government’s attention that a document highly relevant to the charges at issue in the upcoming trial and responsive to grand jury subpoenas previously issued.”

Prosecutors asked for the delay to review documents that might include email exchanges before a project development request-for-proposal period that is considered important to the case. Prosecutors say that information should have been handed over following grand jury subpoenas previously served on Buffalo-based development firm LPCiminelli.

Kaloyeros has objected to the move. Additional details were not immediately available.
