The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched by a UN Summit in New York on 25-27 September 2015 and is aimed at ending poverty in all its forms. The UN 2030 Agenda envisages “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”. It is grounded in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and international human rights treaties and emphasises the responsibilities of all states to respect, protect and promote human rights. There is a strong emphasis on the empowerment of women and of vulnerable groups such as children, young people, persons with disabilities, older persons, refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants.

The Agenda’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and their 169 targets, aim at eradicating poverty in all forms and “seek to realize the human rights of all and achieve gender equality”.

The contribution of the Council of Europe

The Council of Europe contributes to achieving these goals through most of its sectors through work funded by the ordinary budget as well as with extra-budgetary contributions. SDG number 16 "Peace, justice and strong institutions" is particularly relevant for the Council of Europe, with virtually every sector of the Organisation being involved in achieving the goal.

The sustainable development agenda is particularly important for the Organisation’s development co-operation programmes. The Council of Europe’s new Project Management Methodology is also there to ensure that methods as well as substance of these programmes contribute to achieving the agenda, including through a human rights approach. Overall, the cooperation programmes carried out via the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes are currently worth €200 Million. For more information, see the Council of Europe's thematic page.

Tesla's new steering yoke isn't retro, it's a safety risk

cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-s-steering-yoke

Let me get this out of the way up top: I watched a lot of Knight Rider when I was a kid. I mean, a lot. As a child of the '80s, I specifically remember pedaling my heart out on my BMX to make sure I got home in time to watch that iconic opening sequence. You probably know it by heart, with KITT poking his Cylon-aping nose out of the dusky desert. The show, terrible as I now realize it to be, was a significant part of my childhood. Back then I really, really wanted to be just like Michael Knight.

Despite all that, I can't help but see Tesla's new KITT-style steering yoke as anything other than a bad idea. I fear it'll not just be awkward to use, it's potentially unsafe. Here's why.

Lexus' New Steering Yoke Is Weird but Kinda Wonderful

cnet.com/roadshow/news/lexus-rz-steering-yoke

Along with Tesla, another automaker is quite literally reinventing the wheel: Lexus will offer a futuristic-looking yoke in its new 2023 RZ 450e all-electric SUV. This almost handlebar-like input device provides some genuine benefits, but as I found out while testing the RZ in Spain last week, it also takes some getting used to.

The technology will be called One Motion Grip (yep, that's OMG for short) though in the US it will be christened Steer-By-Wire, a more sensible name. With no physical mechanical connection to the front wheels, Lexus' yoke eliminates wheel winding and hand-over-hand movements in tight, low-speed turns. This setup also provides a better view of the instrument cluster and enhances agility at pretty much all speeds.

But why? Takashi Watanabe, the RZ 450e's chief engineer, explained that EVs have much more torque and are usually far more responsive than internal-combustion vehicles. He and his team wanted to offer a steering system that matches the responsiveness of an electric powertrain, and the only real way to do this is with steer-by-wire technology. He also noted that as drivers become more familiar with the technology, it could also serve as a stepping stone to autonomous vehicles with steering wheels that completely fold away when not in use. Basically, in its own way, the yoke is helping to prepare motorists for a self-driving future.

1/First some news, we are joining Elon Musk’s bid for Twitter and investing $400MM into the company.

2/We invested, because we believe in Ev and Jack’s vision to connect the world and we believe in Elon’s brilliance to finally make it what it was meant to be.

3/While Twitter has great promise as a public square, it suffers from a myriad of difficult issues ranging from bots to abuse to censorship. Being a public company solely reliant on an advertising business model exacerbates all of these.

4/Elon is the one person we know and perhaps the only person in the world who has the courage, brilliance, and skills to fix all of these and build the public square that we all hoped for and deserve.

We are excited to be part of this mission.
