Maher: Young People Have Anxiety Problems Because Theyā€™ve ā€˜Been Indoctrinatedā€™ on COVID

On Fridayā€™s broadcast of HBOā€™s ā€œReal Time,ā€ host Bill Maher stated that younger people ā€œhave been indoctrinatedā€ to be needlessly anxious about the coronavirus, which has contributed to depression among that demographic.

Maher said, ā€œI saw the videos of people erupting in cheers that we donā€™t have to wear a mask on the plane anymore. Now, thereā€™s also, you hear from the people will die crowd. And theyā€™re right, people will die. People will always die. Iā€™m against people dying, but theyā€™re always going to die. And you actually canā€™t stop it and masks, really, weā€™re finding out, are a particularly ineffective way of stopping it. I just wish it didnā€™t have to be political. Because I see a lot of people now on the news saying, Iā€™m still going to wear it. It just becomes an amulet and a symbol of your party and it should just be about the science.ā€

He later added that when he was out last week, ā€œ[W]hat was really sadā€¦the only people wearing masks were like 20. Thatā€™s who is wearing the masks, the people least likely to die from it. I feel like they have been indoctrinated in a way that ā€“. ā€¦ When I saw the kids with the masks all I could think of is anxiety. And then, right on cue, Iā€™m readingā€¦about why we have [these] levels of anxiety among teenagers that [are] just off the charts. Now, ā€” this is what I read ā€” 44% of high school students said they felt sad or hopeless. Now, little perspective, all my year 17, I was sad and hopeless. Because I got dumped. And when youā€™re a kid, you donā€™t see anything coming and everything is the worst thing that could ever ā€” so, some of that is that. When youā€™re a teenager, youā€™re going to be sad and hopeless all the time. But it also said a 40% increase in such feelings in the last ten years. Also, I thought interesting, they were looking for the reasons why the kids ā€” the CDC is looking into this, 29% lost jobs ā€” the parents lost jobs in the pandemic. So, we havenā€™t tallied up all those kind[s] of negatives that went into it.ā€

Maher further stated that telling children they were endangering their elderly relatives ā€œbothers me because itā€™s fake. Now, Iā€™m not saying there arenā€™t some people who live with their grandmas, but this is a country unlike most countries in the world that does not invite the elderly into our own homes. We put them ā€” how many of you young people who were so worried about giving it to grandma live with your grandma? Very few.ā€

Democrats Now Looking to Limit Losses Rather Than Add Seats in November

In recent weeks, the mood of Democratic leaders at the state and local levels has darkened considerably. And it promises to get even darker in the weeks and months ahead as voters in every age group and every income bracket look to blame Joe Biden and the Democrats for the inflation.

And inflation is far and away the number one issue American voters will make their decision on whom to support this November.

The presidentā€™s approval rating has settled into the low 40s since January and shows no signs of rising. And my colleague Chris Queen points out itā€™s rare for a presidentā€™s numbers to improve substantially prior to midterms.

As of April 22, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has reported raising almost $200 million. Their candidates are going to be very well funded, but what exactly are they going to run their campaigns on?

No one cares about much of anything except inflation. And Democrats canā€™t credibly blame anyone but themselves for that.

Another sure sign of impending doom is the large number of Democrats deserting Biden on his decision to repeal Title 42 immigration restrictions. Democrats are running away screaming from the coming chaos at the border. It probably wonā€™t do them any good.

As long as Republicans can continue to keep the focus on Biden and the economy, thereā€™s a chance for a significant waveregardless of what some experts are saying.

Twitter bans ads that contradict science on climate change

Twitter says it will no longer allow advertisers on its site who deny the scientific consensus on climate change, echoing a policy already in place at Google.

ā€œAds shouldnā€™t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,ā€ the company said in a statement outlining its new policy Friday.

There was no indication that the change would affect what users post on the social media site, which along with Facebook has been targeted by groups seeking to promote misleading claims about climate change.

The announcement coinciding with Earth Day came hours before the European Union agreed upon a deal requiring big tech companies to vet their sites more closely for hate speech, disinformation and other harmful content.

Twitter said it would provide more information in the coming months on how it plans to provide ā€œreliable, authoritative context to the climate conversationsā€ its users engage in, including from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The U.N.-backed science panelā€™s reports on the causes and effects of climate change provide the basis for international negotiations to curb climate change.

The company already has a dedicated climate topic on its site and offered what it described as ā€œpre-bunksā€ during last yearā€™s U.N. climate conference to counter misinformation surrounding climate change.
