Buchanan County supervisor indicted on election fraud, embezzlement charges, Trey Adkins is charged with 82 felonies.
A member of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors is charged with election fraud and embezzlement after a special grand jury on Monday handed down 82 felony indictments against him.
Trey Adkins, a Democrat who first was elected to the board in 2011, is charged with felonies including 34 counts of making a false statement, 11 counts of violating absentee voting procedures, 11 counts of forging public records and eight counts of embezzling public money, according to a news release from Zack Stoots, the Russell County commonwealth’s attorney, who was brought in as special prosecutor in the case.
A second person, Sherry Lynn Bailey, was indicted on a dozen counts, including making false statements and forging public records, the news release said.
Virginia State Police have been investigating the matter for more than two years, the release said.
The release does not provide any additional details about the charges, including any information about which election or elections were investigated or how much money Adkins is accused of taking, or from where. Stoots said his office will not be releasing any more information about the case.
Adkins did not respond to a message sent to him through Facebook on Tuesday afternoon. Several telephone numbers associated with his construction company, TayCo, were disconnected or were not accepting messages.
No one answered the phone at the Buchanan County administrator’s office Tuesday afternoon, nor was the phone system accepting messages.
Adkins, a contractor, represents the Buchanan County district that includes Hurley, the community that was hit in August by a massive storm and flash flooding that killed one person and destroyed dozens of homes.
Adkins has posted frequent video updates about the recovery efforts on his Facebook page, and last fall he launched his own fundraising effort for Hurley residents, separate from the larger campaign managed by a public-private partnership called the Hurley Long-Term Recovery Group. He said in November that he had brought in more than $150,000. About $120,000 of that was paid out directly to residents, he said at the time, while the rest was used to rent equipment to help with the cleanup.
In 2019, Adkins won a two-way election with almost 58% of the 1,400 votes cast. In 2015, he pulled 70% of the vote – again, against one opponent – and in 2011, he received 48% of the vote in a three-way race, according to state election records.

The alleged leak of the opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is nothing short of breathtaking. It would constitute one of the greatest breaches of security in the history of the Court.
…The article represents the greatest crisis that Chief Justice John Roberts has faced in his tenure on the Court. It is a breach of the most fundamental obligations and traditions of the Court.
..If this is a true copy of the draft opinion it is hard not to view this as a malicious act. What is the motivation of releasing such a decision? The only intent of such a leak is to trigger a response from outside of the Court.
…This draft is from February and the majority can shift on such opinions. However, the act of leaking such a draft opinion ranks as an original sin for judicial ethics.
…The most likely motivation is obviously to pressure the Court and push the legislation in Congress on a federal abortion law before the midterm elections. It will also likely renew the call for court packing

Political newcomer wins GOP nomination to challenge longest-serving woman in the House

JR Majewski has won the Republican primary in Ohio's 9th Congressional District and will challenge one of the longest-tenured members of Congress for what used to be a safe Democratic seat.
Majewski, an air force veteran who painted a giant Donald Trump campaign logo on his lawn during the 2020 presidential election, beat out three other contenders for the GOP nomination in a closely contested primary. He can expect some help from the larger Republican Party in his bid to take down Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), who was first elected in 1982. Due to Ohio's messy redistricting process, her former solidly Democratic seat in Cleveland has shifted to a "toss-up," according to the Cook Political Report.
Majewski has no previous political experience, and was vying for the Republican nomination against state Sen. Theresa Gavarone and state Rep. Craig Riedel. Riedel was the top fundraiser, with $435,000, according to the Federal Election Commission's most recent filings. Kaptur has raised nearly $1 million in her bid to keep her seat and did not face a primary challenger.
The National Republican Congressional Committee added Kaptur's district to its list of unsafe Democratic seats it will target during the 2022 midterm elections. While other incumbents chose to retire instead of face a challenge in an unfamiliar district, Kaptur said she intends to fight for her seat and continue her support of President Joe Biden.
Republicans capturing the seat would help the party net the five districts it needs to claim a majority for the first time since losing it in the 2018 midterm elections.
