On December 18, 1972, Beau's mother and infant sister Naomi were killed in an automobile accident while Christmas shopping. Beau was just under four years old, and his brother, Robert Hunter, was just under three years old. Beau and Hunter were in the car when the crash took place and were critically injured but survived.
