Jainism: an Indian religion

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions in practice to this day.

Jainism is a transtheistic religion, holding that the universe was not created, and will exist forever.

It is believed to be independent, having no creator, governor, judge, or destroyer.

In Jain theology, it does not matter how correct or defensible the violence may be, one must not kill or harm any being, and non-violence is the highest religious duty.

Its theology teaches that one must neither kill another living being, nor cause another to kill, nor consent to any killing directly or indirectly.

"all living creatures must help each other"

Jains believe that violence negatively affects and destroys one's soul, particularly when the violence is done with intent, hate or carelessness, or when one indirectly causes or consents to the killing of a human or non-human living being.

Jains ritually worship numerous deities

In Jainism Abortion is strictly forbidden.

The one who does the abortion gets as much paapa karma as much one gets to murder a human.

Jain clearly says "NO" to abortion in any circumstances. Child in the body is also panchendriya. and killing panchendriya is the greatest sin.

Abortion is equivalent to murder of some innocent life. You are having nikachit karma for killing panchendriya jeev.

Jains Killing, Killing Jains: Aggressive Magic in the Jain Tantras

During the medieval period [Digambara Jains] in Karnataka composed and circulated two magic Tantras containing aggressive magic that was in vogue at the time and that challenged Jain ideals of nonviolence and nonaction.

Prescribing explicitly hostile magic ranging from seduction to bewildering and even killing, Jain Tantra authors invoked wild goddesses cast into more Jain-acceptable appearances.

Grim grimoires : pragmatic ritual in the magic tantras

Two circa tenth-century Digambara Jain tantras from Karnataka describe all the six results procedures, namely the Bhairavapadmavat ikalpa and the Jv alamalinikalpa. The two Jain tantras represent a curious backwater of medieval Jain ritual culture in which pragmatic rituals for aggressive, martial, and even erotic ends are prescribed without concern for normative Jain ideology on non-violence and asceticism.

Titular goddesses Padmavat i and Jvalam alini are Jain deities suited for the agonistic, medieval world in which Saivas, Buddhists, and Jains competed to secure royal patronage and vied for popularity in contentious religious marketplaces. Presenting six results lore in these texts uncovers a Jain tradition of magic that has never been thoroughly studied and demonstrates contiguity with Saiva tantra traditions, especially Srividya.

A full translation of the Bhairavpadmavat ikalpa is appended to this dissertation.
