US takes heat from neighbor over Ukraine

Mexican president points to how quickly Washington approved billions for Kiev while stalling aid for Central American neighbors

Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has roasted the US for its reluctance to aid development in Central America, while swiftly finding billions of dollars to assist Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

“The US has already approved $30 billion for the war in Ukraine, while we have been waiting since President Donald Trump, asking they donate $4 billion, and as of today, nothing, absolutely nothing,” López Obrador pointed out on Friday.

“Honestly, it seems inexplicable,” the President said, describing the decision being made by the American authorities. López Obrador, who was speaking in Guatemala, the first stop on his five-day tour of Central America, promised that he was “going to continue to respectfully insist on the need for the US to collaborate.”

Pentagon press-secretary John Kirby announced last week that Washington has already spent $4.3 billion on supporting the Ukrainian military since 2021.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden urged another $33 billion for Kiev in late April, asking the Congress to approve the spending as quickly as possible.

According to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Washington's goal in Ukraine was to see “Russia weakened to the degree that it can't do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine.”

López Obrador has taken a rather balanced stance regarding the Russian offensive in Ukraine. He said he didn't support Moscow's actions as Mexico had itself “suffered from invasions,” referring to past incursions by the US, France and Spain into the country.

However, he has refused to join the draconian international sanctions imposed on Russia over the conflict. Earlier this week, he again reiterated that Mexico wanted to "remain neutral."

NATO chief outlines security pledges for Sweden

Bloc ready to deploy additional forces to the Baltic Sea as soon as Stockholm formally requests to join

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said the US-led bloc will carry out new troop deployments near Russia’s borders if Sweden requests to join – even before it’s officially accepted into the organisation.

Speaking to Swedish state TV about Stockholm’s prospective membership application on Thursday, Stoltenberg said NATO could immediately leap into action to bolster the country’s defenses during the process, which could take up to a year to conclude.

“From the potential moment Sweden is applying, and NATO says that they want Sweden to join, there is a very strong obligation from NATO to be able to guarantee Sweden's security,” he said. “We have different ways of doing it, including through an increased presence of NATO forces in the area around Sweden and the Baltic Sea.”

The comments follow weeks of public discussion centered on Stockholm’s potential NATO application, as well as that of its neighbor Finland. Though both have remained neutral throughout the military bloc’s existence, officials have argued that Moscow’s attack on Ukraine in late February has significantly altered their thinking on regional security.

Washington – NATO’s chief military power which effectively leads the bloc – has spoken positively about membership for both Nordic states, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki echoing Stoltenberg’s remarks during a Thursday briefing.

“We are confident that we could find ways to address any concerns either country may have about the period of time between a NATO membership application and the formal accession to the alliance,” she said, suggesting the United States could offer some form of security guarantee ahead of their formal acceptance into the bloc.

Both nations are reportedly set to decide on whether to file applications sometime this month, and while lawmakers in Stockholm and Helsinki have already largely approved the idea, members of Sweden’s ruling Social Democratic Party have recently raised objections.

“We in the federal board have decided to remain in line with our congressional decisions that =•Sweden should be militarily non-aligned and stand outside NATO==,” said Annika Strandhall, the country’s climate and environment minister and a prominent member of its women’s faction.

Stoltenberg has previously stated Sweden and Finland would be “warmly welcomed” into NATO, and that their membership could even be fast-tracked, indicating strong support for expanding the alliance to 32 members.

Moscow has vocally opposed those moves, having long rejected any further eastward expansion of the alliance (Finland’s ascension would grow the NATO-Russia border by more than 800 miles). Senior Russian officials have also warned that increased military deployments to the Baltic region – which includes NATO members Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as Sweden and Finland – could even trigger the stationing of Russian nuclear and hypersonic weapons to the area to restore “balance” there.

Media reveals Musk’s plans for Twitter

The world’s richest man reportedly wants to hire 3,600 employees and quintuple revenue

Billionaire Elon Musk wants to quintuple Twitter’s revenue by 2028 and hire 3,600 employees after firing hundreds of them, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing a presentation to investors.

According to the report, Musk expects the number of employees to rise from around 7,500 to 9,225 this year, drop to 8,332 in 2023, and rise again to 11,072 by 2025.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO was said to believe that Twitter’s total number of users will grow from 217 million at the end of last year to nearly 600 million by 2025 and 931 million by 2028. He also reportedly projected that Twitter’s revenue would quintuple to $26.4 billion by 2028.

The paper said the document shows that Musk sees advertising falling from around 90% of Twitter’s revenue in 2020 to 45% in the future. In 2028, ads would bring in $12 billion in revenue and subscriptions nearly $10 billion, the report said.

Musk, whom Forbes magazine lists as the world’s richest man, secured the deal with Twitter’s board to buy the company for $44 billion late last month. He promised to uphold freedom of speech and follow the law, but has yet to unveil a detailed plan for Twitter under his helm. This week, he said that he may make “commercial [and] government users” pay a fee for using the social network.

The news of Musk’s plans to buy Twitter was met with both praise and concern, including among the company’s staff.

A group of 26 NGOs and advocacy organizations penned an open letter arguing that Musk’s takeover would “further toxify our information ecosystem” and be a threat to public safety. After Musk publicly called for the funding of these organizations to be investigated, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that billionaire George Soros and staffers of former US President Barack Obama and former state secretary Hillary Clinton are among the donors of the activists behind the letter.

“Interesting. I wonder if those funding these organizations are fully aware of what the organizations are doing,” Musk tweeted in response to the Daily Mail article.

Berlin clarifies stance on Russian and Ukrainian flags ban

Commemoration of victory over the Nazis should not be linked to the ongoing military action in Ukraine, Berlin authorities say

(These people are twisted into pretzels bu PC talk. Ukrainians are Nazis and were defeated by Russia)

Public displays of Russian and Ukrainian flags will be banned at 15 memorial sites in Berlin, including the iconic Soviet WWII memorial in the Treptower Park, during Victory Day celebrations on May 8 and 9, the city’s interior ministry has said on Friday. The move has sparked controversy after some German media and politicians, as well as the Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin, have deemed the decision “scandalous.”

The idea behind the ban was that “commemoration of Germany’s liberation from National Socialism on May 8 and 9 1945 must be clearly separated from the situation in May 2022,” Berlin’s interior ministry said on Saturday, referring to the ongoing Russian military action in Ukraine.

It is important to “prevent any confrontation” at the memorial sites commemorating both “Russian and Ukrainian” soldiers who died fighting the Nazis, it added, according to the German media. The move was initially announced by the Berlin police and sparked an outcry from politicians and the media.

Germany’s Bild tabloid came out with a story on Saturday claiming that “Berlin bans Ukraine’s flags during the commemoration of the end of the World War II.” The move was also sharply criticized by the Ukrainian envoy to Berlin, Andrey Melnik, who called the decision “scandalous” and urged the mayor of Berlin, Franziska Giffey, to roll it back.

The outspoken diplomat, who is himself no stranger to controversy, has denounced the decision as “a slap in the face” of Ukraine and its people. Melnik immediately received support from some German political circles. Kai Wegner, the head of former chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party office in Berlin, also called on Giffey to reverse her “painfully wrong” decision and argued that “the Ukrainian flag stands for the fight for freedom.”

(kekkity, if thats true I dont want their kind of freedom. What a fucking psyop to remake Ukraine as respectable)

A local MP, Tobias Bauschke, also stated that the “colors of Ukraine are colors of freedom” and accused the Berlin authorities of betraying “all our values” by banning the Ukrainian flag. No German officials or media outlets publicly opposed the idea of banning Russian flag.

Following the outcry, the Berlin police clarified the rules related to the Victory Day celebrations, saying that public displays of the Ukrainian flag are “generally permitted” in the city on May 8 and 9. Its display will still only be restricted at the specific memorial sites.

The restrictions will not be applied to diplomats and “other privileged persons, including guests invited to commemoration [ceremonies organized] by embassies” the police have said, adding that “these groups of people” would be able to carry the Ukrainian flags at any memorial sites.

According to the media, Berlin authorities have also placed additional restrictions on what they described as “pro-Russian events” scheduled to be held in the city on May 8 and 9. No “public approval” of what Berlin calls “a war of aggression against Ukraine” would be permitted anywhere in the city, they’ve said.

No stylized military uniforms or even “parts of the uniform” would be allowed at the memorial sites, the police have said, banning any “marching or military songs” there as well. The ‘Z’ symbol associated in Russia with the support for the military action in Ukraine would be prohibited as well, law enforcement officials have added.

The development comes as the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst, dedicated to German-Soviet relations and sponsored jointly by Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, decided to drop the reference to Russia in its name.

The decision was taken in protest against Russia’s actions in Ukraine, its director, Jorg Morre, told the German media earlier this week. The museum is housed in the building where Hitler’s forces signed Germany’s unconditional surrender on the night of May 8-9, 1945, ending the war in Europe.

Doctor reveals why pig heart transplant recipient died

Transplanted heart infected with pig virus likely killed recipient of pioneering treatment

An American man who died two months after receiving a genetically modified pig heart transplant likely succumbed to a pig virus the transplanted heart was infected with, his doctor revealed on Wednesday.

End-stage heart disease patient David Bennett Sr. died in March, two months after undergoing the interspecies transplant surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

While he had initially appeared to respond well to the procedure, the first of its kind, his recovery did not last, and a spokesperson for the hospital where he died initially said there was “no obvious cause” for his passing.

However, Dr. Bartley Griffith, who performed the transplant on Bennett, now believes his death was caused by porcine cytomegalovirus - a preventable infection that is not believed to be able to infect humans. While the pig, supplied by biotech firm Revivicor, was supposed to be free of all pathogens, Griffith told the MIT Technology Review that doctors noticed a “blip” suggesting the presence of the virus 20 days after the procedure, and the team believes the donor pig was infected.

While the doctors initially ignored the readings, claiming the level of cytomegalovirus was very low and attributing it to an error, Griffith noted that by the 43rd day after surgery his patient “looked really funky” and had clearly fallen off the pathway to recovery. “Something happened to him. He looked infected. He lost his attention and wouldn't talk to us.”

It's not certain that Bennett died exclusively because of the cytomegalovirus infection - he was suffering from end-stage heart disease, after all, and treating an infection without triggering the patient's immune system to reject the pig heart entirely required striking a careful balance. The doctors believe they might have hastened his death by giving him human antibodies, blood products that might have damaged the pig organ.

While some doctors worry that xenotransplantation - surgically implanting an organ from one species into another - could set off a new type of pandemic, there was no evidence that the virus that attacked Bennett's heart had spread to any of his human body parts, and Massachusetts General Hospital transplant specialist Jay Fishman said there was “no real risk to humans” of the virus spreading beyond the donor organ.

However, given that the pig's own immune system was absent and the human recipient was taking immunosuppressive drugs to prevent him from rejecting the transplant, such non-human viruses could be permitted to rage unchecked, destroying the organ in its new host body - or potentially causing other complications.

Aside from the viral infection, the operation was considered to be a success, according to multiple doctors who spoke to MIT Technology Review - the heart recipient did not reject the transplanted organ, which was the critical part of the experiment. “It was quite amazing. You go to talk to this gentleman and he's got a pig heart. Literally, he has a pig heart,” Griffith, the surgeon who performed the operation, gushed - even while acknowledging that the surgery team was “like a blind group of squirrels” scurrying around in the dark to manage a condition they didn't fully understand.

The donor pig received 10 gene modifications in total, including the removal of genes that could cause hyper-fast organ rejection. It was also given human genes to facilitate acceptance by the patient's body. Several other biotech firms are likely to advance their own pig-to-human transplants in the coming months.

(Serious question, would anons allow a pig heart to be transplanted in your body? Sounds ulterly evil to me; and you probably wouldnt want bacon again)
