The first white explorer of the Colorado river, John Wesley Powell told Congress that only 2% of the land in the West was arable, but they didn't listen.

 

The idiots in charge had some sort of religious belief called "The Rain Follows the Plow" (tied to "Manifest Destiny". They believed that if one simply plowed the land, "God" would provide rain for the crops.

 

Idiotic thinking and decision-making by brainwashed morons that led to the dust-bowl.

Powell asserted that the region should be divided and managed by "Watershed" not by arbitrary straight line boundaries. I agree with Powell…but the superstitious dunderheads divided the territories with straight lines, and gave rich morons in the precious metal rich cities the authority to control the water in distant lands. The rain does NOT follow the plow.
