Exercise Cold Response 2022 – NATO and partner forces face the freeze in Norway

Mar 7, 2022

What does it take to defend, fight and survive in an Arctic environment? What do you do if you fall through the ice while wearing 20 kilograms of military gear? Cold Response 2022 is a long-planned exercise bringing together thousands of troops from NATO Allies and partners, testing their ability to work together in cold weather conditions across Norway – on land, in the air and at sea.

Over the coming weeks, Allied and partner armed forces will trek across the vast wilderness, conduct live-fire drills, leap into freezing lakes, and much more. It's all about training vital skills, making sure that our armed forces are prepared to respond to any threat or crisis – and keep our countries and people safe. Cold Response 2022 is bringing together Allies from Europe and North America, demonstrating the enduring transatlantic bond at the heart of NATO.

The basics

WHO: Around 30,000 troops from 27 countries from Europe and North America

WHAT: Training together in cold weather exercises – on land, in the air and at sea

WHERE: NATO Ally Norway and surrounding seas

WHEN: March-April 2022

WHY: Helping Allies and partners practise working together so that they are prepared for any situation

Cold Response 2022 is a long-planned and regular exercise, which Norway hosts biannually. This year's exercise was announced over eight months ago. It is not linked to Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, which NATO is responding to with preventive, proportionate and non-escalatory measures.

Embrace the cold – NATO and winter operations

Allied forces need to be ready to operate in any environment under any conditions. Training in Norway allows NATO Allies and partners to practise their skills operating in extreme and rugged surroundings, from frozen fjords to shivering seas to ice-encrusted mountains. There's a reason that Norway hosts the NATO Centre of Excellence for Cold Weather Operations!

But many other NATO Allies host exercises and help develop this expertise as well, from the bitterly cold Baltics to the remote volcanic beaches of Iceland to the Canadian High Arctic. Check out the videos below to see cold-weather troops in action.

From Arctic Express to Trident Juncture – a long legacy of exercises in Norway

Norway has hosted exercises with NATO Allies and partners since the early 1950s. From Anchor Express to Northern Express, Atlas Express to Winter Express, over the decades Norway has helped Allies and partners learn how to operate together in its rough northern terrain. Exercise Cold Response itself was first held in 2006. Dead wrong: Brazilian newspaper ridiculed after saying Queen has died

Folha de São Paulo blames ‘technical error’ for website’s premature obituary for British monarch

One of Brazil’s leading newspapers has been forced into a mortifying retraction after inadvertently announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth “at the age of XX”.

The Folha de São Paulo incorrectly reported the British monarch’s demise on its website at about noon on Monday, telling millions of South American readers she had died “as a result of XXXXXXXX”.

“Elizabeth will go down in history as the longest-reigning British sovereign,” the newspaper said in its 1,300-word tribute to a woman who remained very much alive.

Realising its royal mistake, the Folha deleted its premature obituary and blamed the bloomer on “technical error”.

“It is normal practice in journalism to prepare stories about possible and/or probable situations, such as the death of world leaders, celebrities and public figures. Folha regrets the error,” the newspaper said.

That, though, was not enough to prevent a deluge of online ridicule over the premature eulogy to the sovereign, whose last official visit to Brazil came in 1968. “God save the Folha,” tweeted one reader.

Referring to the assertion the monarch had passed away “age XX”, the comedian and actor Gregorio Duvivier sniggered: “How cute the Folha doesn’t want to reveal how old the Queen was when she died.”

Others questioned the decision to illustrate the article with a photograph in which the Queen seemed to be laughing at her own death.

Much of the jeering came from supporters of Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, a media-bashing rightwing populist who often attacks the Folha, just as his political icon, Donald Trump, attacks CNN.

Bolsonaristas seized on the slip-up as further proof that the newspaper – a frequent critic of Brazil’s radical leader – was a wellspring of leftist disinformation. “Folha, you are a veritable factory of fake news, claiming Little Lizzy has died,” one tweeted alongside a gif of Trump declaring: “Fake News!”

Oduwaldo Calixto, a conservative activist from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party, joked: “The Folha de São Paulo tried to kill the Queen of England to see if people would buy it. If they had, they’d surely have tried to kill president Bolsonaro too.”

“Will Brazil one day have real journalists again?” wondered Calixto, whose followers deride the supposedly communist Folha as the “Foice de São Paulo” (The Sickle of São Paulo).

Journalists themselves were far more forgiving, understanding that the Folha’s blunder could easily have befallen them, too.

“Newspaper’s nightmare: accidentally publishing someone’s obit. In this case, Queen Elizabeth. Eek …” tweeted David Biller, the Brazil news director for the Associated Press.

I have just been notified by one of the two nurses who documented this and began to come forward… That just said that because they are a couple of years just before retirement, They decided that they don’t want to give any more additional information

This is the disgusting devastating result of #NursesThatStayed

These people are directly and criminally responsible for the suffering, the damage, and the death of every patient in their hospitals

_______

These are the communications I received one by DM and the other public on my chat channel desperately playing to get this to me

After they both discovered they might lose their paychecks in retirement, they refused to identify the hospital or the city or any other information.

So this will go on and on and people will continue dying because this kind of vital information will be kept hidden

Joe Biden Doesn't Know How Long He's Been President, Claims he Wrote the Infrastructure Law with His "Own Paw" (VIDEO)

Joe Biden on Thursday traveled to Portland, Oregon to talk about infrastructure and improvements.

Biden is underwater in Oregon, a state he supposedly won in 2020.

63% have a negative opinion about Joe Biden according to a new Oregon Public Broadcasting poll.

Biden’s speech was full of lies and gaffes, as usual.

Biden repeated his favorite lies:

Biden claims he spent time in the “foothills of Tibet” with Xi Jinping (Washington Post gave Biden 3 Pinocchios)

Rising Gas prices were a discussion at the dinner table when Biden was a child (gas prices were flat Biden’s entire childhood)

Joe Biden bizarrely claimed he wrote the original infrastructure bill with his “own paw.”
