Germany’s Der Spiegel publication has claimed Zelensky and Steinmeier talked on the phone to ease tensions caused by Kiev snubbing the German president
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has held talks by phone with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Der Spiegel media outlet claimed on Thursday. The two leaders reportedly agreed to move on and forget past grudges relating to Kiev’s decision last month to call off Steinmeier’s visit to Ukraine at short notice over alleged links to the Kremlin.
According to the publication, Zelensky and Steinmeier spoke by phone for about 45 minutes on Thursday, with the German president reportedly pledging Berlin’s full support to Kiev. The outlet described the alleged conversation as an attempt to ease tensions between the two countries, which resulted from Ukraine’s prior decision to cancel Steinmeier’s planned visit to Kiev at the last minute in mid-April.
Der Spiegel, citing an unnamed source, also reported that the latest phone talks indicated that the “irritations of the past were removed.”
Zelensky reportedly invited both Steinmeier and the entire German leadership to visit Ukraine, (ok wth would the leadership go to a supposed war zone?) though it was not clear whether the German president was planning such a trip in the near future, the outlet noted. However, according to Der Spiegel, if the two leaders indeed buried their grudges, that could pave the way for Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Ukraine.
This scenario, the publication claims, is also being viewed as desirable by Germany’s Social Democratic party, which both Steinmeier and Scholz are members of. The party reportedly sees such a visit as an “important sign of solidarity.”
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Wednesday her plans to visit the Ukrainian capital soon, refusing to disclose any concrete date, however.
According to Der Spiegel, the diplomat would want to commemorate WWII victims together with her Ukrainian counterpart and discuss the current situation.
On Tuesday, Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andrey Melnik, branded the country’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, an “offended liverwurst” over his refusal to pay a visit to Kiev after Ukrainian authorities snubbed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in mid-April.
The comment came in response to Chancellor Scholz’s interview to Germany’s ZDF TV channel, in which he made it clear that Ukraine’s refusal to receive Steinmeier last month stood in the way of Scholz’s own potential visit to Kiev. Scholz described the snub as a “remarkable instance.”
Steinmeier was supposed to pay a visit to Kiev along with the leaders of Poland and the Baltic states on April 13. However, the Ukrainian authorities signaled to him the day prior that he was “not wanted” in Kiev because he had allegedly fostered good relations with Moscow.
Russia attacked its neighbor in late February, following Kiev’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

EU calls for confiscation of frozen Russian assets

Sanctioned assets should be used to rebuild Ukraine, the European Council president says
Russian assets that have been frozen in the EU as part of sanctions against Moscow over the conflict with Kiev should be seized and allocated for the reconstruction of Ukraine, European Council President Charles Michel said on Thursday.
“I’m absolutely convinced that this is extremely important not only to freeze assets, but also to make it possible to confiscate them, to make them available for rebuilding the country. I’m personally convinced,” Michel insisted in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
He revealed that he had already told the Council’s legal service to come up with “some possible ideas in order to find a legal solution in line with the principles of the rule of law, that would facilitate and make possible the confiscation of the assets of the people who are sanctioned by the EU or by other countries in the world.”
Acting in such a manner should be “a question of fairness, a question of justice” for Brussels, he added.
However, Michel acknowledged that implementing his plan on a “legal level is not so simple.”
“There are 27 legal systems across the EU and, in many EU member states, this needs a decision taken by a court in order to make it possible. It takes time, it’s a difficult and long process,” he explained.
The European Council president’s ideas echoed those previously voiced by Washington. In late April, the White House presented a set of “comprehensive proposals” aimed at supposedly holding Russian “oligarchs” accountable for the events in Ukraine. The proposals included “establishing a streamlined administrative authority” that would be able to confiscate sanctioned assets and transfer them to Kiev to “remediate harms of the Russian aggression.”
Moscow decried those American plans as “nothing but simple expropriation of private property that [the US] seeks to falsely justify.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it would become “a very dangerous precedent,” showing “just how fragile all the universally accepted foundations have become” in the field of private property rights, economics and politics.
The US, EU and some other countries have slapped several rounds of unprecedented economic sanctions on Moscow over its ongoing military operation in Ukraine. Foreign assets of the Russian Central Bank and various other entities and businessmen have been frozen, Russia was effectively cut off from the dollar- and euro-dominated money markets, and a wide array of foreign businesses have stopped dealing with the country.

US helped Ukraine ‘kill’ Russian generals – NYT
Washington provided Kiev with intelligence on the location of high-ranking Russian officers, the newspaper has claimed
The US has assisted Kiev’s forces in killing Russian generals by sharing intelligence on their location inside Ukraine, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing senior American officials.
Washington reportedly provided Kiev with information on Russia’s mobile military headquarters, which are said to relocate frequently in the conflict zone. Kiev then combined this data with its own intelligence to carry out artillery strikes or other attacks that led to the deaths of commanding officers, sources told the paper.
The US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to specify how many Russian generals exactly were killed with American help.
They also didn’t reveal the methods used by Washington to acquire data on Russian command headquarters over concerns that it could hamper further intelligence gathering.
The NYT pointed out that throughout the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, US agencies have relied on a variety of sources, including classified and commercial satellites, to trace the movement of Russian troops.
The reported assistance in targeting the generals was part of a classified effort by the Biden administration to provide real-time battlefield intelligence to Ukraine, the sources said.
National Security Council spokeswomanAdrienne Watson has rejected the report, insisting that American battlefield intelligence wasn’t provided to the Ukrainian forces “with the intent to kill Russian generals.”

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby acknowledged that the US supplied “Ukraine with information and intelligence that they can use to defend themselves,” but refused to disclose any details of that data.
The US has been actively supplying Ukraine with weapons and funds amid its conflict with Russia, withKirby revealing last week that $4.3 billion has already been allocated to this goal since 2021.

Popular Ukrainian Zelensky critic arrested in Spain
Kiev accuses the exiled opposition figure of "treason"

Prominent blogger and critic of the Ukrainian government, Anatoly Shariy, has been detained by Spanish police as part of an international operation, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) announced on Thursday.
Shariy was arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation by Spanish and Ukrainian cops, as well as international "partners", the SBU said in a statement.
The agency, Kiev's successor to the Soviet KGB, said that the opposition figure is wanted on charges of treason by Kiev, among other things. Shariy has been infringing Ukraine’s national security through his activities in the media realm, while allegedly acting on behalf of “foreign” forces, it insisted. The case against the YouTuber with almost 3 million subscribers was launched in February 2021.
Shariy’s arrest “is more proof that every traitor of Ukraine will sooner or later receive his well-deserved punishment.It is inevitable,” the SBU claimed.
The Ukrainian announcement was confirmed by the Spanish police, who told RIA-Novosti that Shariy was detained in the coastal city of Tarragona on May 4 on an international arrest warrant.
Shariy had been granted political asylum in the EU by Lithuania back in 2012. Back then, he said that he was fleeing persecution by the government of Viktor Yanukovich, whom the Western media branded pro-Russian.
Yanukovich was deposed after the Maidan coup in 2014, but the blogger remained a harsh critic of authorities in Ukraine, be it President Petro Poroshenko or his successor Volodymyr Zelensky.
He condemned Russia’s military operation in Ukraine after it was launched in late February but kept pointing out what he saw as flaws in Kiev’s conduct during the ongoing conflict.
The blogger's political asylum was cancelled by Lithuania in January this year.
Shariy was absent from social media on Wednesday, but on Thursday he took to Telegram to share a photo of his wife feeding parrots in Barcelona, accompanying it with a comment reading: “This really is a comedy.”
According to media reports, the blogger was released from Spanish custody and placed under travel restrictions. He’s to remain in Barcelona where he has a home pending a decision on his extradition to Ukraine.
President Zelensky’s representative at the Constitutional Court has already expressed confidence that Shariy will “face a Ukrainian court and will be held liable in line with Ukrainian laws.”
