Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers (R-Mesa) will soon receive a prestigious award for pushing back against calls to suspend the state's 2020 general election results.

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation announced on Thursday that Bowers is among the five people it will honor with the 2022 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

The award is given to public servants who have made "courageous decisions of conscience without regard for the personal or professional consequences," according to a press release from Bowers' office.

The award gets its name from former President Kennedy's 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, "Profiles in Courage." It tells the stories of eight U.S. Senators who risked their political careers for taking unpopular, yet principled, positions.

On multiple occasions, Bowers has refused inquiries or stopped legislation that would have cast doubt on the results of Maricopa County's 2020 general election, which saw President Joe Biden besting President Donald Trump in his quest for reelection. Bowers said he received multiple calls from Trump and the former president's lawyers. He's seen protests outside of his home and an unsuccessful recall effort. Bowers is running as a Republican for state Senate this November.

Bowers is receiving an award for "his actions to protect the integrity of Arizona elections," according to the press release.

"I am very grateful for this honor yet cannot help but feel undeserving of it," Speaker Bowers said. "Honoring my oath and the people's choices at the ballot box are not heroic acts — they are the least that Arizonans should expect from the people elected to serve them."

Police in Shenzhen city in southeastern China quickly tracked down a pastor and members of a house church after seeing videos posted on WeChat of their ocean baptisms, according to a report.

Six members of Shenzhen Trinity Gospel Harvest Church and its Pastor Mao Zhibin drove two hours to a coastal city for the Easter baptisms held on April 16. According to China Aid, the baptisms were discretely planned and held without incident.

However, a person known to the church posted photos and videos of the baptisms on WeChat. Soon thereafter, an official called Mao, who was eating lunch with those who had been baptized and asked him to confirm his identity due to a COVID-19-related measure.

Minutes later, several police officers and the local deputy mayor arrived at the location where they were all having lunch. The official and police waited for the Christians to finish their lunch and then checked their identity cards and scanned their faces.

One of the officers had the baptism videos on his phone, the pastor said. Several more photos of the pastor appeared on the phone after they scanned his face.

“The technology used by the government surpasses traditional authoritarian reign and should be called super authoritarianism,” Pastor Mao was quoted as saying, as per the translation provided by the U.S.-based persecution watchdog International Christian Concern. “However, I also believe that God still reigns over all. We just need to trust in Him, walk humbly with God.”

The pastor added that it's worse than George Orwell's 1984, with the officials monitoring WeChat and hundreds of millions of surveillance cameras in the country monitoring the movements of every person in China.

“Dictators always dreamt about eliminating privacy, monitoring everyone, knowing everything you do, think, and feel…It is now possible.”

The privacy versus security debate is as old as civilization, historian and writer Yuval Noah Harari said recently at the Athens Democracy Forum, an annual international conference in Greece. “But there is now something new: for the first time in history, it is possible to eliminate privacy completely,” said Harari, chief advisor to the World Economic Forum’s leader, Klaus Schwab.

“It was not possible before,” said Harari, “It is now possible. A fundamental change has taken place. “Dictators always dreamt about completely eliminating privacy, monitoring everyone all the time, and knowing everything you do, and not just everything you do but everything you think, and everything you feel.”

Whether it was a tyrant in ancient Greece or Stalin, they always dreamed of it, but they could never do it because it was technically impossible. Now it’s possible, Harari told New York Times moderator Liz Alderman.
