Australia gifts Ukraine with six M777 155mm lightweight towed howitzers and howitzer ammunition to fight off Russia

The United States and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia appealed to the Morrison government to provide heavy artillery weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as Russia intensifies attacks in Donbas.

Australia will gift Ukraine with six 4100kg guns which have a range of 30km to assist the country in its response to “Russia’s brutal, unrelenting and illegal invasion”.

The six M777 155mm lightweight towed howitzers and howitzer ammunition will be sent to Europe following a request by the United States and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia to provide heavy artillery weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The appeal comes as Russia intensifies its attacks in the Donbas.

“This additional military assistance will further support Ukraine in its response to Russia’s brutal, unrelenting and illegal invasion,” a statement from Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Defence Minster Peter Dutton said on Wednesday.

“The $26.7 million in new support for Ukraine takes Australia’s total contribution to Defensive Military Assistance to Ukraine to over $225 million.”

Australia is also providing $65 million in humanitarian assistance, with a focus on protecting women, children, the elderly and food, shelter and emergency medical supplies.

At least 70,000 tonnes of thermal coal to power Ukraine’s resistance has been given by Australia.

"The Australian Government will continue to identify opportunities for further military assistance where it is able to provide a required capability to the Ukraine Armed Forces expeditiously," the statement said.

“The Australian Government reiterates our strongest support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and for the people of Ukraine.

“Australia stands with the people of Ukraine, and again calls on Russia to cease its unprovoked, unjust and illegal invasion of Ukraine.

“The Government will not disclose delivery arrangements at the direct request of Ukrainian officials and other partners.”

The M777 marked a “significant advance in Army’s capabilities”, according to Australian Army’s government website.

“The gun has a much higher level of digital connectivity allowing more rapid, safe and accurate application of effects across the battlespace,” the website reads.

Hogan urges Marylanders to get vaccinated with $1M prize on the line

As of Tuesday, 11.7 million vaccinations have been administered, with an additional 2.3 million booster shots.

With the grand prize drawing nearing for the Vax Cash 2.0 promotion, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is encouraging residents to become vaccinated.

The governor announced the $1 million grand prize drawing will be held on Tuesday. Hogan said residents have until Monday to become vaccinated to qualify for the drawing.

“Getting fully protected with a booster shot continues to be the single most important thing you can do to minimize the impact of COVID-19 and its variants,” Hogan said in the release. “If you haven’t gotten around to it yet, getting boosted this week gives you a chance to enter our grand prize drawing.”

The program, which was launched in February, is part of the state’s booster action plan, according to the release. The Vax Cash 2.0 initiative, upon completion, will have awarded $2 million in cash prizes to 12 residents. Following an initial drawing of $500,000, weekly $50,000 drawings have been held leading up to the grand prize drawing.

As of Tuesday, according to the release, 11.7 million vaccinations have been administered, with an additional 2.3 million booster shots. Free COVID-19 vaccinations are available at hundreds of locations across the state.

In order to be eligible for the Vax Cash 2.0 promotion, you must be a Maryland resident over the age of 18 and have received the first dose or a booster does at a non-federal facility. Residents vaccinated through Veterans Affairs are eligible.

MSNBC host Joy Reid said Tuesday on her show “The ReidOut” that Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter is about bringing back a system like apartheid in 1980’s South Africa.

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971 and lived there until he moved to Canada at the age of 17.

Reid said, “It was distressing to a lot of people, not least of which the people who work at Twitter. Who, you know, in their internal Slacks are really — a lot of them are wringing their hands, probably not all of them, but a lot of them, and just worried about what becomes of their company. Elon Musk’s companies have a history of open racism. You know, there’s been this lawsuit against Tesla, and he himself is a troll. So his idea of freedom means freedom to be a jerk and to be cruel and to have no one be able to stop you.”

She added, “They don’t want to just be in the club. They are on the — they’ve been described as being on the outside of the culture looking in through the glass, but they don’t just want to come in. They want to come in and be able to punch people in the face and walk around and laugh about it and to not have anyone be able to stop them. The thing is, the enjoyment they get out of being in this ‘town square’ is being able to harass people being able to attack people. There was a time when people had the double hashtags around their names because they were Jewish, and right-wingers were saying get in the oven any time you made any benign comment on Twitter. Former judge Peter Vickery dies of natural causes, months after sexual harassment claims emerge

Retired Supreme Court judge Peter Vickery, QC, found by the court to have sexually harassed two junior associates, has died.

Vickery died of natural causes after a battle with cancer. He had been in palliative care for some time.

Vickery was at the centre of a media storm in February after The Age revealed he had sexually harassed two junior female associates during his time on the bench.

Two independent reports commissioned by the Victorian Supreme Court, written by respected barrister Kate Eastman, SC and seen by The Age, found the women experienced unwelcome sexual advances from the judge. He also subjected them to unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature and unfavourable treatment in their employment because they were women, the report found.

Vickery denied the claims, and issued a statement on his website saying he never meant harm to the women.

“I never for a second believed that anything I did may have hurt two of them,” he wrote.

“I accept that I should have been more alert to this possibility. Had I possessed sufficient awareness, without hesitation I would have altered my behaviour. I extend my sincere apologies to both for any distress unknowingly caused.”

The associates – who were aged 21 and 26 when they began working for him, while he was some 40 years older, accused Vickery of kissing them and making inappropriate advances.

One woman said Mr Vickery put his hand between her thighs in the back seat of a car, while the other said he repeatedly sent her poetry. One poem was adorned with Italian master Caravaggio’s 1602 painting Amor Vincit Omnia (Love Triumphant), and contained the Latin sign-off Nunc scio quid sit amor, or “now I know what love is”.
