Going underground: Ukraine’s subterranean fighters

Faced with the prospect of sending Russian troops into subterranean combat, Vladimir Putin demurred. “There is no need to climb into these catacombs and crawl underground,” he told his defense minister on April 21, 2022, ordering him to cancel a planned storming of a steel plant in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

While Putin’s backup plan – to form a seal around trapped Ukrainian forces and wait it out – is no less brutal and there are reports that Russians may still have mounted an offensive on the site, Putin’s hesitancy to send his forces into a sprawling network of tunnels under the complex hints at a truth in warfare: Tunnels can be an effective tool in resisting an oppressor.

Indeed since the war began in February, reports have emerged of Ukrainian defenders using underground tunnel networks in efforts to deny Russian invaders control of major cities, as well as to provide sanctuary for civilians.

As an expert in military history and theory, I know there is sound thinking behind using tunnels as both a defensive and offensive tactic. Such networks allow small units to move undetected by aerial sensors and emerge in unexpected locations to launch surprise attacks and then essentially disappear.

For an invader who does not possess a thorough map of the subterranean passages, this can present a nightmare scenario, leading to massive personnel losses, plummeting morale and an inability to finish the conquest of their urban objective – all factors that may have factored in Putin’s decision not to send troops underground in Mariupol.

Joy Reid’s MSNBC show plummets to lowest-rated month ever as audience evaporates

In a sign that even liberals are no longer buying what she’s selling, MSNBC bomb-thrower Joy Reid’s ratings are cratering, falling to their lowest level since her show debuted in 2020, yet another very bad omen for Democrats who are set to reap the whirlwind for the seeds of racial discord that they have spent years sowing.

Despite April being a heavy news month, especially with the contentious Senate confirmation hearings of newly minted Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a veritable bonanza for race-obsessed MSNBC pundits, “The ReidOut” struggled to attract viewers, putting up an average of a measly 1.1 million viewers in an indication that “the race lady” may have already passed her sell-by date.

Biden Unites The Country! Nobody Wants Him As President Any More

Last December, the I&I/TIPP poll asked registered voters who they’d like to see on the Democratic ticket in 2024. A shockingly low 37% of Democrats named President Joe Biden. If Biden didn’t run for reelection, only 16% wanted Vice President Kamala Harris to be on the ballot.

The findings, we said at the time, are “a devastating sign of Biden’s weakening support within his own party.” (Google’s content police found the results so upsetting that they labeled our article accurately reporting the poll results as “unreliable and harmful.”)

In the months following that poll, Biden gave his State of the Union speech, Russia invaded Ukraine, and COVID receded as a threat.

Under normal circumstances, these events, along with ginned-up positive news from corporate media, would boost a president’s approval rating. At least they’d shore up support among his base.

Yet, when we asked the same question of voters this month, Biden’s devastating numbers got shockingly lower.

Our April I&I/TIPP poll found that only 29% of Democrats want Biden on the ticket in 2024, and only 12% want Harris.

Overall, less than one in five adults (19%) now say they want Biden on the ticket, down from 22% in December.

Other polls show similar dismal results.
