AUkrainian bomb-sniffing dog and his owner were awarded a service medal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday during a ceremony in Kyiv alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Jack Russell terrier, named "Patron," has been credited with sniffing out more than 200 explosive devices since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Patron has become a symbol of Ukrainian patriotism, and his mine hunting has been chronicled by media worldwide since the start of the war. Patron struggled to maintain his composure during the ceremony and barked at the Canadian prime minister as he was awarded his medal.

"In the presence of Mr. Prime Minister [Trudeau], I awarded our sappers today. In particular, a small but very famous sapper — Patron. A dog who helps clean our land from the traces of the occupiers. And who also helps teach children mine safety," Zelensky said in his nightly address Sunday.

Patron barked and wagged his tail as the Ukrainian president awarded his owner, Maj. Myhailo Iliev, the medal. Trudeau appeared to search his pockets for a dog treat as Patron barked in his direction during the ceremony.

“Even if the dog barked at me, we’re helping fund that,” Trudeau said during the ceremony, referencing the $50 million in military aid from Canada, including money for demining operations, that he announced during his visit.

Zelensky said on Sunday that Russian forces have left behind thousands of mines, tripwire mines, and undetonated shells since their Feb. 24 invasion, and clearing them as well teaching the public how to recognize landmines is essential.

"Due to the Russian invaders, this is now one of the most urgent tasks — to teach children to recognize and avoid explosive objects. This is the 'liberation' from a safe life for Ukrainian children that Russia has brought to Ukraine," Zelensky said.

Landmines left behind by Russian troops have delayed humanitarian aid convoys and have killed civilians in Ukraine.

In Bucha alone, where hundreds of civilians were found dead after Russian troops withdrew from the town, thousands of mines and unexploded ordnances have been cleared by Ukrainian authorities.

Russian forces have reportedly deployed an advanced type of landmine in Ukraine that can detonate as a person is walking up to it, sending shrapnel up to 50 feet away, making clearing them a challenge.

The latest casualty numbers by the U.N. put the number of civilians killed in Ukraine since Russia's Feb. 24 invasion at 3,309, with at least 3,493 injured.

Lost puppy taken in by US family turns out to be coyote

Maya Yang - 2h ago

A Massachusetts family was in for a surprise when it wanted to give a stray puppy a dog’s chance and brought it home.

The family rescued the dog after finding it worse for wear on the side of the road.

But when experts were consulted they quickly concluded it was a coyote, according to the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable.

The eastern coyote pup appeared to have become separated from its animal family at much too young an age to be able to flourish independently.

It and was found “wandering and distressed by the side of a busy road,” the center said.

“He was then accidentally taken home by a local family after they mistakenly identified him as a lost puppy. After realizing their mix-up they called us for assistance.

“With the help of the Mass department of public health we were able to determine there was no potential exposure risk to rabies, and were able to clear him for care, and granted permission to rehab by Mass Wildlife,” the center added.

The coyote pup has been recovering in the center’s isolation ward. A foster sibling from the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island has arrived at the Barnstable center and will be introduced to the pup soon.

The cape center plans to raise the two pups together in its outdoor caging once they have been vaccinated.

“They will be raised together and will be given a chance [to] grow and learn natural behaviors,” the center said, adding: “We work hard to give them as much of a natural upbringing as possible.”

Although the coyote pup was saved, the center warned that the case could have easily gone awry, as coyotes are considered a rabies vector species in Massachusetts, or common carriers, also including raccoons, skunks, bats and woodchucks.

“We are grateful to every single person who takes time out of their day to help wildlife when they are in need, but we always encourage people to call the appropriate resources prior to intervening,” the center said.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/dog-left-heartbroken-in-video-after-discovering-his-sea-lion-friend-died/ar-AAX4iaD?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=8df557745908413bdd6169cf5f8990d3

Heartbreaking footage of a dog discovering that a sea lion he previously befriended had sadly passed away has been shared on social media.

Lindsay Greenberg, from Malibu, California, shared the gut-wrenching video to TikTok, where it has already accumulated 5.2 million views. It chronicled the unique bond her chocolate Labrador, Slim, managed to strike up with a sea lion who regularly visited the beach located close to where they live.

Dogs are social animals by their very nature and crave interaction, whether it is human or otherwise. According to psychologist Dr. Stanley Coren, much of this can be traced back to the way dogs are bred as pets. "They aren't glommed onto any one species—because we want them to be glommed onto us," he explained to The Dog People. "So they are much more accepting of other animals."

Dr. Coren notes that while dogs would always prefer to socialize with fellow canines, they are socially flexible if no other four-legged friends are available. "Dogs feel very uncomfortable when they're isolated," he said. "So they would much prefer to be with other dogs, but they'll settle. It's a companionship kind of a thing."

As with any friendship, bonding with a fellow animal can also offer a dog a form of support mechanism. "A two or three-year-old child will have a plush toy—a teddy bear, a stuffed bunny, etc.—they will not be without.," Dr. Coren explained . "I think that's the way the bonding occurs…the other animal becomes their support object as their personal plush toy."

All of which only adds to the devastation likely felt by Slim. As Greenberg's video highlights, Slim was initially standoffish around his new sea lion acquaintance, barking in the direction of the friendly pinniped. But over time he warmed to his new beach-based companion. It can be watched here.

His sense of loss is palpable with Slim appearing confused as to why his sea lion buddy is no longer walking over to say hello, like they always used to. The video ends with Slim looking out to sea as the waves crash over the lifeless body of his old friend. "R.I.P. to our sea lion friend and all his visits," an onscreen caption reads.

Greenberg's video struck a chord with many on TikTok. "This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen," amanrobinson_ wrote. "That hurt my heart. to see him just rolling in the water," Jennifer Petersen commented with Zeni_dzh adding: "so sad breaks my heart."

Others, meanwhile, were quick to note a devastating detail previously missed by Slim's owner. Bonsaibritt told Greenberg that Slim's "seal friend was probably on his way to go meet you dog" when they died and that realization has her "sobbing."

Greenberg, evidently realizing this was true, replied: "OMG this just killed me." Cannonfarmsaynor agreed, writing: "This is so sad, its like he was coming to say goodbye and didn't make it."

However, others like SoundWaveTraveler felt this made the video all the more powerful. "It makes me happy to know he came to visit one more time knowing his time was up," they said. "He just had to let you know. You don't have to wonder."

RenegadeCOD also saw the beauty in Slim's special friendship. "Don't be sad your dog made that seal the happiest seal in the world," they wrote. "He just wanted to be a pup and your Doggo made him feel like he was one."

More than a thousand vote-counting machines (VCMs) have encountered "common issues" at the start of election day, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said.

In a COMELEC update on Monday (May 9) at 10:27 am, Commissioner George Garcia said 940 machines were jammed, 606 VCMs rejected ballots, 158 had problems with the scanners, 87 of the machines were not printing, and 76 VCMs had malfunctioning printers.

Of around 1900 problematic machines, only 10 have been reportedly replaced. Technicians on-site were deployed to attend to the problems of the machines, Garcia said.

As of 11 am, a total of 51 VCMs were defective and 102 SD cards have been replaced, according to the poll body.

Some voters have expressed frustration on social media because the machines in their respective precincts were not working.

PLEASE DO NOT LET ANYONE TOUCH YOUR BALLOT ‼️ #Halalan2022

There are reports about VCM not working in some precints nationwide. If poll workers ask you to leave your ballot and say they will insert it later, refuse them quickly. Check your receipts also.

The voting period began at 6 am and voters will run until 7 pm. However, people who are still in line past 7 pm will still be allowed to vote.

If the machine at the voters’ precincts is malfunctioning, voters can either wait for the technicians to finish troubleshooting the machines or they can leave their ballots with the electoral board, who will then conduct a batch feeding of the ballots once the machines start working again.

"You can vote and watchers can watch your pile of voted ballots until they are fed to a VCM. Don't worry. Just vote," former COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said.

The protocol for VCMs that fail to start : @COMELEC will send a tech or replace the VCM. You can vote and watchers can watch your pile of voted ballots until they are fed to a VCM .dont worry. Just vote.

— Rowena Guanzon (@rowena_guanzon) May 9, 2022

However, some have expressed concern about leaving their ballots to officers as it may cause electoral fraud.

A netizen from Cainta, Rizal said that the machine in their precinct was not working and an officer offered to feed their ballots to the machine later. However, people refused and waited for almost an hour for the VCM to work again.

PEOPLE REFUSED.

They want to see their ballots fed to the machine and check the receipts.

“Ok lang magtagal basta maipasa ng maayos yung balota”

Lo and behold, after 45 mins of no one leaving, the machine worked

— Kristine (@kadgonzaga) May 9, 2022

Commissioner Garcia has explained that they have ‘no choice’ but to maintain the 10 persons per precinct limit and the voters who are already done shading their ballots should leave the polling place even if their ballots were not yet fed into the VCMs.

Meanwhile, the Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) said that it is up to the voters to wait for the machine to function, or leave it to the Electoral Board.

Furthermore, election watchdog Kontra Daya said that the election officer’s statement was unacceptable, citing voters’ right to check if their votes were counted.

"Garcia's statement that voters have no choice but to leave their ballots in cases of VCM breakdown is unacceptable," Kontra Daya said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Adog has won plaudits online after it proved that family is more than who you are related to after it stepped in to help raise a lamb that was rejected by its mother.

A TikTok video uploaded on May 5 by Olivia Akers shows the endearing bond between dog Max and rejected lamb, Beau.

The clip, which has been viewed more than 9.9 million times, starts with heartbreak as young Beau can be seen being pushed away by her mother multiple times. It then shows Max meeting and licking the young farm animal through a gate.

Olivia says: "It was love at first sight."

She then cuts to Beau and Max sleeping next to one another on the carpet, with a caption that says the pooch cleaned, played with and protected the lamb.

The duo can then be seen running around a house and outdoors together. Another caption emphasizes their bond, adding: "They were inseparable."

As the clip progresses, it becomes clear that Beau had adopted a lot of dog-like traits, which included scratching the back of her ear as Max does.

Beau later returned to the flock when she grew older, but the video reassures viewers that she and Max see one another daily.

Olivia adds that the duo "will get to love and play with each other for the rest of their lives."

The clip has been shared more than 2 million times and has received 15,300 comments.

Unsurprisingly, many of those who commented on the clip swelled with joy when they saw the pair's close relationship.

One TikTok user said: "Not a stepfather, but a father who stepped in."

Another added: "This story would make a wonderful children's book. So sweet."

A third commented: "This is absolutely the cutest effin thing ever. My heart, omg (oh my God). Thank you so much for sharing this."

Other TikTok users shared their frustration that Beau's mother had rejected him, with many commenting that they had been left in tears.

A commenter posted: "Omg, she still had her cord attached when mom was pushing her away. I'm sobbing."

Newsweek has contacted Olivia for comment.

It is not surprising that dog videos rack up millions of views on social media, considering they are the most popular pet in the U.S.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there were 48,255,413 homes with dogs in 2018.

Ajournalist who covered the 2020 Antifa and Proud Boy violence in Portland was arrested and charged with vandalizing synagogues and trying to set fire to a mosque.

34-year-old Michael Bivins was arrested on Saturday after he approached a TV station in Beaverton, just outside Portland, “where he demanded to speak to a reporter,” Portland police said. The station, KPTV, reported that Bivins confessed to reporters, who then called the police.

A station employee also told Oregon Public Broadcasting that Bivins was making anti-Semitic remarks.

Bivins was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal mischief, and first-degree arson.

The vandalism occurred at three synagogues and the arson at the mosque. Bivins allegedly broke a window at a synagogue, Congregation Shir Tikvah in northeast Portland, on April 30 and, on May 2 and May 4, respectively, put graffiti and threw a rock through a window, at another synagogue, Congregation Beth Israel, in northwest Portland. He allegedly set fire to the mosque, the Muslim Community Center of Portland, on May 3.

“Additional investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible,” said Portland police, which noted it is “in contact with federal authorities regarding these cases.”

Bivins, a freelance journalist, has written for Al Jazeera, Willamette Week, The Eugene Weekly and other publications, and been cited in The Washington Post.

He covered an alt-right rally in Portland for Al Jazeera, and clashes between Proud Boys and Antifa for the Willamette Week, a Portland alt-weekly.

Aaron Mesh, news editor of the Willamette Week, said the paper is “conducting a review of his work.”

Mike Bivins wrote for @wweek from 2017 to 2019. He covered street brawls and other political polarization for us (along with selling video to local and national outlets). We’re conducting a review of his work.
