PITTSBURGH — Frames of camera footage found by the investigators of the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse provide further information of what happened as the structure collapsed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been investigating the collapse that took place on Jan. 28 by gathering various documents, analyzing video footage, testing steel samples and examining structural components of the bridge. The bridge connected Forbes Ave. to the north side of Frick Park.
The bridge collapse left four people injured.
Their most recent discovery came from video footage recorded by cameras attached to the Port Authority bus that came down in the collapse.
Investigators say that the front-facing camera on the bus shows the bridge-deck separating at the east expansion point.

Footage taken from the rear-facing curbside camera show the west end of the bridge falling off the west abutment.

The rest of the investigation will include chemical testing on material samples which were taken from each bridge leg and several girder sections. Investigators will also examine plate dimensions and weld quality.
The investigation will continue until the NTSB is able to provide a probable cause for the collapse and issue safety recommendations to avoid similar events.
Reconstruction of the Fern Hollow Bridge began last month.
Local residents will be able to voice their concerns about the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse during a meeting tonight, The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Meeting leaders want to talk about the future of the area and receive feedback on the current design to bring back a bridge.
