If you are buying starting chicks to raise at home, make sure you pay for them in cash which usually means at a place like Tractor Supply, in person, rather than mail order, like Murray McMurray. Benefits to larger brick and mortar stores is they usually sex the birds, meaning you get females (for eggs.. you don't need a rooster) Each hen will eventually lay an average of 1 egg per day.
Getting chicks from local people works too, but less likely to sex them, so wait until birds are a bit older and you can differentiate the roosters.
Remember, PAY IN CASH. Be untraceable.
