Monkeypox case confirmed in England
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) can confirm an individual has been diagnosed with monkeypox in England.
The patient has a recent travel history from Nigeria, which is where they are believed to have contracted the infection, before travelling to the UK.
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that does not spread easily between people. It is usually a mild self-limiting illness and most people recover within a few weeks. However, severe illness can occur in some individuals.
The infection can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person; however, there is a very low risk of transmission to the general population.
The patient is receiving care at the expert infectious disease unit at the Guyâs and St Thomasâ NHS Foundation Trust, London.
As a precautionary measure, UKHSA experts are working closely with NHS colleagues and will be contacting people who might have been in close contact with the individual to provide information and health advice.
This includes contacting a number of passengers who travelled in close proximity to the patient on the same flight to the UK. People without symptoms are not considered infectious but, as a precaution, those who have been in close proximity are being contacted to ensure that if they do become unwell they can be treated quickly. If passengers are not contacted then there is no action they should take.
Dr Colin Brown, Director of Clinical and Emerging Infections, UKHSA, said:
It is important to emphasise that monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low.
We are working with NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) to contact the individuals who have had close contact with the case prior to confirmation of their infection, to assess them as necessary and provide advice.
UKHSA and the NHS have well established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious disease and these will be strictly followed.
Dr Nicholas Price, Director NHSE High Consequence Infection Diseases (airborne) Network and Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Guyâs and St Thomasâ, said:
The patient is being treated in our specialist isolation unit at St Thomasâ Hospital by expert clinical staff with strict infection prevention procedures. This is a good example of the way that the High Consequence Infectious Diseases national network and UKHSA work closely together in responding swiftly and effectively to these sporadic cases.
Initial symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion. A rash can develop, often beginning on the face, then spreading to other parts of the body. The rash changes and goes through different stages before finally forming a scab, which later falls off.

'Menstrual Dignity Act' requires menstrual products in boys bathrooms
Conservatives are seeing red over a new Oregon law that requires menstrual products to also be offered inside boysâ bathrooms in the stateâs public schools.
In July 2021, Democratic Gov. Kate Brown signed the controversial âMenstrual Dignity Act,â which requires all K-12 schools to provide free sanitary products to students â along with instructions on their use, Fox News reported.
âStarting next year (2022-2023), products will be available in all restrooms (male, female and all-gender) in every PPS building where education occurs,â the Portland school district said in a 2021 statement.
âTo ensure timely compliance, PPS ordered 500 dispensers. Dispensers have been installed in all elementary and middle school girlsâ restrooms, and more will be installed in all remaining bathrooms, including boysâ restrooms, next year,â it said, according to Fox News.
âInstructions on how to use tampons and pads will be posted in all bathrooms,â the statement added.
The Beaver Stateâs district also encouraged parents to talk to their kids about reducing the âshame and stigmaâ surrounding getting their periods, according to the network.
In March, the state Education Department also issued a âMenstrual Dignity for Studentsâ tool kit containing instructions on how to use menstrual products and tips for âmenstruation-positiveâ language for families.
âImportantly, [the Menstrual Dignity Act] affirms the right to menstrual dignity for transgender, intersex, nonbinary, and two spirit students by addressing the challenges that some students have managing menstruation while minimizing negative attention that could put them at risk of harm and navigating experiences of gender dysphoria during menstruation,â part of the kitâs introduction read, Fox News reported.
âResearch also connects gender-affirming bathroom access to supporting student safety at school,â it added.
Meanwhile, a video posted by the Libs of TikTok apparently shows a tampon dispenser inside a boysâ bathroom.
The new law has incurred the wrath of Republicans, including Oregon gubernatorial candidate and conservative writer Bridget Barton, who slammed Brown.

âRadical leftist woke policies are destroying Oregon from our streets to our businesses to our schools,â Barton told Fox News Digital in a statement.
âBut as a mom, a new grandmother, and a Republican candidate for Oregon governor, I canât believe weâre even discussing this â Americaâs most unpopular governor, Kate Brown, is putting free tampons in the boysâ bathrooms of Oregonâs elementary schools,â she said.
âClearly Brown cares more about whatâs going on in the bathrooms than whatâs going on in the classrooms,â Barton added.
Conservatives also ripped the âMenstrual Dignity Actâ as an attempt by the left to push an LGBTQ agenda, Newsweek reported.
âI and many Oregonian women find your Menstrual Dignity Act an affront to women,â one Twitter user wrote. âOnly females can menstruate. Only females should be in the female restroom, and only males should be in the male restroom.â
A third said âthe âMenstrual Dignity Actâ is another example of liberal maniacs forcing the population to accept their mentally ill beliefs. They want parents to encourage children to become different.â
Some argue that the law subjects girls to bullying and shaming for using the products.
A 2021 survey commissioned by Thinx & PERIOD found that 80 percent of teens already feel there is a negative association with menstruation, Newsweek reported.
