Map mosaic. The map is made up of many small sections sewn together at display time. Each square is the thumbnail of a separate, high resolution, file. As you zoom over an area, the range of files selected / displayed changes.
This is just a way of displaying FAR more information than your computer could possibly display (unless you are a government funded mapping center).
