Many anons of many diverse talents and "beliefs" were thinking "here is a place I can get away from the group think and engage in "taboo" (free) discourse"; at least as free as it could be at the time. Everyone eventually learned that the more they learned, the more they didn't know. As some have said "The unlearning was the most difficult part".
