Human Trafficking: Over 831 victims rescued, 31 prosecutions, 13 convictions in 2021- HTS head reveals

Over the past few years, Ghana has been known to be a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking.

Out of a population of 28 million;133 000 people are estimated to be living in modern slavery in Ghana.

Though, the government of Ghana in recent years has put in place measures to mitigate human trafficking in the country.

It is in this vein that the Human Trafficking Secretariat (HTS) seeks Expertise France support to conduct a 3-day training for some law enforcement officers and social workers in the Oti and Volta Regions following the monitoring visits.

This project, funded by the European Union through the European Union Emergency Trust Fund and France, is built around four components (namely the institutional and operational consolidation of interdepartmental bodies fighting against human trafficking, law enforcement, protection of victims, and regional cooperation), and aims to support the effective implementation of the NPA.

The general purpose of this training is to enhance the basic skills of law enforcement agencies and social workers with regard to the identification and management of human trafficking cases. It would also allow the HTS to further educate the targeted participants on the relevant laws relating to human trafficking.

Ms. Abena Annobea Asare, head of the human trafficking Secretariat at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) indicated that over 831 victims were rescued 31 prosecutions and 13 convictions were gained in 2021.

Speaking on behalf of Director MOGCSP, Dr. Asizah Zakariah, she said, the training is very important to equip men in uniform and on the ground in the fight against human trafficking in the country.

According to Ms. Abena Annobea Asare, traffickers have developed a new way of deceiving people into trafficking especially young girls; adding that human trafficking is the largest trade globally in the black market hence the training.

"In all 300 officers have been trained to set up desks and units to fight against human trafficking. We want to build strong units therefore that the other units that are not strong enough in the fight against trafficking will be strengthened and work with strong units to fight against trafficking in the country".

She commended the Volta region anti-human trafficking unit and Attorney General's office for tremendous work done in combating human trafficking in the region.

US-Israeli cyber firm uncovers ‘massive’ Chinese-backed industrial espionage ring

Cybereason says group is ‘one of the most prolific and industrious’ in cyber threat landscape, targeted dozens of tech and manufacturing companies on 3 continents

An Israeli-American cybersecurity firm said Monday that it uncovered a “massive” hacking operation, apparently led by a hacking group believed to be backed by China, that had engaged in intellectual property (IP) theft and industrial espionage on three continents.

Cybereason, which is headquartered in Boston with offices in Tel Aviv, London, and Tokyo, said the group employed sophisticated methods and worked in an elusive manner to target technology and manufacturing companies in the US, Europe, and Asia and steal sensitive proprietary information.

Assaf Dahan, senior director and head of threat research at Cybereason, told The Times of Israel that the ring, known as the Winnti Group (and also tracked as APT41, Blackfly and Barium in cybersecurity circles) was “one of the most prolific and industrious groups in the cyber threat landscape,” and is known to operate on behalf of Chinese state interests.

The group has been active since at least 2010. Some known members of the group were indicted in 2020 by the US Department of Justice for computer crimes against some 100 companies in the US and other countries, including software development companies, computer hardware manufacturers, telecommunications providers, and gaming firms.

Dahan said Cybereason’s research showed that the Winnti Group engaged in “intellectual property theft and cyber espionage on a grand scale” since at least 2019, and possibly before. Cybereason began its research into the group’s industrial espionage operations last year, having been alerted by one of the targeted companies that something “funky” was afoot in its network, said Dahan, who is based in London.

He explained that Cybereason researchers were able to observe the group’s efforts to obtain sensitive data such as patent and product details, source codes, tech blueprints, and manufacturing instructions in real-time.

Why Won’t Anyone Talk About The One Neo-Nazi Battalion In Ukraine?

What appeared to be a man in a green shirt marked “AZOV” laid on the ground on a stretcher, some of his fingers blackened, covered in blood and dislocated from his right hand.

The video, posted on the Azov Regiment’s Telegram channel, claimed the man was an Azov soldier that had been injured evacuating civilians from Russian attack.

The regiment has been quietly under fire for years from the U.S. government for having alleged neo-Nazi ties. The House voted in 2018 to ban funding of “arms, training, or other assistance” to the Azov Regiment. Forty House Democrats requested in 2019 for the Azov Regiment to be designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the State Department, but were not successful in doing so. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his justification for waging war in Ukraine on Feb. 24, seemingly pointed to the group when he said one of Russia’s goals was to “denazify” Ukraine.

Asking questions about the regiment’s insignia, rhetoric and activities, and how they tie into “neo-Nazi” allegations, is seemingly taboo and unspeakable at all costs.

“What is there to stop if there are no neo-Nazi behaviors,” Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, told the Daily Caller on Thursday in an interview, calling the allegations “Russian propaganda.” Markarova said Ukraine has tried to tell Congress “information about Azov” and has “invited people to come and see how they train.”

“They were defending our country…,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview, adding that when they were established in 2014, they did violate “laws of Ukraine” and some got prison sentences. Now they are part of the Ukrainian military, and are “no longer a self-established group,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with Bret Baier.

The Daily Caller contacted experts at the Wilson Center, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, American Enterprise Institute, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the Renew Democracy Initiative, the International Centre for Policy Studies, the Atlantic Council, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Anti-Defamation League, Brookings, Chatham House, the American Foreign Policy Council, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the White House, the Pentagon and finally the State Department.

No one was willing to give an on-the-record response about the regiment.

Reports indicate that the regiment’s insignia, members and recruitment strategies appear to blatantly promote neo-Nazi ideology. However, Putin’s stress on Ukraine’s ties with neo-Nazism vastly overstates the degree to which it is prevalent in Ukraine’s society and armed forces, and doesn’t account for the similar movements taking place in Russia.

Ron Johnson opens probe into CDC tracking Americans through phone data

Johnson said the tracking "really raises some very serious constitutional issues."

Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson is investigating the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for tracking millions of Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CDC paid one company $420,000 to access location data for at least 20 million cell phones a day, a Vice Motherboard investigation revealed last week. While the CDC claimed it needed access to the data to fight COVID, documents show the data was used "to support non-COVID-19 programmatic areas and public health priorities."

Johnson criticized the CDC's phone tracking efforts Monday on "Just the News – Not Noise."

"Just because data exists, doesn't mean that the government should be using it to track Americans, I would think that that really raises some very serious constitutional issues," Johnson noted.

In a letter to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky on Thursday, Johnson wrote, "It remains unclear why the CDC tracked millions of Americans during the pandemic and whether it continues to do so. In response to COVID-19, the CDC should have been prioritizing the development of treatments, effective testing, and vaccine safety rather than tracking Americans’ daily lives."

He demanded answers from the CDC on the purchase and use of location data, including whether the agency used other mechanisms to monitor Americans throughout the pandemic.

Johnson told editor-in-chief John Solomon, "I think the government is becoming way too big, and way too powerful."

The Wisconsin Republican serves as ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He said he sent out dozens of oversight letters to federal agencies to ask about their COVID response, but has gotten "very few answers."

Since serving as Homeland Security Committee chair, "congressional oversight has been dramatically weakened, mainly because we have no enforcement mechanism," Johnson said.
